The energy landscape of multiply connected superconducting structures is ruled by fluxoid quantization due to the implied single-valuedness of the complex wave function. The transitions and interaction between these energy states, each defined by a specific phase winding number, are governed by classical and/or quantum phase slips. Understanding these events requires the ability to probe, non-invasively, the state of the ring. Here, we employ a niobium resonator to examine the superconducting properties of an aluminum loop. By applying a magnetic field, adjusting temperature, and altering the loop's dimensions via focused ion beam milling, we correlate resonance frequency shifts with changes in the loop's kinetic inductance. This parameter is a unique indicator of the superconducting condensate's state, facilitating the detection of phase slips in nanodevices and providing insights into their dynamics. Our method presents a proof-of-principle spectroscopic technique with promising potential for investigating the Cooper pair density in inductively coupled superconducting nanostructures.

Macroscopic superconducting components are an important building block of various quantum circuits. Since several of the envisioned applications require exposure to magnetic fields, it is of utmost importance to explore the impact of magnetic fields on their performance. Here we explore the complex pattern of magnetic field penetration and identify its impact on the resonance frequency of NbTiN superconducting resonators by combining magneto-optical imaging and high-frequency measurements. At temperatures below approximately half of the superconducting critical temperature, the development of magnetic flux avalanches manifests itself as a noisy response in the field-dependent resonance frequency. Magneto-optical imaging reveals different regimes and distinguishes the impact of avalanches in the ground plane and resonator. Our findings demonstrate that superconducting resonators represent a valuable tool to investigate magnetic flux dynamics. Moreover, the current blooming of niobium-based superconducting radio-frequency devices makes this report timely by unveiling the severe implications of magnetic flux dynamics.

Understanding the mechanisms of magnetoelectric (ME) coupling within multiferroic structures is paramount from a fundamental as well as an applied point of view. We report here that the magnetoelectric properties, as well as the magnetization, of BaTiO$_3$-BiFeO$_3$ superlattices can be tuned by varying the BiFeO$_3$ layer thickness. The magnetoelectric voltage coefficient ($α_{ME}$) reaches its maximum of 60.2 Vcm$^{-1}$Oe$^{-1}$ at 300 K, one of the highest values reported so far, for a sample with a BiFeO$_3$ thickness of 5 nm and a BaTiO$_3$ thickness of 10 nm. To gain deeper insight into the increased magnetoelectric coupling, and both the local and macroscopic magnetic properties, samples with varying BiFeO$_3$ thicknesses have been investigated. Correlations were established between the hyperfine field (HFF), the magnetoelectric voltage coefficient and the magnetization. The possible mechanisms responsible for the strong magnetoelectric coupling are discussed.

With the development of novel computing schemes working at cryogenic temperatures, superconducting memory elements have become essential. In this context, superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) are promising candidates, as they may trap different discrete amounts of magnetic flux. We demonstrate that a field-assisted writing scheme allows such a device to operate as a multilevel memory by the readout of eight distinct vorticity states at zero magnetic field. We present an alternative mechanism based on single phase slips which allows to switch the vorticity state while preserving superconductivity. This mechanism provides a possibly deterministic channel for flux control in SQUID-based memories, under the condition that the field-dependent energy of different vorticity states are nearby.

We fabricated an asymmetric nanoscale SQUID consisting of one nanobridge weak link and one Dayem bridge weak link. The current phase relation of these particular weak links is characterized by multivaluedness and linearity. While the latter is responsible for a particular magnetic field dependence of the critical current (so-called vorticity diamonds), the former enables the possibility of different vorticity states (phase winding numbers) existing at one magnetic field value. In experiments the observed critical current value is stochastic in nature, does not necessarily coincide with the current associated with the lowest energy state and critically depends on the measurement conditions. In this work, we unravel the origin of the observed metastability as a result of the phase dynamics happening during the freezing process and while sweeping the current. Moreover, we employ special measurement protocols to prepare the desired vorticity state and identify the (hidden) phase slip dynamics ruling the detected state of these nanodevices. In order to gain insights into the dynamics of the condensate and, more specifically the hidden phase slips, we performed time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau simulations.

In this work, we study the current phase relation ($CΦR$) of lithographically fabricated molybdenum germanium (MoGe) nanobridges, which is intimately linked to the nanobridge kinetic inductance. We do this by imbedding the nanobridges in a SQUID. We observe that for temperatures far below $T_c$, the $CΦR$ is linear as long as the condensate is not weakened by the presence of supercurrent. We demonstrate lithographic control over the nanobridge kinetic inductance, which scales with the nanobridge aspect ratio. This allows to tune the SQUID $I_c(B)$ characteristic. The SQUID properties that can be controlled in this way include the SQUID sensitivity and the positions of the critical current maxima. These observations can be of use for the design and operation of future superconducting devices such as magnetic memories or flux qubits.

We report experimental evidence of topological Dirac fermion charge carriers in pure and robust $α$-Sn films grown on InSb substrates. This evidence was acquired using standard macroscopic four-point contact resistance measurements, conducted on uncapped films with a significantly reduced bulk mobility. We analyzed and compared electrical characteristics of the constituting components of the $α$-Sn/InSb sample, and propose a three-band drift velocity model accordingly. A surface band, with low carrier density and high mobility, is identified as the origin of the observed Shubnikov -- de Haas oscillations. The analysis of these quantum oscillations results in a non-trivial value of the phase shift $γ=0$, characteristic for topologically protected Dirac fermions. For the same uncapped samples we estimate the momentum relaxation time $τ\approx 300\ \mathrm{fs}$, which is significantly larger in comparison with the previous reports on grown $α$-Sn films.

In-plane compressively strained $α$-Sn films have been theoretically predicted and experimentally proven to possess non-trivial electronic states of a 3D topological Dirac semimetal. The robustness of these states typically strongly depends on purity, homogeneity and stability of the grown material itself. By developing a reliable fabrication process, we were able to grow pure strained $α$-Sn films on InSb(100), without heating of the substrate during growth, nor using any dopants. The $α$-Sn films were grown by molecular beam epitaxy, followed by experimental verification of the achieved chemical purity and structural properties of the film's surface. Local insight into the surface morphology was provided by scanning tunneling microscopy. We detected the existence of compressive strain using Mössbauer spectroscopy and we observed a remarkable robustness of the grown samples against ambient conditions. The topological character of the samples was confirmed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, revealing the Dirac cone of the topological surface state. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy, moreover, allowed obtaining an improved insight into the electronic structure of the 3D topological Dirac semimetal $α$-Sn above the Fermi level.

Accessing fluid infiltration in nanogranular coatings is an outstanding challenge, of relevance for applications ranging from nanomedicine to catalysis. A sensing platform, allowing to quantify the amount of fluid infiltrated in a nanogranular ultrathin coating, with thickness in the 10 to 40 nm range, is here proposed and theoretically investigated by multiscale modelling. The scheme relies on impulsive photoacoustic excitation of hypersonic mechanical breathing modes in engineered gas-phase synthesised nanogranular metallic ultathin films and time-resolved acousto-optical read-out of the breathing modes frequency shift upon liquid infiltration. A superior sensitivity, exceeding 26x103 cm^2/g, is predicted upon equivalent areal mass loading of a few ng/mm^2. The capability of the present scheme to discriminate among different infiltration patterns is discussed. The platform is an ideal tool to investigate nano fluidics in granular materials and naturally serves as a distributed nanogetter coating, integrating fluid sensing capabilities. The proposed scheme is readily extendable to other nanoscale and mesoscale porous materials.

The renormalization factor $Z$=m_cp*/2m (m_cp* and m are the mass of the Cooper pair and the electron, respectively) resulting from the electron-phonon interaction, and the temperature dependent London penetration depth $λ_L(T)$ were determined as well. A general expression linking $ξ_0$, $Z$ and $λ_L(0)$ is introduced and experimentally verified. This expression allows one to determine experimentally the Pippard coherence length in \textit{any} superconductor, independent of whether the electrodynamics is local or nonlocal, conventional or unconventional.

The influence of a periodic landscape of pinning sites on the vortex dynamics in Pb thin films is explored by ac-susceptibility measurements. For different amplitudes h of the ac-drive, the ac-susceptibility x=x'+ix'' exhibits a complex field dependence associated with different dynamic regimes. At very low ac-drives where both, multiquanta vortices trapped by the antidots and interstitial vortices oscillate inside the pinning potential (intra-valley motion), a small kink in x'(H) together with a very low dissipation is observed. At intermediate ac-excitations such that vortices in the antidots remain pinned whereas interstices are driven out of the pinning well, a more pronounced kink in the screening coinciding with the onset of dissipation (x''(H) ~ 0) indicates the entrance of interstitial vortices. Eventually, at high enough amplitudes all vortices are set in motion and the penetration of interstitial vortices appears as a sudden reduction of the shielding power. We show that these distinctive features allow us to clearly identify the maximum number of flux quanta per hole regardless the vortex dynamic regime.

We have studied the dynamic response of Pb thin films with a square array of antidots by means of ac susceptibility chi(T,H) measurements. At low enough ac drive amplitudes h, vortices moving inside the pinning potential give rise to a frequency- and h-independent response together with a scarce dissipation. For higher amplitudes, the average distance travelled by vortices surpasses the pinning range and a critical state develops. We found that the boundary h*(H,T) between these regimes smoothly decreases as T increases whereas a step-like behavior is observed as a function of field. We demonstrate that these steps in h*(H) arise from sharp changes in the pinning strength corresponding to different vortex configurations. For a wide set of data at several fields and temperatures in the critical state regime, we show that the scaling laws based on the simple Bean model are satisfied.

The magnetic field (H) - temperature (T) phase diagram of a superconductor is significantly altered when domains are present in an underlying ferromagnet with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. When the domains have a band-like shape, the critical temperature Tc of the superconductor in zero field is strongly reduced, and the slope of the upper critical field as a function of T is increased by a factor of 2.4 due to the inhomogeneous stray fields of the domains. Field compensation effects can cause an asymmetric phase boundary with respect to H when the ferromagnet contains bubble domains. For a very inhomogeneous domain structure, Tc~H^2 for low H and Tc~H for higher fields, indicating a dimensional crossover from a one-dimensional network-like to a two-dimensional behavior in the nucleation of superconductivity.

We report on the magnetic properties of elongated submicron magnetic islands and their influence on a superconducting film. The magnetic properties were studied by magnetization hysteresis loop measurements and scanning-force microscopy. In the as-grown state, the islands have a magnetic structure consisting of two antiparallel domains. This stable domain configuration has been directly visualized as a 2x2-checkerboard pattern by magnetic-force microscopy. In the remanent state, after magnetic saturation along the easy axis, all islands have a single-domain structure with the magnetic moment oriented along the magnetizing field direction. Periodic lattices of these Co islands act as efficient artificial pinning arrays for the flux lines in a superconducting Pb film deposited on top of the Co islands. The influence of the magnetic state of the dots on their pinning efficiency is investigated in these films, before and after the Co dots are magnetized.

The pinning of flux lines by two different types of regular arrays of submicron magnetic dots is studied in superconducting Pb films; rectangular Co dots with in-plane magnetization are used as pinning centers to investigate the influence of the magnetic stray field of the dots on the pinning phenomena, whereas multilayered Co/Pt dots with out-of-plane magnetization are used to study the magnetic interaction between the flux lines and the magnetic moment of the dots. For both types of pinning arrays, matching anomalies are observed in the magnetization curves versus perpendicular applied field at integer and rational multiples of the first matching field, which correspond to stable flux configurations in the artificially created pinning potential. By varying the magnetic domain structure of the Co dots with in-plane magnetization, a clear influence of the stray field of the dots on the pinning efficiency is found. For the Co/Pt dots with out-of-plane magnetization, a pronounced field asymmetry is observed in the magnetization curves when the dots are magnetized in a perpendicular field prior to the measurement. This asymmetry can be attributed to the interaction of the out-of-plane magnetic moment of the Co/Pt dots with the local field of the flux lines and indicates that flux pinning is stronger when the magnetic moment of the dot and the field of the flux line have the same polarity.

We have studied flux pinning in thin superconducting Pb films covering a triangular array of submicron magnetic Au/Co/Au dots with in-plane magnetization. The rectangular dots can have two possible in-plane magnetic states: a single-domain state where the magnetization lies along the long axis of the dot and a multi-domain state. In this paper, we report on measurements of the field dependence of the critical current Ic(B) of the superconducting Pb film evaporated on top of this magnetic array. We observe a clear influence of the magnetic state of the dots on the pinning properties of the magnetic array, showing that there is an important pinning contribution due to the stray fields of the magnetic dots.

Shapiro voltage steps at voltages V_n=nV_0 (n integer) have been observed in the voltage-current characteristics of a superconducting film with a square lattice of perforating microholes (antidots)in the presence of radiofrequent radiation. Shapiro voltage steps at voltages V_n=nV_0 (n integer) have been observed in the voltage-current characteristics of a superconducting film with a square lattice of perforating microholes (antidots)in the presence of radiofrequent radiation. These equidistant steps appear at the second matching field H_2 when the flow of the interstitial vortex lattice in the periodic potential created by the antidots and the vortices trapped by them, is in phase with the applied rf frequency. Therefore, the observation of Shapiro steps clearly reveals the presence of mobile intersitial vortices in superconducting films with regular pinning arrays. The interstitial vortices, moved by the driving current, coexist with immobile vortices strongly pinned at the antidots.

We present a detailed study of the transport properties of a superconducting Pb/Cu microdot with a 2x2 antidot cluster. The superconducting-normal (S/N) phase boundary, critical currents and current-voltage characteristics of this structure have been measured. The S/N phase boundary as a function of field B (T_c(B)) reveals an oscillatory structure caused by the limited number of possible vortex configurations which can be realized in these small clusters of pinning centres (antidots). We have analyzed the stability of these configurations and discussed the possible dissipation mechanisms using the critical current (J_c(B)) and voltage-current (V(I)) characteristics data. A comparison of the experimental data of T_c(B) and J_c(B) with calculations in the London limit of the Ginzburg-Landau theory confirms that vortices can indeed be pinned by the antidots forming a cluster and that the ground-state configurations of the vortices are noticeably modified by sending current through the structure. The possibility of generating phase-slips as well as motion of the vortices in the 2x2 antidot cluster has also been discussed.

We have studied quantization and confinement effects in nanostructured superconductors. Three different types of nanostructured samples were investigated: individual structures (line, loop, dot), 1-dimensional (1D) clusters of loops and 2D clusters of antidots, and finally large lattices of antidots. Hereby, a crossover from individual elementary "plaquettes", via clusters, to huge arrays of these elements, is realized. The main idea of our study was to vary the boundary conditions for confinement of the superconducting condensate by taking samples of different topology and, through that, modifying the lowest Landau level E_LLL(H). Since the critical temperature versus applied magnetic field T_c(H) is, in fact, E_LLL(H) measured in temperature units, it is varied as well when the sample topology is changed through nanostructuring. We demonstrate that in all studied nanostructured superconductors the shape of the T_c(H) phase boundary is determined by the confinement topology in a unique way.
