Vanadium diselenide (VSe2) has intriguing physical properties such as unexpected ferromagnetism at the two-dimensional limit. However, the experimental results for room temperature ferromagnetism are still controversial and depend on the detailed crystal structure and stoichiometry. Here we introduce crystal truncation rod (CTR) analysis to investigate the atomic arrangement of bilayer VSe2 and bilayer graphene (BLG) hetero-structures grown on a 6H-SiC(0001) substrate. Using non-destructive CTR analysis, we were able to obtain electron density profiles and detailed crystal structure of the VSe2/BLG heterostructures. Specifically, the out-of-plane lattice parameters of each VSe2 layer were modulated by the interface compared to that of the bulk VSe2 1T phase. The atomic arrangement of the VSe2/BLG heterostructure provides deeper understanding and insight for elucidating the magnetic properties of the van der Waals heterostructure.

Abstract:
Employing graphites having distinctly different mean grain sizes, we study the effects of polycrystallinity on the pattern formation by ion-beam-sputtering. The grains influence the growth of the ripples in highly anisotropic fashion; Both the mean uninterrupted ripple length along its ridge and the surface width depend on the mean size of the grains, which is attributed to the large sputter yield…

Employing graphites having distinctly different mean grain sizes, we study the effects of polycrystallinity on the pattern formation by ion-beam-sputtering. The grains influence the growth of the ripples in highly anisotropic fashion; Both the mean uninterrupted ripple length along its ridge and the surface width depend on the mean size of the grains, which is attributed to the large sputter yield at the grain boundary compared with that on terrace. In contrast, the ripple wavelength does not depend on the mean size of the grains. Coarsening of the ripples-accompanying the mass transport across the grain boundaries-should not be driven by thermal diffusion, rather by ion-induced processes.

We have investigated the initial growth behavior and resulting microstructural properties of heteroepitaxial ZnO thin films prepared by pulsed laser deposition on sapphire (0001) substrates. High-resolution x-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy studies revealed that the initial growth behavior and the microstructure of the films significantly depend on the growth parameters. ZnO films grown at 700 oC with 20 mTorr O2 partial pressure initiated with a columnar growth mode and contained two kinds of domains. These domains were in-plane orientated either ZnO[112-0]//Al2O3[101-0] or ZnO[101-0]//Al2O3[101-0], and were surrounded by highly defective domain boundaries with threading dislocations. The films grown at 800 oC with 1 mTorr O2 showed 2-dimensional layered growth with only one in-plane epitaxial relationship, ZnO[112-0]//Al2O3[101-0]. Most of the defects in the layered grown films were basal plane stacking faults near the interface between ZnO and the substrate. The formation mechanism of the 30o-twisted domains with the in-plane orientation of ZnO[101-0]//Al2O3[101-0] is discussed.

Abstract:
For thin films of superfluid adsorbed on a disordered substrate, we derive the equation of motion for a vortex in the presence of a random potential within a mean field (Hartree) description of the condensate. The compressible nature of the condensate leads to an effective pinning potential experienced by the vortex which is nonlocal, with a long range tail that smoothes out the random potential…

For thin films of superfluid adsorbed on a disordered substrate, we derive the equation of motion for a vortex in the presence of a random potential within a mean field (Hartree) description of the condensate. The compressible nature of the condensate leads to an effective pinning potential experienced by the vortex which is nonlocal, with a long range tail that smoothes out the random potential coupling the condensate to the substrate. We interpret this nonlocality in terms of images, and relate the effective potential governing the dynamics to the pinning energy arising from the expectation value of the Hamiltonian with respect to the vortex wavefunction.

Abstract:
Monte Carlo simulations are performed to study the properties of type-II superconducting films in a magnetic field in which the vortices move in the two-dimensional geometry represented by the surface of a sphere. Monte Carlo simulations are performed to study the properties of type-II superconducting films in a magnetic field in which the vortices move in the two-dimensional geometry represented by the surface of a sphere. No numerical evidence is found for any melting transition, although the correlation length over which vortex crystalline order exists grows as the temperature is reduced. At low temperatures, the relaxation timescales are of an Arrhenius form which can be associated with the creation of dislocations of a size comparable to the correlation length.
