Precise positioning of single site-controlled inverted pyramidal InGaAs QD at the antinode of a GaAs photonic crystal cavity with nanometer-scale accuracy holds unique advantages compared to self-assembled QDs and offers great promise for practical on-chip photonic quantum information processing. However, the strong coupling regime in this geometry has not yet been achieved due to the low cavity Q-factor based on the (111)B-oriented membrane structures. Here, we reveal the onset of phonon-mediated coherent exciton-photon interaction on our tailored single site-controlled InGaAs QD - photonic crystal cavity. Our results present a Rabi-like oscillation of luminescence intensity between excitonic and photonic components correlated with their energy splitting pronounced at small detuning. Such Rabi-like oscillation is well reproduced by modeling the coherent exchange of the exciton-photon population. The modeling further reveals an oscillatory two-time covariance at QD-cavity resonance, which indicates that the system operates at the onset of the strong coupling regime. Moreover, by using the cavity mode as a probe of the virtual state of the QD induced by phonon scattering, it reveals an increase in phonon scattering rates near the QD-cavity resonance and asymmetric phonon emission and absorption rate even around 50 K.

The exotic properties of two-dimensional (2D) materials and 2D heterostructures, built by forming heterogeneous multi-layered stacks, have been widely explored across a number of subject matters following the goal to invent, design, and improve applications enabled by 2D materials. To successfully harvest these unique properties effectively and increase the yield of manufacturing 2D material-based devices for achieving reliable and repeatable results is the current challenge. The scientific community has introduced various experimental transfer systems explained in detail for exfoliated 2D materials, however, the field lacks statistical analysis and the capability of producing a transfer technique enabling; i) high transfer precision and yield, ii) cross-contamination free transfer, iii) multi-substrate transfer, and iv) rapid prototyping without wet chemistry. Here we introduce a novel 2D material deterministic transfer system and experimentally show its high accuracy, reliability, repeatability, and non-contaminating transfer features by demonstrating fabrication of 2D material-based optoelectronic devices featuring novel device physics and unique functionality. Such rapid and material-near prototyping capability can accelerate not only layered material science in discovery but also engineering innovations.

We investigate the exciton complexes photoluminescence, dynamics and photon statistics in the concurrent strong weak coupling regime in our unique site controlled singular inverted pyramidal InGaAs/GaAs quantum dots photonic crystal cavities platform. Different from a clear boundary between strong and weak QD cavity coupling, we demonstrate the strong and weak coupling can coexist dynamically, as a form of intermediate regime mediated by phonon scattering. The detuning dependent microphotoluminescence spectrum reveals concurrence of exciton cavity polariton mode avoided crossing, as a signature of Rabi doublet of the strong coupled system, the blue shifting of coupled exciton cavity mode energy near zero detuning ascribed to the formation of collective states mediated by phonon assisted coupling, and their partial out of synchronization linewidth narrowing linked to their mixed behavior. By detailing the optical features of strongly confined exciton-photon complexes and the quantum statistics of coupled cavity photons, we reveal the dynamics and antibunching/bunching photon statistical signatures of the concurrent strong weak intermediate coupled system at near zero-detuning. This study suggests our device has potential for new and subtle cavity quantum electrodynamical phenomena, cavity enhanced indistinguishable single photon generation, and cluster state generation via the exciton-photon complexes for quantum networks.

An intrinsic antiferromagnetic topological insulator $\mathrm{MnBi_2Te_4}$ can be realized by intercalating Mn-Te bilayer chain in a topological insulator, $\mathrm{Bi_2Te_3}$. $\mathrm{MnBi_2Te_4}$ provides not only a stable platform to demonstrate exotic physical phenomena, but also easy tunability of the physical properties. For example, inserting more $\mathrm{Bi_2Te_3}$ layers in between two adjacent $\mathrm{MnBi_2Te_4}$ weakens the interlayer magnetic interactions between the $\mathrm{MnBi_2Te_4}$ layers. Here we present the first observations on the inter- and intra-layer phonon modes of $\mathrm{MnBi_{2n}Te_{3n+1}}$ (n=1,2,3,4) using cryogenic low-frequency Raman spectroscopy. We experimentally and theoretically distinguish the Raman vibrational modes using various polarization configurations. The two peaks at 66 cm$^{-1}$ and 112 cm$^{-1}$ show an abnormal perturbation in the Raman linewidths below the magnetic transition temperature due to spin-phonon coupling. In $\mathrm{MnBi_4Te_7}$, the $\mathrm{Bi_2Te_3}$ layers induce Davydov splitting of the A$_{1g}$ mode around 137 cm$^{-1}$ at 5 K. Using the linear chain model, we estimate the out-of-plane interlayer force constant to be $(3.98 \pm 0.14) \times 10^{19}$ N/m$^3$ at 5 K, three times weaker than that of $\mathrm{Bi_2Te_3}$. Our work discovers the dynamics of phonon modes of the $\mathrm{MnBi_2Te_4}$ and the effect of the additional $\mathrm{Bi_2Te_3}$ layers, providing the first-principles guidance to tailor the physical properties of layered heterostructures.

Strongly-correlated polaritons in Jaynes-Cummings (JC) lattices can exhibit quantum phase transitions between the Mott-insulating and superfluid phases at integer fillings. The prerequisite to observe such phase transitions is to pump polariton excitations into a JC lattice and prepare them into appropriate ground states. Despite previous efforts, it is still challenging to generate many-body states with high accuracy. Here we present an approach for the robust preparation of many-body ground states of polaritons in finite-sized JC lattices by optimized nonlinear ramping. We apply a Landau-Zener type of estimation to this finite-sized system and derive the optimal ramping index for selected ramping trajectories, which can greatly improve the fidelity of the prepared states. With numerical simulation, we show that by choosing an appropriate ramping trajectory, the fidelity in this approach can remain close to unity in almost the entire parameter space. This approach can shed light on high-fidelity state preparation in quantum simulators and advance the implementation of quantum simulation with practical devices.

Vertically stacked van der Waals heterostructures constitute a promising platform for providing tailored band alignment with enhanced excitonic systems. Here we report observations of neutral and charged interlayer excitons in trilayer WSe2-MoSe2-WSe2 van der Waals heterostructures and their dynamics. The addition of a WSe2 layer in the trilayer leads to significantly higher photoluminescence quantum yields and tunable spectral resonance compared to its bilayer heterostructures at cryogenic temperatures. The observed enhancement in the photoluminescence quantum yield is due to significantly larger electron-hole overlap and higher light absorbance in the trilayer heterostructure, supported via first-principle pseudopotential calculations based on spin-polarized density functional theory. We further uncover the temperature- and power-dependence, as well as time-resolved photoluminescence of the trilayer heterostructure interlayer neutral excitons and trions. Our study elucidates the prospects of manipulating light emission from interlayer excitons and designing atomic heterostructures from first-principles for optoelectronics.

Quantum manipulation of macroscopic mechanical systems is of great interest in both fundamental physics and applications ranging from high-precision metrology to quantum information processing. A crucial goal is to cool the mechanical system to its quantum ground state. In this review, we focus on the cavity optomechanical cooling, which exploits the cavity enhanced interaction between optical field and mechanical motion to reduce the thermal noise. Recent remarkable theoretical and experimental efforts in this field have taken a major step forward in preparing the motional quantum ground state of mesoscopic mechanical systems. This review first describes the quantum theory of cavity optomechanical cooling, including quantum noise approach and covariance approach; then the up-to-date experimental progresses are introduced. Finally, new cooling approaches are discussed along the directions of cooling in the strong coupling regime and cooling beyond the resolved sideband limit.

The bright exciton emission of semiconducting carbon nanotubes is appealing for optoelectronic and quantum photonic devices as well as fundamental studies of light-matter interaction in one-dimensional nanostructures. The photophysics of excitons in carbon nanotubes till date is however largely affected by extrinsic effects of the dielectric environment. Here we carried out time-resolved photoluminescence measurements over 14 orders of magnitude for ultra-clean carbon nanotubes bridging an airgap over pillar posts. Our measurements demonstrate a new regime of intrinsic exciton photophysics with prolonged spontaneous emission times up to T1=18 ns, between one to two orders of magnitude better than prior measurements and in agreement with values first hypothesized by theorists about a decade ago. Further we establish for the first time the exciton decoherence times of individual nanotubes in the time-domain and found four-fold prolonged values up to T2=2.1 ps compared to ensemble measurements. These first observations motivate new discussions about the magnitude of the intrinsic dephasing mechanism while the prolonged exciton dynamics is promising for device applications.

Cavity quantum electrodynamics advances the coherent control of a single quantum emitter with a quantized radiation field mode, typically piecewise engineered for the highest finesse and confinement in the cavity field. This enables the possibility of strong coupling for chip-scale quantum processing, but till now is limited to few research groups that can achieve the precision and deterministic requirements for these polariton states. Here we observe for the first time coherent polariton states of strong coupled single quantum dot excitons in inherently disordered one-dimensional localized modes in slow-light photonic crystals. Large vacuum Rabi splittings up to 311 μeV are observed, one of the largest avoided crossings in the solid-state. Our tight-binding models with quantum impurities detail these strong localized polaritons, spanning different disorder strengths, complementary to model-extracted pure dephasing and incoherent pumping rates. Such disorder-induced slow-light polaritons provide a platform towards coherent control, collective interactions, and quantum information processing.

We demonstrate a new optomechanical device system which allows highly efficient transduction of femtogram nanobeam resonators. Doubly clamped nanomechanical resonators with mass as small as 25 fg are embedded in a high-finesse two-dimensional photonic crystal nanocavity. Optical transduction of the fundamental flexural mode around 1 GHz was performed at room temperature and ambient conditions, with an observed displacement sensitivity of 0.94 fm/Hz^(1/2). Comparison of measurements from symmetric and asymmetric double-beam devices reveals hybridization of the mechanical modes where the structural symmetry is shown to be the key to obtain a high mechanical quality factor. Our novel configuration opens the way for a new category of "NEMS-in-cavity" devices based on optomechanical interaction at the nanoscale.

We examine the multiple exciton population dynamics in PbS quantum dots by ultrafast spectrally-resolved supercontinuum transient absorption (SC-TA). We simultaneously probe the first three excitonic transitions over a broad spectral range. Transient spectra show the presence of first order bleach of absorption for the 1S_h-1S_e transition and second order bleach along with photoinduced absorption band for 1P_h-1P_e transition. We also report evidence of the one-photon forbidden 1S_{h,e}-1P_{h,e} transition. We examine signatures of carrier multiplication (multiexcitons for the single absorbed photon) from analysis of the first and second order bleaches, in the limit of low absorbed photon numbers (<N_{abs}>~ 10^-2), at pump energies from two to four times the semiconductor band gap. The multiexciton generation efficiency is discussed both in terms of a broadband global fit and the ratio between early- to long-time transient absorption signals.. Analysis of population dynamics shows that the bleach peak due to the biexciton population is red-shifted respect the single exciton one, indicating a positive binding energy.
