Abstract: Prior work on information technology (IT) adoption and economic impacts typically employs an instrumental logic in which firms lead with innovation when they possess characteristics that make it economically beneficial to do so and lag when they do not. However, firms may deviate from this idealized picture when they possess characteristics of an innovation laggard but exhibit the behavior of an innovation leader (or vice versa), with implications for the returns to IT investment.

SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT, SO CRITICAL TO THE EFFECTIVE USE OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY, IS POORLY UNDERSTOOD AND MANAGED. NUMEROUS SOFTWARE engineering process innovations have been proposed to improve software development, the latest of which is object orientation. How can information systems managers decide whether to invest in such technologies? This paper proposes a general two-dimensional framework based on theories about organizational and communitywide technology adoption.

Abstract Information systems have great potential to reduce healthcare costs and improve outcomes. The purpose of this special issue is to offer a forum for theory-driven research that explores the role of IS in the delivery of healthcare in its diverse organizational and regulatory settings. We identify six theoretically distinctive elements of the healthcare context and discuss how these elements increase the motivation for, and the salience of, the research results reported in the nine papers comprising this special issue.

Abstract This paper extends the dominant paradigm of IS innovation research by analyzing the extent to which organizations adopt electronic networking technologies (ENT) sub-optimally and measuring the implications on organizational performance. We advance the concept of innovation misfit by drawing on extant economic and organizational theories to develop a set of propositions linking the degree of misfit to productivity.

Abstract Object-oriented (OO) technology represents one of the most important innovations in software process technology to emerge in the last twenty years. Beginning in the early 1990's, we performed four longitudinal cases studies of early adoption of OO to gain an understanding of what challenges early adopters face, and what strategies can be used to overcome those challenges.

IS researchers have spent 16 considerable time exploring the impact and implications of these tools in organizations, but those 17 same researchers have not spent sufficient time considering whether and how these new 18 technologies may provide opportunities for us to reform our core practices of research, review, 19 and teaching.

Many companies that have made considerable investments in IT applications to support their product development activities have realized limited value from such efforts. In this chapter, we argue that a deep understanding of the complementarities that exist in the product development context is critical to ensure that business value is derived from the IT applications.
