Asset management is the systematic process of deploying, operating, maintaining, upgrading and disposing of built environment assets. Effective asset management requires the involvement of all levels of an organisation in planning, control and monitoring of asset performance that combines management, financial, economic and other activities and practices. This paper aims to propose and evaluate a framework for digital asset information management, including four elements—data exchange, classification system, location referencing and information requirement. This framework is validated through interviews with a road agency in Australia. It is expected that this framework is useful for road agencies to evaluate their current practices and take appropriate actions towards digital asset information management

The new competitive international business environment is characterised by constant change and uncertainty. This is particularly true in project-oriented industries such as construction where subcontracting and competitive tendering add new dimensions to an already uncertain working environment. Many management writers and practitioners argue that the changing business environment and the speed required to design, develop and market products and services will lead to increasing use of project management in the future. This means that project management skills will become a competitive weapon for those individuals and firms that properly develop them.

This paper reports on a current case study of green building initiatives implemented by the Western Australian government in the past decade. The intent is to provide a qualitative understanding of past R&D investments in the Australian built environment. The case method was selected to illustrate three sector-based investments, one of which is reported on here. The conceptual framework underpinning interview design and data analysis uses dynamic capability, absorptive capacity and open innovation theories to better understand the organisational environment in which these initiatives were implemented. Data has been thematically coded to criteria identified from the literature to illustrate organisational characteristics which may have contributed to dissemination and impact. The results will be combined with two further case studies (construction safety and digital modelling), to inform this research. This industry supported project will conclude by developing policy guidelines for ...

Construction managers have for a long time focused their attention on conversion processes, with little attention given to flow activities, leading to uncertain flow processes, expansion of non value-adding activities, and reduction of output value. This paper investigates the incidence of non value-adding activities in construction projects in Indonesia and Australia, focusing on non-residential building and infrastructure projects. Data was collected via questionnaires and personal interviews targeting 99 respondents from Indonesia and 50 respondents from Australia. A quantitative approach was adopted for this research utilising the results of a questionnaire survey involving 53 variables that relate to non value-adding activities. The variables were then separated into two classifications: waste categories that contribute to a reduction in the value of construction productivity and waste cause variables that could be defined as factors producing waste. Statistical analysis was pe...

Construction scholars suggest that procurement processes can be used as mechanisms to change construction industry practices. This paper discusses industry changes as a response to the calls for integration of sustainability ideals into construction practices. Because major infrastructure construction has been identified as a key producer of greenhouse gas emissions (GHGE), this study explores collaborative procurement models that have been used to facilitate mitigation of GHGE. The study focuses on the application of non-price incentives and rewards that work together as a binary mechanism. Data were collected using mixed-methods: government document content analysis was complemented with data collected through focus groups and individual interviews with both clients and contractors. This report includes examples of greening procurement agendas for three Australian road authorities relating to collaborative procurement project delivery models. Three collaborative procurement models...

Summary In projecting change for the critical Australian construction industry, the CRC for Construction Innovation envisions a culture of self improvement through applied research and technology transfer. Construction Innovation is driving research outcomes into business practice in areas such as innovativeness, sustainability, procurement, project diagnostics and site safety. The group has also led the formation of an international alliance to ensure its activities are hitting the mark nationally and internationally. Through initiatives like these, the CRC for Construction Innovation is already providing a potent vehicle for change. This paper will briefly track the development of the CRC for Construction Innovation and highlight the collaborative processes in developing, managing and disseminating applied research; profile a number of its key outcomes to date; and discuss the future of applied research in Australia in the context of its Construction 2020 national initiative, its ...

Waste can significantly affect the business performance and productivity of contracting organisations. This paper aims to investigate the incidence of waste within contractors companies in Indonesia, focusing on non-residential building and infrastructure projects. Based on respondents ’ perceptions, data was collected through questionnaires and followed up by personal interviews. Paired-samples t-test was performed to group the importance of waste variables and waste causes variables. The findings suggest that six factors were found to be the key variables of waste including repair on finishing works, waiting for materials, delays to schedule, slow tradesmen, waste of raw materials on-site and lack of supervision. Whereas design changes, slowness in making decisions, lack of trades ’ skill, inappropriate construction methods, poor coordination among project participants, delay of material delivery to site and poor planning and scheduling were identified as the key variables causing...
