ABSTRACT Ubiquitous and cloud manufacturing systems have paved the way for the development of smart systems that can provide self-adaptive services to enhance quality of service and user experience, based on user and context awareness. However, current approaches to software adaptation have critical limitations when applied on software in a cloud environment, since cloud service engineers cannot be certain of the ‘nature’ of their users, regarding their needs and their evolution over time. This article proposes a user-centred framework that addresses self-adaptation of cloud services based on users’ distinct needs and requirements. It aims at leveraging existing human computer interaction approaches to explicitly and implicitly collect user-related data into the cloud. This collection later supports the delivery of adaptive cloud services, contextually relevant to users’ tasks and to their behavioural profiles. Such approaches have the potential to enhance the quality of cloud applications’ service and user experience in cloud-based manufacturing systems. A first prototype demonstration is also presented as a future platform composed of the first basic models (of the ones mentioned in this article) .Then, the platform will be further expanded for instantiation and evaluation in the context of cloud and ubiquitous computing environments.

In the paper we present first hand and personal experiences from the lack of branding and how much it can influence the failure of a project or a venture. We do so in terms of present a personal failure story, namely this of the PACE toolkit, a methodology that the author has co-developed at ALTEC Research Programmes Division for valuating intellectual and intangible assets, in parallel with the success story of the business model canvas developed by Alex Osterwalder. We emphasise on the need for e-business and e-commerce professionals and practitioners to more seriously and enthusiastically invest in branding related activities. Involving others such as future potential users or customers as well as investors is a key in the adoption and uptake of our offerings.

This introductory chapter aims to make clear the holistic nature of services to our lives linking the science part to the practice matters. Bringing examples for service successes and failures, this chapter shall help the reader position him or herself with the field under examination. We present and discuss the collaborative approach towards service design and the contextualisation of services as leverage for attaining competitive advantage. Critical factors are listed that concern relationship management in business service contexts and which are considered in terms of the collaboration dimension. The chapter closes with an examination of power dependencies and trust in collaborative service arrangements.

In the paper we present different approaches related to the conceptualisation of mistakes from the literature and situate them with a given methodological framework by Bourdieu. We also draw analogies with the notion of shadow capital and the relevance of applying reflexive learning as a practical means to deal with mistakes in the corporate environment.

In recent years the gap between educational theory and practice has been closing, but although there have been calls for ‘reflexivity’, there has been little critical examination of its meanings. Proposed reflexive methodologies still perpetuate many traditional hierarchies, and fail to consider the creative nature of the educational process as such. Much research work also takes place within the commercial sphere, and post-processual ideas cannot advance educational practice unless they can be implemented in some type of an e-learning system. In our Chapter we examine theoretical considerations of reflexivity, representation, subjectivity and experiential engagement to highlight their relevance to everyday educational practice, and their potential to undermine existing suboptimalities in the classroom.

We aim to deploy and validate a novel approach for mainstreaming inclusiveness and accessibility related solutions which can be programmed, distributed and executed in the form of Applications, thus capitalizing on the Application effect and the Applications market economies. This will help the wide scale adoption of innovative services for facilitation of social interactions of any type of intellectually, physically or technologically challenged person and the elderly, including workplace adaptation and assistance in the use of sophisticated access-to-service environments. The Learning Assets Innovation concept enables the interface to be personalized based on the user's needs and preferences which can then be configured into a personalized profile. This profile will underpin and inform all engagements between the user and selected existing technologies so as to impact positively on the effectiveness of the user in the context of learning, employability, and social interactions.

In this paper we are going to present a set of 5 future scenarios that were developed within the eAccessibility2020 study. The study aims to explore and analyse the referred relationships between the emerging ICT landscape, in the societal and economic context and the development and provision of assistive technologies (AT) and e-Accessibility, within a perspective of 10 years. The scenarios were developed after an initial trend analysis that the study team conducted based on data gathering. The scenarios were developed based on a methodology which defined a set of guides for scenario development and a set of visions for the future of eAccessibility.

This paper reports on the results of the eAccessibility 2020 study which was funded by the European Commission to explore and analyse the relationships between the emerging ICT landscape in the societal and economic context, and the development and provision of assistive technologies and eAccessibility within a perspective of the next 10 years. The methodology of the study included both desk research and direct contact with relevant actors through 2011 and 2012. The results of the study are summarised for different educational levels (from primary-school to post-university) and are presented in terms of core issues, which are the most important developments in the area that will concentrate research and development efforts; roadmaps, which are most probable elements of a future research agenda in the area; and potential scenarios, which are indicative and not necessarily representative examples of use cases that may appear in the field.

A scenario-based formal specification of interaction metaphors is proposed, which assists designers to develop interaction dialogues at a high-level of abstraction. A formalism has been developed which provides means for describing both application and metaphor semantics, as well as a descriptive model for the specification of interaction scenarios. The proposed approach has been applied for the construction of application scenarios

In the paper we address the research question of whether non-experienced and untrained end-users may efficiently design and customise their own interaction experiences as part of a tutoring system. To this end, we present the main end-user development (EUD) approaches highlighting user engagement, usability and user experience (UX) design principles. We examine aspects related to the triptych of efficiency, efficacy, satisfaction of all user development and learning activities. To this direction, we offer suggestions on how such a EUD approach for an Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS) setting can form part of a maker space for providing sustainable and hands-on learning experiences.

We build on the results of our MARIO project to support the benefit of informing research taking place in the area of development of human consciousness models for use by robots to facilitate human robot interaction with research results from the area of collaborative systems. The main outcome of such a research would be a software model of a robot assistant that might offer functionality and features of a ‘virtual coach’ with an in-built evolution capability.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the pedagogical basis of Adaptive Educational Hypermedia Systems (AEHS) that incorporate Learning Styles concerning learning paradigms and learning theories through a meticulous review of the relevant published work. We investigated twenty (20) AEHS and analyze them comparatively to a variety of adaptivity determinants. Two are the pivotal points that are crucial in exploration of pedagogical approaches of these systems: the locus of control and the provided learning material. We conclude that these systems are based mostly on the learning paradigm of Cognitivism and Constructivism. In addition, we assume that the concept of learning theory is not such a narrow term, given that networked world imposes the concept of personal learning.

This paper investigates the pedagogical basis of Adaptive Educational Hypermedia Systems (AEHS) that incorporate Learning Styles in order to accommodate user's learning style preferences and needs. Therefore, AES adapt the learning content, its presentation and navigation to the user's learning style preferences. We collect thirty three (33) Adaptive and Intelligent Web-based Educational Systems (AIWBES) that incorporate learning styles and discuss twenty of them, namely the AEHS, as the remaining are Intelligent Tutorng Systems. The main achievement of this work is the investigation of AEHS' pedagogical basis in terms of adaptation rules. We conclude that these systems follow similar patterns in their adaptation logic.

Engaging end-users in creative and experiential e-learning activities by giving them the `right tools' can be viewed as a way to empower end-users in developing their own artifacts. The aim of this paper is to propose `e-learning-by-developing', a creative learning-by-experience methodology, that can support end-users to develop data intensive mobile applications. The proposed learning approach aims to create a training model for the acquisition of knowledge and development of skills for database-driven applications, by promoting active participation of the-user in the development process. Preliminary experimental evaluation showed that end-users, with limited prior database knowledge and development background, were able to quickly and efficiently design a relational scheme and create a reusable database driven mobile application.

This paper proposes a framework for the collaboration of teachers in special education. The framework builds on, and extends, social networking services, in order to facilitate collaboration amongst the various categories of stakeholders. The innovation of our approach lies, according to our view, in providing a Service Model and a platform for social networking by using WS directly for the needs of the individual users. Although simple and efficient WS creation tools already exist, our idea is focused on allowing teachers to socially interact with each other -based on WS creation and use- and to create value for themselves and the community.
