The ground and excited states properties of Zr isotopes are studied from proton to neutron drip lines using the relativistic (RMF) and nonrelativistic (SHF) mean-field formalisms with Bardeen–Cooper–Schrieffer (BCS) and Bogoliubov pairing, respectively. The well-known NL3* and SLy4 parameter sets are used in the calculations. We have found spherical ground and low-lying large deformed excited states in most of the isotopes. Several couples of Ωπ = 1/2± parity doublets configurations are noticed, while analyzing the single-particle energy levels of the large deformed configurations.

Hybrid nanocomposites based on N-doped SrTiO3 nanoparticles wrapped in g-C3N4 nanosheets were successfully prepared by a facile and reproducible polymeric citrate and thermal exfoliation method. The results clearly indicated that the N-doped SrTiO3 nanoparticles are successfully wrapped in layers of the g-C3N4 nanosheets. The g-C3N4/N-doped SrTiO3 nanocomposites showed absorption edges at longer wavelengths compared with the pure g-C3N4 as well as N-doped SrTiO3. The hybrid nanocomposites exhibit an improved photocurrent response and photocatalytic activity under visible light irradiation. Interestingly, the hybrid nanocomposite possesses high photostability and reusability. Based on experimental results, the possible mechanism for prolonged lifetime of the photoinduced charge carrier was also discussed. Premature closure is a type of cognitive error in which the physician fails to consider reasonable alternatives after an initial diagnosis is made. It is a common cause of delayed diagnosis and misdiagnosis borne out of a faulty clinical decision-making process. The authors present a case of aortic dissection in which premature closure was avoided by the aggressive pursuit of the appropriate differential diagnosis, and discuss the importance of disciplined clinical decision-making in the setting of chest pain.

ABSTRACT Hierarchical ZnO “rod like” architecture was successfully synthesized via reverse micellar route and characterized by various techniques. The FESEM studies show controlled decomposition of zinc oxalate into ZnO “rod like” architecture at 500 °C with slow heat rate at 1°/min. Interestingly, improved photocatalytic activity was observed for the degradation of Rhodamine B, due to the self assembly of hexagonal nanoparticles of zinc oxide forming hierarchical ZnO “rod like” architecture which can greatly enhance the light utilization rate due to its special architecture and enlarge the specific surface area, providing more reaction sites and promoting mass transfer. More importantly, the reusability studies of this architecture were most economical.

Large, soluble polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have been synthesized using Zr-mediated and Stille-type biphenylation reactions. Both the Zr and Stille methodologies have been adopted to incorporate tert-butyl substituents, permitting the direct synthesis of alkylated PAHs that are much more soluble than their unsubstituted analogues. To demonstrate the utility of these methods and the importance of solubilizing functionality, several large PAHs were synthesized and crystallographically characterized. The scope of the Zr-mediated and Stille methodologies is shown to be complementary. The Stille methodology often gives higher yields but is ineffective for the introduction of strain and failed with some polybrominated arenes. In these difficult cases, the zirconium methodology is effective, albeit in low yields.

The relationship between trichophagia, the compulsive eating of hair, and trichobezoar, the accumulation of hair within the gastrointestinal tract, illustrates the importance of the mind-body connection. Physicians ought to be cognizant of this association in the evaluation of colonic obstruction as colonic trichobezoars, though uncommon, carry a high mortality rate. Incorporation of the psychiatric and dermatological examinations is a simple way to raise clinical suspicion for the presence of a trichobezoar, and to prompt early and appropriate surgical treatment. Even after resolution, treatment of the underlying trichophagia is highly recommended to prevent future complications.

ABSTRACT Studies of [Co(pda)(bix)] n , [Ni(pda)(bix)(H 2 O)] n , [Cu(pda) (bix) 2 (H 2 O) 2 ] n ·8nH 2 O, [Co 2 (μ-OH)(pda)(ptz)] n ·nH 2 O, [Co(hfipbb) (bix) 0.5 ] n , and [Co(2,6-pydc)(bix) 1.5 ] n ·4nH 2 O ABSTRACT: Six new metal complexes with the formulae [Co(pda)(bix)] n (1), [Ni(pda)(bix)(H 2 O)] n (2), [Cu(pda)-(bix) 2 (H 2 O) 2 ] n ·8nH 2 O (3), [Co 2 (μ-OH)(pda)(ptz)] n ·nH 2 O (4), [Co(hfipbb)(bix) 0.5 ] n (5), and [Co(2,6-pydc)-(bix) 1.5 ] n ·4nH 2 O (6) have been synthesized by the reactions of Co(II), Ni(II), and Cu(II) salts with two flexible ligands 1,4-phenylenediaceticacid (H 2 pda) and 1,4-bis (imidazole-1-ylmethyl)-benzene (bix) in the presence of coligands 5-(4-pyridyl) tetrazole (4-ptz), 4,4′(hexa-fluoroisopropylidene)bis-(benzoicacid) (H 2 hfipbb), and 2,6-pyridine dicarboxylic acid (2,6-H 2 pydc) and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, IR spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric (TG) analysis. Because of the coordination geometry around the metal ions and the diverse coordination modes of the flexible ligands in combination with the rigid and flexible coligands, the obtained complexes show diverse structures from a one-dimensional (1D) chain to three-dimensional (3D) coordination polymers. 1, 4, 5, and 6 are Co(II) complexes in which Co(II) ions show tetrahedral coordination in 1, trigonal bipyrimidal coordination in 4, and octahedral coordination in 5 and 6. Complexes 2 and 3 are respectively Ni(II) and Cu(II) complexes in which the metal ions are present in octahedral coordination geometries. Factors affecting the conformational change of the flexible ligands in the self-assembly process of coordination polymers, such as, coordination geometry around the metal ions and geometry of the coligands have been systematically studied. The rotation of the bonds C(sp 3)−C(sp 2) and C(sp 3)−N(sp 3) in H 2 pda and bix ligands causes different conformations (cis, trans, gauche); these conformations have been studied by measuring the torsion angle. A comparative study between the torsion angle of the particular conformation of the ligands and coordination geometry of metal ion/geometry of the coligand has been undertaken. All the possible cis, trans, and gauche conformations of the flexible ligands have been obtained/observed in our complexes. Theoretical calculations were performed to determine the energies of the different conformations of the flexible ligands. The electronic properties of these complexes have also been investigated in the solid state at room temperature. Finally, the temperature-dependent magnetic studies for compounds 4 and 5 are described.

Vascular angiogenesis is regulated by a number of cytokines of which vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-A/and its receptor vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 (VEGFR2) play an indisputable role. Similarly lymphangiogenesis is regulated by VEGF-C and its receptor VEGFR3. Currently for treating vasculogenesis diseases such as proliferative retinopathies and cancer, a number of anti-VEGF-A therapies are approved for clinical use. Although clinical efficacies achieved are remarkable, they are found to be transitory in nature, followed by restoration of anti-VEGF therapy resistant angiogenesis. Recently the regulatory role of VEGF-C in initiating and potentiating neo-angiogenesis has been uncovered. Although the interactive nature of VEGF-A and C is known, the dynamics of their expression under knockdown conditions is yet to be established. Here in this study we have utilized siRNA to knockdown both VEGF-A and C either independently or in combination. Analysis of VEGF-A and C expression (only in cancer cell lines MCF7, A549 and H460 but not in the ocular cell line RPE19) has shown enhanced expression levels of VEGF-C with increase in knockdown of VEGF-A. However, VEGF-C knockdown has resulted in decreased expression levels of VEGF-A both in RPE19 and MCF7 cells in a dose dependent manner. In addition, VEGF-C knockdown also resulted in decreased expression of RhoA. Further, knockdown studies of RhoA even with supplementation of VEGF-C or A has resulted in decreased endothelial cell proliferation and stress fiber formation, indicating that VEGF-C does promote angiogenesis via RhoA mediated pathway.

Active learning is an effective learning approach. In this article we present an intelligent agent-assisted environment for active learning to better support the student-centered, selfpaced, and highly interactive learning approach. The environment uses the students learningrelated profile such as learning style and background knowledge in selecting, organizing, and presenting learning material, and it adopts a new approach to course content organization and delivery based on smart instructional components that can be integrated into a wide range of courses. The environment is being implemented using the prevalent Internet, Web, digital library, and multiagent technologies.
