Using SciVal, this article examines the bibliometric data of the Philippines’ most research-productive higher education institutions (HEIs) to provide policy recommendations that will collectively boost the research production of the country. The study reveals that 1) NCR leads in the bulk research production, number of authors, citations per paper, percentage of papers in the top 10% journals, percentage of papers with international collaboration, and percentage of papers with corporate collaboration. However, statistically significant differences among these regionally clustered most research-productive Philippine HEIs are limited to bulk research production, number of authors, and percentage of papers with corporate collaboration; 2) Privately-owned HEIs perform much better than publicly-owned HEIs, but the statistical differences are limited only to bulk research production and number of authors; 3) the statistically significant correlations among the bibliometric data are limited to bulk research production and number of authors, bulk research production and number of citations, number of authors and number of citations, number of authors and percentage of papers with institutional collaboration, and number of citations per paper and percentage of papers in top 10% journals. These results underscore that in a knowledge-based economy where research production is recognized as a key element in building the competitive edge of any industrialized country, there is an urgent need for the country’s policymakers and HEI research managers to monitor the trends in the research productivity of the Philippines’ most research-productive HEIs.

The article describes and assesses the De La Salle University Senior High School's (DLSU SHS) Research Program. Six components of Fung's Connected Curriculum Framework were utilized to describe the perspectives and experiences of stakeholders. Using an explanatory sequential research technique, it was found that administrators, teachers, and students rated Dimension 5 (creation of outputs aimed at an audience) the highest, while Dimension 6 (student interaction with each other and with alumni) was evaluated the least. Stakeholders generally see the Research Program positively and as a vital college-preparatory experience. The findings situate the DLSU SHS in the ongoing transition of DLSU to a full-fledged research university, the Department of Education's direction to strengthen the research culture in basic education, and the post-pandemic education that highlights adaptable and resilient research programs that can continue to thrive amidst disruptions and unprecedented challenges. Furthermore, since research plays a vital role in the senior high school curriculum, the outcomes of this study may be used as a benchmark in the sphere of Philippine basic education.

In this study, we described the lived experiences of eight Filipino journalists by centering on the changes and challenges they encountered in their profession during the COVID-19 pandemic and their prospective outlook on journalism practice in the future. We observed the following criteria in the selection of the journalists who participated in the study: a) the journalist has experienced pre-pandemic fieldwork; b) is active in the profession during the pandemic; and c) continues to be active in the journalism industry in the present. From the thematic analysis, we noted that the eight journalist informants navigated the shifts and struggles brought about by the pandemic with (1) restricted reportage, (2) health and economic challenges, (3) rampant disinformation and public distrust of the media, (4) continuous attacks, and (5) persistent sustenance of journalism as a practice. Despite all the dangers that come with their profession, journalists remain optimistic and unrelenting in pursuing their careers due to the fulfillment of the job and remain hopeful for the years to come. In light of the findings, we recommend further studies that will uncover the factors influencing the perils and threats to journalists and the varied experiences of these journalists from different media types.

Finding accessible and contextualized resources for Philippine language and literature topics was a difficult task even before the pandemic. Since the onset of COVID-19, obtaining educational materials has become more challenging, and more so with studies on open educational resources in the Philippine context. With these issues, the study initially identified existing and available open educational resources (OERs) on Philippine language and literature. In particular, the paper concentrated on two OERs, namely, Kadluan and Aklatang Bayan. Afterward, the selected OERs were assessed using the principles of fitness for purpose. Kadluan and Aklatang Bayan's strengths lie in their ease of use, material organization, and user interface. However, the legal aspects of both OERs provide limitations on how materials can be used despite their accessibility. Additionally, both OERs championed knowledge production and consolidation with Aklatang Bayan publishing research and creative works of Sentro ng Wikang Filipino as the publisher and Kadluan serving as a consolidation of open-access works of Filipino researchers. Additionally, both OERs were developed with inclusivity on gender and culture. Meanwhile, the two examined OERs also need to develop the integration of curricular progression, a variety of multimedia materials, and the space for sharing and engagement with and among users. The article is vital because it not only enriches the limited discourse on OERs in the country, but also envisions sustainable, inclusive, and responsive digital materials for Filipino learners in this post-pandemic era.

This paper is a visual analysis on photographs that were gathered from the main and secondary pages of the websites of the Philippines’ top four higher educational institutions (HEIs), namely University of the Philippines Diliman (UPD), Ateneo De Manila University (ADMU), De La Salle University (DLSU), and University of Santo Tomas (UST). Specifically, this paper used denotative reading, analysis of visual grammar, and connotative reading on the photographs to ascertain how each of these four Philippine HEIs represented their self-images in contradistinction with each other in terms of their teaching, research, extension, internationalization, campus and facilities, and student life, as well as their overall positioning. This paper was able to establish that UPD has strongest self-representation in teaching, and campus and facilities; ADMU in campus and facilities, and teaching; DLSU in teaching and student life; and UST in student life, and campus and facilities. This paper was also able to establish that UPD has the weakest self-representation in extension and internationalization; ADMU in research and extension; DLSU in extension and internationalization; and UST in research and internationalization. This paper is significant as it is the first publication that analyzes the websites of Philippine HEIs and even of Philippine corporations, while contributing to meager international literature on websites of HEIs and corporations. By looking at individual and collective self-representations of the top Philippine HEIs, this paper aims to gather insights on the status of Philippine higher education including the challenges it faces.

Using the Scopus database, this paper examines the indigeneity trend of the Philippine research outputs, as represented by its top four comprehensive universities, from 2012 to 2021. The researchers adapted the indigeneity metric of Siddiqi et al. (2016) in bibliometric analysis, which is defined by the domesticity of a given publication's corresponding author and is equated with the rootedness of a given publication on the capacities and concerns of the publication's domicile country and is further equated with such domicile country's potential to compete against the knowledge-based powers of Euro-American countries. From 2012 to 2021, in as far as the case studies of this paper are concerned, the Philippines' Scopus-indexed papers grew at an annual average rate of 13.43%. The country's growth rate of indigenous Scopus-indexed papers, at 13.87%, is growing slightly faster than its total number of Scopus-indexed papers. This trend suggests to the country's policymakers and research managers that with the expected increase of the country's total Scopus-indexed papers, driven by the new graduate studies publication requirement and the tighter promotion requirement within the state universities, there is a need to constantly monitor the percentage increase of the country's indigenized papers so that the country can more tightly connect its research activities and productions with the vision of building its competitive advantage.

The paper aims to contribute to the limited corpus of studies on alternative media and describe how AlterMidya – People’s Alternative Media Network (AlterMidya), the national network of independent and alternative media outfits, institutions, practitioners, and individuals in the Philippines, provides alternative news in the country. Using van Dijk’s conceptual categories and Fairclough’s three- dimensional model, the research analysed AlterMidya’s 1) news articles (text), 2) process of production and interpretation of text (discourse practice), and 3) the existing cultural, political, historical, and social situations and contexts in Philippine media (socio-cultural practice). The results of the study showed that AlterMidya provides alternative news in the country by challenging the dominant capitalist content and practices, and constructing its own system, culture, and tradition in journalism. The national network describes society through the lens of the marginalized groups, communities, and sectors that are underrepresented, misrepresented, or unrepresented in the dominant media. Finally, AlterMidya is not only limited to providing counter-narratives to dominant stories but also plays a pivotal role in the current information crisis and the various issues and problems that exist in Philippine society.

Ghosting is a popular term in mass media that has continued to baffle many with its ambiguity as a dissolution strategy. Multiple studies in the past have explored ghosting within romantic relationships, examining how this dissolution strategy has impacted the two parties involved: the initiator (ghoster) and the non-initiator (ghostee). However, it has been stated that ghosting can exist outside of romantic relationships as it may also occur within friendships or even if the relationship is questionably nonexistent. The objectives of the paper seek to understand how ghosting happens within these non-romantic relationships, its effects on the initiators and non-initiators, and its possible differences when compared to romantic relationships. Semi-structured interviews were conducted through video communication platforms on thirty respondents ages 18-25 who have experienced ghosting or been ghosted by a friend. Through the use of descriptive phenomenological qualitative study, the re...
