ΠΕΡΙΛΗΨΗ: Με βάση το χρονολογουμενο από τον 2ο αι. π.Χ. ως τον 3ο αι. μ.Χ. επιγραφικό υλικό της Ηλείας, το οποίο στο μεγαλύτερο μέρος του προέρχεται από το ιερό της Ολυμπίας, μελετάται η διείσδυση των ρωμαϊκών ονομάτων και της ρωμαϊκής πολιτείας στην περιοχή. Οι πρώτοι φορείς τους εμφανίζονται στη στροφή προς τον Ιο αι. μ.Χ., ανήκουν στην τοπική élite και οφείλουν το προνόμιο αυτό στις προσω πικές τους σχέσεις με νεαρούς γόνους του αυτοκρατορικού οίκου, με τους οποίους συνδέθηκαν με την ευ καιρία της συμμετοχής των τελευταίων στους Ολυμπιακούς αγώνες. Η διάδοση των ρωμαϊκών ονομάτων στην Ηλεία αυξάνεται από το δεύτερο μισό του Ιου αι. μ.Χ. Ανάμεσα στους πρώιμους φορείς σπάνιων gentilicia πρέπει ίσως να συνυπολογιστούν και μέλη της κοινότητος των "'Ρωμαίων ένγαιούντων".

ON THE VOCABULARY OF SUPREMACY: THE QUESTION OF PROTEUONTES REVISITED * ZUSAMMENFASSUNG. Die vornehmsten Bürger der Städte, die ursprünglich den inof-fiziellen Titel proteuon trugen, der bloß ihre vornehme Stellung bezeichnete, kommen ab dem Ende des 3./Anfang des 4. n. Chr. als Träger eines grossen Einflusses vor. Die pro-teuontes haben Aufsichtspflichten hauptsächlich über die Finanzen der Stadt und die Durchführung von öffentlichen Bauten sowie auf weitere Bereiche, wo von ihnen eine bes-timmte von den jeweiligen Notfällen diktierte Rolle gefordert wurde. Im Rahmen des immer mehr zentralisierten diokletianischen Verwaltungssystems, in welchem die Städte beinahe kaum mehr eine echte Selbstverwaltung ausübten und die lokalen Räte allmäh-lich ihre traditionelle Rolle verloren und ab dem 5./6. Jh. n. Chr. zu verschwinden began-nen, übernahmen die proteuontes erkennbare institutionelle Pflichten, die vom Kaiser oder seinen Vertretern beschlossen und beauftragt wurden.

Il s'agit d'une première lecture synthétique des données épigraphiques, paysagères, archéologiques et autres concernant les interventions romaines dans le paysage urbain et rural de la Macédoine et de l'Achaïe depuis l'apparition politique et militaire des Romains en péninsule hellénique et jusqu'à la fin du Ile siècle après J.-C. Les actions et les mécanismes adoptés pour y parvenir sont révélateurs des projets politiques romains quant aux cités grecques et encore plus quant au rôle qu'ils leur assignaient dans le cadre de leur Empire. Zusammenfassung Die vorliegende Arbeit stellt den ersten Versuch für die Sammlung und die Interpretierung der epigraphischen, topogTaphischen und archäologischen Belege dar, die sich auf die Organisierung des städtischen und agrarischen Raumes der Provinzen Macedonia und Achaia durch die Römer beziehen. Die obengenannten Belege sind von den Anfängen der römischen politischen und militärischen Tätigkeit auf der hellenischen Halbinsel bis zum Ende des 2. Jhs. n. Chr. zu datieren. Die verwendeten Methoden und Prozeduren fur die Einrichtung dieser Ordnung der Provinzen bezeugen die politischen Pläne der römischen Verwaltung bezuglich der griechischen Städte und ihrer Role im Rahmen des römischen Reiches.

Starting from 2018 the Italian Archaeological School at Athens runs a Seminars programme organized and hosted by the Post Doctoral Fellows of the current year.

Topics presented fall within the wide-range of the Fellows’ research interests and address in particular the themes of their own projects.

The talks are aimed at providing opportunity for debate and discussion.

Attendance of young scholars and students is particularly encouraged. However, the talks are open to everyone interested.

Up to 50 attendees will be admitted.
