The book is based on a 2009 PhD thesis with the same title, in line with the methodology of social history research focusing on church institutions, which started in the 1990s. The first complex analysis of the Late Mediveval middle clergy based on prosopographical research was published by József Köblös. He surveyed the the chapters of Buda, Fehérvár, Győr and Pozsony. In 2005 another book dealing with the Pécs chapter in the same methodological line was published by Tamás Fedeles. This book presents the Chapter of Várad (Oradea, Romania)
as an example representing the region east of the River Tisza and one of the most important church institutions in the country. It aims to determine the position of the Chapter of Várad in medieval Hungary so that it could be compared to the results of József Köblös’s and Tamás Fedeles’s research. The data collection began with the excessive work by Vince Bunyitay in the late 19th century, who published a book on the history of the Várad bishopric, rich in primary data, but lacking any further analysis. The present publication was based on all the documents issued by the Chapter in the researched period from
the DL-DF collection of the Hungarian National Archives. It also covers other prosopographical data from published sources – various document collections of families (Zichy, Károlyi, Bánffy, Perényi), charters of county authorities (e. g. Szabolcs and Bereg counties). To reconstruct the possessions of the canons’ relatives and families I used Pál Engel’s digital databases. In order to widen the scope of data collection registers of university students and the literature based on
these are also incorporated into this book.
