Abstract: The New Age and the 21st century, as turning points in the civilisational growth and development of mankind, should bring significant changes. The expectations of overall well-being are related to every aspect of social functioning. In a vast number of areas most likely to show an improvement education holds a very important place. There are numerous reasons why the best ideas coming from the reform pedagogical movements of the first half of the 20th century have not been entirely implemented. Posing various conditions and inventing excuses (sadly even in those serious and scientific terms) have very frequently created possibilities for introducing seemingly new ideas labelled with new terms which should have been examined thoroughly and then gradually and systematically introduced or ignored altogether. The ideas of active schools, schools without walls, free schools, child friendly schools, schools without failure, schools founded by pupils, etc. have marked the entire last century. The experiences of earlier reforms of the education system provide enough data which point to the existence of perpetual pedagogical antinomies which led to various manipulations between that which was and still is and that which should be aspired to. Thus it was easier to find excuses for various cosmetic changes which could not have been farther from the essential and radical ones. School should either be open or closed, traditional or modern, old or new, active or passive. Such tendencies towards black and white production led to the situation in which those fed up with the old considered the new negating it as an optimal solution and a chance not to be missed. Can holistic approach to education in itself be a chance for all those who participate in the process of education? What kind of conditions should be provided for the purpose of dissemination and social contextualisation of these ideas? How ready the teachers really are for substantive implementation of these ideas and how to prepare them? Should holism as a pedagogical tendency remain merely an idea or should it become reality depends on the willingness of the society to answer these questions.

Abstract: The most important characteristics of every system of education and upbringing are its consistency and continuity, which are reflected primarily in the continuity between its levels. Namely, every level should take the cue from that which had been achieved at the previous level and it should be a preparation for the level to come. Should this be neglected, the results previously achieved are in danger of being nullified, contents get duplicated, idling occurs and a stimulative function of educational institutions with regard to children´s development and learning is disregarded. It is of the utmost importance to preserve that which is of value in the current system of education, as well as to introduce innovations which should reflect the development of the system and the respect for the requests posed in front of the system in accordance with modern peagogical tendencies, primarily with the request for continuity. This paper principally considers the dimension of openness (flexibility) of the system of education and upbringing. The openness of the system is an important precondition for the development of the system which aspires to quality education for all. The level of its openness is one of the quality indicators in the entire system of education and upbringing. In that respect, the paper attempts to ascertain if the initiated reform of the system of education and upbringing made a step forward in the process of opening two levels of the system (pre-school and primary school), i.e. if they came closer in the attempt to become more connected. One of the goals of the reform is directed towards overcoming the discontinuity between pre-school institutions and primary schools.

Abstract: Holistic approaches to education of children represent contemporary and alternative approaches to education. One of such approaches is the Project approach itself, which is represented in this paper as an integrated and constitutive part of the Reggio concept curriculum. The Project approach to education of pre-school children implies a wide range of teaching and learning. It is not related to particular teaching techniques, or unchangable activities, routines and strategies. As a way of learning, the Project approach emphasises active participation of children in planning, developing and evaluating their own work. Knowledge does not mean transmission. Contrary to that, it is constructed through the interraction of both children and adults. When speaking about knowledge as a construction, and bearing in mind that both children and curriculum are looked upon holistically, this paper also stresses the fact that the Project approach in Reggio insists on the whole, i.e. on a holistic approach. The Project approach in the Reggio concept represents not only the means of forming experiences of children and pre-school teachers, but also the framework of their learning together. The project is primarily based on learning not only through doing, but also through discussions and discourses among children themselves and among children and pre-school teachers about their personal experiences in learning. All of this is done through the use of different techniques supported by documentation and reflexion.

Analogous to continuity in education, discontinuity in education could be defined as adults’ relation to children without taking into consideration natural and developmental characteristics of childhood. In that sense, discontinuity in education is a consequence of the emphasised tendency to view childhood only through the perspective of adults, thus neglecting the perspective of children. Furthermore, discontinuity in education can be seen in cases when adults support and allow the behaviour and activities of their children at an early period of their lives and then try to inhibit such actions later in their lives by stating that they are inadmissible and should be unlearnt. Discontinuity in the system of education happens when different education factors fail to coincide, that is to say, when there is no consistency which relies on common and unique principles in the support and action system, i.e. in relation to children. It is obvious that discontinuity in education triggers numerous education problems which occur during the development of a human being. Discontinuity in the system of education can be defined as the inconsistency of education practice in institutions at different system stages. This in turn often leads (due to unlearning) to annulling previously (at an early stage) reached results during the development. The experiences of some countries could be considered when attempting to overcome the existing discontinuity between the two stages of the system – Pre-school institution and Primary school.
