To evaluate the curative effect of the 132 KD protein isolated from the seeds of Peganum harmala (P. harmala) L. against carbon tetrachloride (CCl(4)) induced oxidative stress in rats. Animals were post treated intraperitoneally with 132 KD isolated protein at doses of 4 and 8 mg/kg body weight and bovine serum albumin (BSA) (8 mg/kg body weight) as well as vitamin C (250 mg/kg body weight p.o.) for 7 d after they challenged with CCl(4) orally (1 mL/kg body weight) in olive oil (50%) for 2 d. The purified protein from seeds of P. harmala plant showed in vitro antioxidant activity with DPPH assay. Administration of CCl(4) induced induction in serum aminotransferases (AST, ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), lipid profile parameters and liver malondialdehyde (MDA) and decrease in serum total protein, liver superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and reduced glutathione (GSH) levels. 132 KD protein treatment of rats post CCl4 intoxication successfully alleviated the toxic effects of ...

Inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) represents the most aggressive form of breast cancer, characterized by rapid progression, involvement of dermal lymphatic emboli and extensive metastatic lymph nodes. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are proteolytic enzymes that play an important role in cancer invasion and metastasis. Although the role of MMPs in non-IBC is well studied, little is known about its role in IBC. Thus the goal of the present study was to 1) investigate the expression and activity levels of membrane type matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MT1-MMP) and matrix metalloproteinase-2 and-9 (MMP-2 and MMP-9) in IBC versus non-IBC tissue samples and; 2) test correlation between expression of MT1-MMP and pro- and active forms of MMP-2 and MMP-9. We enrolled 51 breast cancer patients, 21 were diagnosed as IBC and 30 as non-IBC. Level of expression of MT1-MMP in carcinoma tissue was assessed by immunoblot and immunohistochemistry techniques. The expression and activation of MMP-2 and MMP-...

Malathionis an organophosphorous pesticide that is widely used in agricultural and household applications to control pests. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the ameliorator property of vitamin C or/and curcumin againstmalathion-induced hepatotoxicity in male mice at the biochemical and histological levels. The mice were divided into nine groups. The first three groups were served as a control, while, the second two groups were treated with two different doses of malathion (Low and High doses). The third and fourth groups were treated with high and low dose of malathion with Curcumin. The fifth and sixth groups were treated with malathion (Low and High doses) combined with vitamin C. Meanwhile the eighth and ninth groups were treated with vitamin C and curcumin combined with malathion (Low and High doses). The experiment was continuous for a period of 30 days.Exposure to malathion at the twoexamined doses to mice led to an alteration of liver functions and lipid parameters. Th...

The expression and activation of MMP-2 and MMP-9 was measured by gelatin zymography. Our results revealed that MT1-MMP, pro-MMP-2, pro-MMP-9 and active MMP-2 were more expressed in IBC tissue versus non-IBC. Furthermore, we found that MT1-MMP expression correlates with expression of pro-MMP-2, pro-MMP-9 and active MMP-2 in IBC tissue samples and with MMP-9 in non-IBC tissue sample. In conclusion, our study suggests a role of MT1-MMP in inflammatory breast cancer disease progression.

One hundred and thirty oesophageal muscles of slaughtered water buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis) were examined macroscopically for detection of Sarcocystis fusiformis cysts. The prevalence of S. fusiformis cysts in the examined buffaloes (3-6 years old) was 65 (50%), their dimensions ranged from 10.0-45.0 mm length & 1.5-7.0 mm width. Cats fed on fresh S. fusiformis cysts or those exposed to temperature at 50°C for 15 minutes were infected and shed Sarcocystis oocysts and sporocysts. Boiling of S. fusiformis cysts for 15 minutes, refrigeration for 3 days at 4oC and freezing for 2-3 months at -18 oC were effective in inactivating the cysts in buffalo meat. The antibodies against S. fusiformis were detected in 77 (59.23%) sera of the examined buffaloes by ELISA using bradyzoites of the same species. (Journal of American Science 2011; 7(7):55-57). C ryptosporidiosis is one of the most important causes of neonatal enteritis and diarrhea in calves leading to significant morbidity and mortality rates globally. This study was conducted to highlight the diagnostic methods of cryptosporidiosis in pre-weaned cattle calves. For this purpose, a total of 88 diarrheic faecal samples of pre-waned calves at Giza and El-Fayoum governorates, Egypt, were microscopically examined using Modified Ziehl-Neelsen staining (MZN), Immunochromatographic test (ICT) and Enzyme-linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA). The prevalence of infection was 71.59% (63/88), 73.86% (65/88), and 75.00% (66/88) for MZN, ICT, and ELISA respectively. The Sensitivity was 96.9%, 100%, and 100% whereas; Specificity was 100%, 100%, and 95.7% for MZN, ICT, and ELISA, respectively.
