ABSTRACT The paper discusses why IBM is interested in accelerating the development of a single data exchange format. There is a need for a variety of tools that are loosely characterized into two groups: fact extraction and fact usage. These tools have to produce data to share or have to share data from a number of producers. The key problem is the lack of tool interoperability

It is desirable to do systems programming in a high-level language. C is attractive since it yields efficient machine code without placing many restrictions on the programmer. This lack of restrictions and language-supported checking, however, can make C code unreadable and unmaintainable. Pascal is attractive since it provides strong type checking in a relatively elegant package but Pascal compilers don't

ABSTRACT In the post 9/11 era, population security and safety considerations have given rise to research needed for identification of threatening human activities and emotional behavior. Information and technology developments have helped provide law enforcement organizations with tools that assist in gathering and processing a wide spectrum of data inputs (from simple video inputs to more complex types of retina or fingerprint checks) as security measures against crime. Millions of sensors across the world are currently available to collect and store data about particular places or subjects of interest, including surveillance cameras, which are tirelessly collecting and storing real-time data that can help in identifying the root cause of an event.

This paper presents an empirical study investigating the impact of organizational social computing on employees’ innovative and in-role job performance. Specifically, we suggest that two key uses of social computing, representing the use of social computing tools for maintaining social relations and for generating and sharing content, are positively related to employees’ access to knowledge. Access to knowledge, in the

Virtual worlds, where thousands of people can interact simultaneously within the same three-dimensional space, represent a frontier in social computing with critical implications for business, education, social sciences, technological sciences, and our society at large. In this chapter, we first trace the history of virtual worlds back to its antecedents in electronic gaming and social computing. We then provide an overview of many leading virtual worlds, together with a taxonomy of virtual worlds, social computing, ...

Weblogs, or blogs are radically changing the face of communication within enterprises. While at the minimum blogs empower employees to publicly voice opinion and share expertise, collectively they improve collaboration and enable internal business intelligence. Though the power of blogs within organizations is well accepted, their properties, structure and utility has not yet been formally analyzed. In this paper, we study the use of blogs within a large corporation to reveal some of the interesting characteristics. ...
