This article presents the results of empirical research regarding Siberian regional identity with a particular focus on regional identity formation and transformation. Based on biographical interviews with residents of three Siberian cities, it analyzes the processes of regional identity formation in a “re-settlement” society and identity (re)construction under conditions of social crisis. In order to capture the individual dimension of such (trans)formation in a resettlement society the authors introduce and use a methodology combining the so-called “actionist” version of the social constructionist approach to identity studies and narrative analysis. The final section of this article offers a detailed analysis of the life stories of three Soviet-generation women, demonstrating different scenarios of regional identity transformation on the level of the individual. The results suggest that the effect of dramatic social change on personal identity depends upon the core identity of an individual. Those whose identity was rooted in the Soviet privileging of Siberian economic development face the hardest challenge. Those who have multiculturalism or such values as work or family at the core of their identities handle the crisis more easily, and the consequences of social transformation for their identities are less severe.

The paper considers the strategies and forms of international education programs realized by universities of Chita (Russia) and Almaty (Kazakhstan). We also consider how international cooperation programs are realized at the national level (a strategy for internationalization of higher education) and at universities (universities’ programs) by two leading universities (according to educational mobility indicators). We describe the strategy for internationalization of higher education being realized by Russia and Kazakhstan and key risks of their realization (brain drain, asymmetric flows of educational migration, and regional differentiation). We can conclude that regional differentiation should be necessarily taken into consideration in making decisions on the development of international education in Russia

The essay discusses the construction of Siberian regional identity through consumption with use of Siberian regional brands. Siberian identity is conceptualized as a dynamic phenomenon being actively formed through people’s activities at the territory of the region. Consumption is seen as one of the key sites and tools for this identity construction and also as a form of regional patriotism. The context of Siberian identity construction is analyzed, and the key distinction is drawn between cultural and socio-economic dimensions of the regional identity. Two successful regional brands, ‘I’m Siberian’ and ‘Monstratsiia’ [‘Monstration’], are analyzed to illustrate this distinction. The paper reflects on the tension between cultural and socio-economic dimensions of regional identity in consumption. It also argues that there are probably no apolitical forms of consumer mobilization around regional identity in today’s Russia.

This article discusses the life histories of former factory workers who had previously worked at those enterprises in an industrial town in Western Siberia upon which the settlement was founded. Having survived the crisis of the 1990’s, the town still depends upon them. Based on the analysis of semi-structured interviews with former factory workers, an analysis is presented as to how biographies are "split" into before and after the crisis and re-assembled into consistent stories of the self, or in P. Ricoeur’s understanding, narrative identities. The article also considers how these stories shape the scope and repertoire of "perceivedopportunities" today. Two contrasting examples of narrative identity formation, that of "sameness" and "selfhood" based on community and ethics, respectively, are discussed. The analysis shows how narrated self-perceptions, often individualized and past-oriented and rarely involving any positive agenda for the pr...

The concept of social identity is being reconsidered in the social sciences due to transformations undergone by (post)modern societies, such as globalization, localization, and the intensification of global migration. In this context, the Siberian identity (being “Sibiriak”) is an interesting object of research for it reflects the cultural, political, and economic effects of globalization and localization, as well as transformations in individual self-perception. This paper demonstrates that Siberian identity is not only a personal matter but also a new type of social solidarity and political claim. Using an actionist approach to identity studies, this article explores the core elements and “versions” of Siberian identity, the contexts of its formation and actualization, and regional variations in its manifestations. Two manifestations of Siberian identity—the “Siberian character” and the “Siberian civic nationhood”—are discussed, key dimensions of their actualization (territorial, ...

"The study of Siberian identity is becoming vital today due to the rising importance of regional self-consciousness in Russia in general and the Siberian region in particular. This is manifested through increasingly active attempts by people living in the Russian regions to make claims regarding their interests to the federal center and to attract attention to region-specifi c social and economic problems. One can also observe a rising interest in regional history and culture. Besides, the results of the latest all-Russia census revealed such manifestations of the regional selfconsciousness as new national self-identifi cations, including, among others, the “Siberian” one. In light of this emerging trend, the study of Siberian identity today is a socially significant project.
This article describes social identity as the product of social and political activity, as the interactive development of collective self-consciousness, solidarity, and group cohesion that are needed for any collective action. Social identity is understood both as a product of social and political activity and as the basis for further activities."

The paper analyzes consumption practices, which people attribute to markers of poverty and wealth, and the ways of how people build a system of social inequalities around such markers on the base of economic, social and moral criteria. We show that consumption operates not only as economic activity but mainly as socially meaningful and classifying practice; we also show how the difference in systems of «alternative inequalities» is rooted in different «modes of justification» based on different grounding values.
