Thesis Title: Careers and Labour Market Flexibility in Global Industries: The Case of Seafarers
The flexibilisation of labour in the global labour market has been a bone of contention among scholars from different disciplines over the past four decades. On the one hand, such employment is seen as a detrimental practice to employees, who might lose their occupational identity as well as constantly experience job insecurity and uncertainty. On the other hand, flexible employment is perceived as the pillar of freedom, enabling individuals to fulfil their potential through increasing labour market opportunities. In an attempt to assess these competing views within the context of a global industry where flexible employment is commonplace, the shipping industry has been chosen as the basis of an investigation to answer the following research questions:
1. To what extent are flexible employment arrangements perceived as beneficial to employers?
2. What are the perceived implications of flexible employment arrangements for employees?
3. What is the relationship between the flexibility of employment and the occupational identities of seafarers?
To answer these research questions, qualitative research methods were used to speak to over 70 participants. The methods included mostly semi-structured in-depth interviews and informal conversations conducted aboard a cargo ship.
The findings of the thesis can be largely divided into three main aspects. First, the thesis sheds light on the complexities of flexible employment in the shipping industry (i.e. the perceived negative and positive implications of such employment) for employers and employees. Secondly, using the shipping industry as an example, the thesis challenges current widespread views about the benefits of flexible employment to employers. Thirdly, the thesis presents the idea of a ‘double occupational identity’ to describe the often-complex occupational identity of seafarers related to differences in perceived labour market power.
Several strengths, limitations, and recommendations for policy and also for major stakeholders in the shipping industry are raised at the end of the thesis.

This development paper sets out the rationale for future empirical studies that focus on understanding the complexities associated with performance measurement within the NHS. It is intended that the study, which will focus on understanding exception congruence of service among the various NHS stakeholders, will eventually be based on data that are obtained from multiple exploratory interviews of NHS stakeholders involved with the delivery of NHS Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) in England.

This thesis explores the blurring lines between economic and social capital by scaffolding off of interdisciplinary scholarship to construct a quantitative and qualitative case study analysis of tweets from the 2020 Black Lives Matter movement. As a chosen “vehicle” or liminal site of study, Venmo’s social features may deem it a useful tool in supporting social, political, and economic movements by way of economic and social exchange, ultimately drawing a virtual connection between varying affinity spaces with a shared cause and blending lines between economic and social capital. Through an NVivo analysis of 92 tweets containing the search terms “Venmo” and “#BlackLivesMatter,” 21 cities were recognized, 44 unique hashtags were referenced, and 10 affinity spaces were identified which exemplified social capital as a central focus alongside the exchange of economic capital.

The current paper presents recommendations from the Task Force on Resources for the Publication of Qualitative Research of the Society for Qualitative Inquiry in Psychology , a section of Division 5 of the American Psychological Association. This initiative was a response to concerns by authors that reviews of qualitative research articles frequently utilize inflexible sets of procedures and provide contradictory feedback when evaluating acceptability. In response, the Task Force proposes the concept of methodological integrity and recommends its evaluation via its two composite processes: (a) fidelity to the subject matter, which is the process by which researchers develop and maintain allegiance to the phenomenon under study as it is conceived within their tradition of inquiry, and (b) utility in achieving research goals, which is the process by which researchers select procedures to generate insightful findings that usefully answer their research questions. Using a sample of 118 drug-involved women originally released from prison in the 1990s and re-interviewed between 2010 and 2011, this paper examines the role motherhood played in the desist-ance process from crime and substance abuse. Interview narratives revealed that motherhood rarely functioned as a turning point per se that activated desistance, but caring for children did serve to solidify prosocial identities once offenders had transformed their addict/criminal identities. Despite their identity transformations, however, the journey of desistance for the majority of mothers was still a long and arduous path. The reality for these mothers most often resembled a hostile terrain marked by the competing demands of battling addiction, finding employment and suitable housing with a criminal record, establishing visitation and custody rights in family court, and regaining the trust of children and family members who had long ago lost faith in their commitment to their families. This research illuminates the complexities inherent in the desistance process for a contemporary sample of drug involved adult women entrenched within the criminal justice system.

What is qualitative research? If we look for a precise definition of qualitative research, and specifically for one that addresses its distinctive feature of being Bqualitative,^ the literature is meager. In this article we systematically search, identify and analyze a sample of 89 sources using or attempting to define the term Bqualitative.^ Then, drawing on ideas we find scattered across existing work, and based on Becker’s classic study of marijuana consumption, we formulate and illustrate a definition that tries to capture its core elements.We define qualitative research as an iterative process in which improved understanding to the scientific community is achieved by making new significant distinctions resulting from getting closer to the phenomenon studied. This formulation is developed as a tool to help improve research designs while stressing that a qualitative dimension is present in quantitative work as well. Additionally, it can facilitate teaching, communication between researchers, diminish the gap between qualitative and quantitative researchers, help to address critiques of qualitative methods, and be used as a standard of evaluation of qualitative research.

The COVID-19 pandemic will not be easily forgotten as its contagious impact has penetrated education. In response to this, educational practices have moved online within various forms and terms, and Emergency Distance Education (EDE) is one of them. Within this frame, this qualitative study aimed to investigate the recommendations of 118 English Language Teaching (ELT) Department students for their teachers and for students themselves in developing four language skills-reading, writing, listening, and speaking-during EDE settings to improve the efficiency of the online courses. In doing so, Framework Method via NVivo 11 Plus was utilized. The participants' recommendations for EDE included a total of 152 comments for reading, 141 for writing, 131 for listening, and 147 for speaking skills. The participants' recommendations for four skills centered on a total of seven themes: for teachers, for students, for online platforms, for eliminating technical issues, satisfactory, no recommendation, and no answer. The data analysis demonstrated that the majority of the recommendations for each skill were given for teachers under two sub-themes: content and implementation. While content had the highest frequency for reading, writing, and listening skills, implementation was found to be the top concern for speaking skills. The results of the study presented valuable insights not only for ELT contexts but also for all language education settings.

This is a brief presentation given to graduate Social Work students from the University of Regina. The presentation concerns less about the process of coding as it does the issues associated with using Nvivo for qualitative research.  I address some preliminary issues of using the software, what Nvivo will and won't do for you, then provide some advice for approaching Nvivo in different ways (e.g., as a Project Manager).  Please note, there is a bibliography associated with this presentation for which I am happy to share upon request.

Qualitative research continues to grow around the world. More and more scholars and institutions of higher education continue to embrace it. Publications must continue to be on practical ways of conducting qualitative research in general and conducting it especially ethically. This paper is focused primarily on practical ways of enhancing ethical practices in qualitative research. While many qualitative research books and articles discuss ethical considerations, it is good to have a paper that synthesizes effective strategies to enhance ethics in a much more practical way. This paper goes from the definition of ethics to the importance of ethical practices and to the implementation of practical considerations before, during, and after data collection in qualitative research. This paper is not meant to be exhaustive; however, it should be a good guide for qualitative researchers who wish to avail of practical strategies for good ethical practices.

Purpose-The purpose of this paper is to understand the perception of the bankers towards an integrated approach to corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives in a strategic way of achieving sustainable growth of the banking sector. The paper additionally provides insights into different CSR initiatives and their implementation process in the context of scheduled commercial banks (SCB) of India. Design/methodology/approach-The study is exploratory and endorses the qualitative approach of primary research methodology by adopting a non-random stratified sampling method. The localist approach of the face-to-face interview has been applied to collect the data from 26 elite class respondents from 13 SCBs. The interview method was semi-structured and open-ended. The conformity, trustworthiness, credibility, transferability, dependability test of the study have ensured the quality of the data. Findings-The study reveals that the bankers perceive CSR as a moral obligation for the benefit of the society, beyond the regular banking operations. Further, the study comprehends that the CSR initiatives play a vital role in establishing the bank's image, brand and reputation, as well as, building a strong bond of trust among the employees and the bank management. Besides, CSR activities facilitate to cultivate a better culture by improvising in the quality of customer service for achieving competitive advantages. Research limitations/implications-The findings of the study represent a significant contribution to CSR theory from the interface of banking and society. Significantly, the results confirm that CSR initiatives play a vital role in building trust and minimise the gap between the employees and the management of the bank. The banks can increase its acceptance in the society and achieve competitive advantage by integrating CSR objectives with the business objectives to strengthen the corporate personality and brand. Practical implications-The study will help practitioners to develop the social identity of their firm to achieve competitive advantages in long-run. The bankers can channelise their limited resources while planning, designing and the implementation of different CSR activities with the overall goal of the bank in a cost-effective way. The study is confined only to public and private SCBs and limited to the geographical scope of one state in India. Therefore, further exploration may be carried out by considering other banks and geographic regions in India and different cross-cultural settings. Originality/value-The originality of the study lies with the in-depth analysis and quality check of the data. The results can contribute significant value to the qualitative method of conducting research.

This approach to evaluation encourages researchers and reviewers to shift from using standardized and decontextualized procedures as criteria for rigor toward assessing the underlying methodological bases for trustworthiness as they function within research projects.

Consequently, our world is exploding with data – text from interviews and FGDs transcripts, videos, social media and more. Making sense of it without the right research tools is like looking for a needle in a haystack. Training Methodology
The course is designed to be highly interactive, challenging and stimulating. This dissertation examines media representations of migrant sex labor of women former Soviet Union countries in Turkey. Treating mass media as an instrument of state hegemony and patriarchy, this study uses a Marxist feminist and historical materialist theoretical framework to examine media representations of migrant sex labor. The methodology applied in the study is conventional content analysis conducted with the help of NVivo 11 software and discourse analysis. In order to examine media representations of migrant sex labor in Turkey, a content analysis of 990 articles in five Turkish newspapers (Cumhuriyet, Hürriyet, Milliyet, Sabah and Zaman) is conducted for the period of 1992-2014. It is argued that the media as an ideological platform in which state hegemony is being reproduced was the most important factor shaping public opinion about the issue of migrant sex labor in Turkey starting from the 1990s. Discussing media representations of the issue and its key aspects such as supply and demand sides of migrant sex labor, the author examines the role of the media in facilitating exploitation of migrant women’s sexual labor as a problem of both capitalist and patriarchal exploitation. Critical discussion of the literature on the topic of the interaction between the media and the state, and literature on irregular migration and human trafficking of migrant women in Turkey is also provided in this study.

It is important for researchers to efficiently conduct quality literature studies. Hence, a structured and efficient approach is essential. We overview work that has demonstrated the potential for using software tools in literature reviews. We highlight the untapped opportunities in using an end-to-end tool-supported literature review methodology. Qualitative data-analysis tools such as NVivo are immensely useful as a means to analyze, synthesize, and write up literature reviews. In this paper, we describe how to organize and prepare papers for analysis and provide detailed guidelines for actually coding and analyzing papers, including detailed illustrative strategies to effectively write up and present the results. We present a detailed case study as an illustrative example of the proposed approach put into practice. We discuss the means, value, and also pitfalls of applying tool-supported literature review approaches. We contribute to the literature by proposing a four-phased tool-supported methodology that serves as best practice in conducting literature reviews in IS. By viewing the literature review process as a qualitative study and treating the literature as the " data set " , we address the complex puzzle of how best to extract relevant literature and justify its scope, relevance, and quality. We provide systematic guidelines for novice IS researchers seeking to conduct a robust literature review.

In a world where approximately two billion people speak English (Crystal, 2008), the demand for English language teaching continues to increase. Consequently, there is a growing need for educational fields such as Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) to respond to this demand by continuing to invest in the education of new and experienced teachers. It is also the goal of the profession to provide teacher educators with professional development opportunities which increase their knowledge of new methodologies for teaching TESOL and develop their educational skills for better preparing and supporting student teachers (Galaczi, Nye, Poulter, & Allen, 2018). Borg (2003) points out that mainstream educational research “has recognised the impact of teacher cognition on teachers’ professional lives, and this has generated a substantial body of research” (p.81). However, in the field of Second Language Teacher Education (SLTE), a dearth of research is particularly evident in the area of short teacher education courses for novice teachers of TESOL such as the British-administered Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA). Similarly, there are few studies which have explored the preparation of pronunciation teachers in SLTE (Baker, 2011; Burri, 2016; Couper, 2016, 2017, 2019, 2020). The aim of this thesis is, therefore, to bridge the divide between theory and practice by conducting a research inquiry that combines the examination of second language (L2) teachers’ cognitions (beliefs and knowledge) and the consensus of pronunciation experts (who are also teacher educators) on appropriate andragogical recommendations for pronunciation teaching in the CELTA. The construction of an andragogy was achieved through two qualitative case studies (Study One and Two) carried out using a virtual focus group and an online Delphi, respectively. The data were obtained using semi-structured interviews and online questionnaires. Study One was an exploratory case study with five English teachers from Australia and Study Two was a case study with 12 pronunciation experts from an international specialist group, the SUPRAS. The findings demonstrated that CELTA-trained teachers, and by proxy, CELTA tutors find it hard to part with their ab initio beliefs about pronunciation teaching. The findings also showed that CELTA tutors require continuing professional development program to become familiar with research-based, learner-centred and multisensory techniques.

Purpose — Qualitative research suffers from “contestation” and a lack of “boilerplate” problems to assessing and presenting qualitative data, which has hampered its development and the broader acceptance of qualitative research. This article addresses this gap by marrying the constructivist methodology and RQDA, a relatively new open-source computer assisted qualitative data analysis (CAQDAS)-based R extension and demonstrate how the software can increase the rigor, transparency, and validity of qualitative research.

Design/methodology/approach — This article highlights the constructivist approach as an important paradigm in qualitative research and demonstrates how it can be operationalized and enhanced using RQDA. It provides a technical and methodological review of RQDA, along with its main strengths and weaknesses, in relation two popular CAQDAS tools, ATLAS.ti and NVivo. Using samples of customer-generated e-complaints and e-praises in the electronics/computer sector, this article demonstrates the development of a process model of customer e-complaint rhetoric.

Findings — This article offers step-by-step instructions for installing RQDA, and using this software for data coding, aggregation, plotting, and theory building. It emphasizes the importance of techniques for sharing coding outputs among researchers and journal gatekeepers to better disseminate and share research findings. It also describes the authors’ use of RQDA in classrooms of undergraduates and graduate students.

Research limitations/implications — This article addresses the “contestation” and “boilerplate” gaps, offering practical, step-by-step instructions to operationalize and enhance the constructivist approach using the RQDA-based approach. This opens new opportunities for existing R users to “cross over” to analyzing textual data as well as for computer-savvy scholars, analysts and research students in academia and industry who wish to transition to CAQDAS-based qualitative research because RQDA is free and can leverage the strengths of the R computing platform.

Originality — This article offers the first published review and demonstration of the RQDA-based constructivist methodology that provide the processes needed to enhance the rigor, transparency, and validity of qualitative research. It demonstrates the systematic development of a data structure and a process model of customer e-complaint rhetoric using RQDA.

Recent updates in qualitative data analysis software have provided the qualitative researcher in professional communication with powerful tools to assist in the research process. In this tutorial, we provide a brief overview of what software choices are available and discuss features of NVivo, one prominent choice. We then use our experiences with the software to discuss how it has benefited our efficiency, multiplicity, and transparency. We end with a compilation of best practices for using the software.

As representatives of the government, U.S. politicians are tasked with inciting and sustaining the American people’s belief in the system. Their speeches work to reinforce the policy trajectories and ideologies that construct the political paradigms which may last, across presidencies, for decades. This thesis describes and analyses how Barack Obama utilized his presidency to sustain the last great political paradigm to grip America – that of the globalist ‘New World Order’ project (1990 – 2017) established in America under George H. W. Bush – and how he ultimately failed when Donald Trump successfully challenged this paradigm, most markedly within his 2016 presidential debate performance against opponent Hillary Clinton. Utilizing an innovative mixed-methods research design combining corpus linguistics and qualitative coding with argument reconstruction-based critical discourse analysis, this study employs advanced methods to illuminate the complex ways in which political rhetoric is used to sustain institutional power over extended periods of time. A new research approach, based on the analysis of complex argument trajectories through critical comparison and the identification of linguistic patterns, is additionally introduced and applied to examine longterm political policy trajectories as well as the conflicting mainstream and alternative media narratives currently being produced in reference to the political and economic sectors. The results of this study show that the Obama administration’s inability to produce an even economic recovery despite the doubling of the national debt, the failure of the Affordable Care Act and the White House’s covert funding of the Caliphate in Syria have resulted in a severe degree of corrosion in the population’s belief in institutional power, a decline that largely began under George W. Bush due to the fallout from the 2003 Iraq War and the 2007-2008 Great Recession. Largely as a result, a general paradigm shift has been triggered and is manifesting among the American people; this shift is now being narrated by a new alternative media sector – which includes ‘QAnon’ – which is introducing and promoting political, economic, and occult-based theories such as New World Order Theory, Deep State Theory and Global Oligarchy Theory, which heavily influenced Trump’s successful election campaign. This situation is having a profound effect on the nation as it additionally concerns a broader scientific shift out of the materialist construct of ‘reality’ which has defined the globalist model and into a quantum-based ontological construct; this new model broadly overlaps with the view of reality upheld within the spiritual and religious systems which have traditionally defined the belief structures of the American people. In short, the current political paradigm shift is a result of a greater consciousness shift unfolding within the United States today, and while a destabilizing time of transition, this is also a period of transformation and great hope.

Qualitative research is an ongoing disruptive innovation in educational research all around the world. For a century or more, the world has predominantly been under the dominion of quantitative research. In fact, when qualitative research was introduced a few decades ago, it met strong resistance and repugnance, just as is the case of any groundbreaking innovation. Today, this opposition to the different way of thinking that qualitative research promotes still exists in many countries around the world. One of the reasons why scholars resist qualitative research is that they simply do not know what it is and what makes a good qualitative research study. This paper uses leading qualitative research texts to propose a list of criteria to evaluate the quality of a qualitative research paper. En el marco de las modernas democracias, una de las partidas presupuestarias más amplias de las campañas electorales es la dedicada a la realización y producción de spots electorales. Igualmente, el empleo de estas piezas audiovisuales se ha generalizado hasta el punto de no haber campaña de relevancia que no desarrolle uno o varios spots tanto para televisión como para los nuevos medios digitales. El poder persuasivo de los anuncios descansa, en gran medida, en las estrategias discursivas del montaje audiovisual, que son, a su vez, herederas del cine de propaganda.
Se propone un método específico de análisis plano a plano, centrado en todos los elementos que toman partido en el engranaje de los montajes audiovisuales: desde la forma de la imagen hasta la retórica de la construcción audiovisual. Igualmente, se aporta una metodología concreta que permite el análisis comparativo de unos spots con otros, y de campañas completas unas con otras, independientemente del contexto geopolítico, en función de datos racionalizados estadísticamente. Un método, en suma, que busca aunar la especificidad del comentario de texto cinematográfico y del análisis retórico publicitario con las más avanzadas tecnologías informáticas.

2019 saw a series of far-right terrorist attacks, for example at Christchurch, Poway Synagogue and El Paso. Each was accompanied by a manifesto where the attacker sought to justify their actions, and rally further support.
Using NVivo software, this report analyses each of these documents, focusing on recurring themes and terms. The ideological diversity of the contemporary far-right clearly emerges, as well as more familiar and expected themes in terms of racism and neo-Nazism.  There is also a call to narrow the political space in which such actors seek to operate.

Se detallarán las distintas funciones del mismo y se hará hincapié en cómo el programa puede apoyar el desarrollo de proyectos de investigación cualitativa trabajando de forma individual o en grupo. El capítulo incluye un ejemplo práctico del uso de NVivo 10 para resolver un problema de investigación dentro del paradigma interpretativo-cualitativo.

This study applies Harvey and Green’s (1993) model of quality to scholarly knowledge production. Although studies of quality in higher education have been commonplace for decades, there is a gap in understanding quality in terms of research production from the stakeholder’s perspective. This study begins to fill that gap through a qualitative interview study of quality in the knowledge production process. Stakeholders in all parts of the scholarly knowledge production process, from 17 countries are included in the data sample. Interview data are analyzed through the conceptualizations of quality developed by Harvey and Green (1993), extending the use of the model into the realm of the knowledge production process. Definitions and challenges of quality in producing scholarly knowledge are discussed. The findings indicate a rift between the institutional view of quality and the individual perceptions of quality, suggesting the need for policies aimed at addressing a unification of scholarly knowledge production efforts.

This course aims to provide participants with the strategic understanding and applied skills in planning, conducting, and reporting findings from qualitative research. At the end of the course, participants will be able to plan, conduct, and critically assess the quality of the qualitative data gathered during their data collection process. Participants will also learn how to use NVivo 12 in Qualitative Data Analysis.

Training Methodology
The course is designed to be highly interactive, challenging and stimulating. It will be an instructor led training and will be delivered using a blended learning approach comprising of presentations, discussions, guided sessions of practical exercise, web based tutorials, group work and exploration of relevant issues. Our facilitators are seasoned industry experts with years of experience, working as professional and trainers in these fields. All facilitation and course materials will be offered in English.

Using a mixed-race sample of male and female drug-involved offenders who were released from prison in the early 1990s and re-interviewed in 2009 through 2011, this article represents perhaps the first attempt to determine the utility of the identity theory of desistance (ITD) in explaining desistance in a contemporary cohort of adult drug-involved offenders. Supporting the ITD, interview narratives revealed that the vast majority of offenders who successfully desisted from crime and substance misuse had first transformed their offender identity into a non-offender identity. Although partnership and employment did not appear to be significant turning points per se for the majority of our respondents, rekindling relationships with extended family and finding living-wage employment did serve to solidify new prosocial identities once the transformation had occurred.
