The prevention and treatment of the cancer using plants have attracted increasing interest. The present study was aimed to determine the phenolic compounds of Genista ferox using HPLC-TOF/MS and the anti-oxidant acti-vity associated with anti-cancer activity against human cervical adenocarcinoma (HeLa) cell line. Total anti-oxidant capacities of different extracts of G. ferox were assessed by DPPH assay, and their total phenolic and flavonoids contents measured by Folin–Ciocalteu and aluminum trichloride assays. The amounts of total phenolic (105.2 ± 0.6 – 308.5 ± 5.7 mg/g) of extract measured as gallic acid equivalent and flavonoids (8.1 ± 0.1 – 124.0 ± 0.7 mg/g) of extract measured as quercetin equivalent varied from chloroform to n-butanol extract of the two parts of the plant (leaf and stem). The ethyl acetate extract of G. ferox exhibited the most powerful effect on the DPPH scavenging activity with 94% from the leaf and 93% from the stem, while the chloroform extract from the ...

Origanum, widely used for food and pharmaceutical industry, belonging to the Lamiaceae family, is an aromatic and medicinal plant. The aerial parts of the Origanum onites L. were dried at shade and was extracted with methanol. Rosmarinic acid, gentisic acid, 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, protocatechuic acid, caffeic acid, vanillic acid, 4-hydroxylbenzaldehyde, p-cumaric acid, ferullic acid, apigenin-7-glucoside, and narigenin were found in O. onites methanol extract. Quantitative analyses of these compounds were determined by LC-TOF/MS and rosmarinic acid was the main constituent (32.05 mg/100 g dried plant). The essential oil was isolated by steam distillation and compounds were identified by GC-MS analysis. The essential oil included the carvacrol (88.71%) as a main product. p-Cymene (3.09%) was found as a second chief product. The essential oil exhibited excellent insecticidal activity on Sitophilus granaries and Sitophilus oryzae pests. However, methanol extract revealed the moderate a...

The current study is to determine variation in vitro antioxidant activities and chemical contents of different extraction solvents in aerial parts of wild M. longifolia subsp. typhoides var. typhoides taxons from Turkey. The chemical and volatile compounds of M. longifolia were investigated with HPLC-TOF/MS and GC/MS. The highest total phenolic and flavonoid contents were found as 28.27 and 25.42 mg from R6W, respectively. Hesperidin, neohesperidin, taxifolin, fumaric acid, chlorogenic acid, naringin, 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, caffeic acid, protocatechuic acid and syringic acid were determined in all extracts. The linalool, menthone, isomenthone, piperitoneoxide, pulegone, thymol, caryophyllene and caryophylleneoxide were major components in volatile compounds. The highest activities were observed significantly ( p < 0.01) from R6M, R6W, R10EA and R5M in total antioxidant, superoxide-scavenging, metal-chelating and inhibition of lipid peroxidation activities, respectively. The isola...

Context: Hertia cheirifolia L. (Asteraceae) is traditionally used in Northern Africa to treat various inflammatory infections. However, few studies on this plant have been reported. Objective: The anti-inflammatory activity of methanol extract of H. cheirifolia leaves was investigated using different experimental models. Materials and methods: Phytochemical analysis was performed to determine phenolic compounds. Acute toxicity of the extract (2000 mg/kg) was examined in Swiss albino mice for 14 days, before croton oil-induced ear oedema in mice, carrageenan-induced paw oedema in Swiss albino rats, cotton pellet-induced granuloma in rats and carrageenan-induced air pouch in mice were conducted. The IL-1β and TNF-α release from concanavalin A-stimulated monocytes was measured by ELISA. Results: Methanol extract of H. cheirifolia is rich in polyphenols and flavonoids. Cinnamic acid and rutin represent the major constituents. Methanol extract up to 2000 mg/kg did not produce any toxic e...

Background:: Luffa cylindrica is a plant that is widely distributed in Africa and Asia and it can be grown in regions with tropical or subtropical climates. Few patents dealt with Loofah biological properties, including some functional foods formulated from its leaves. Objective:: This study aimed to structurally and functionally characterize the bioactive compounds of L. cylindrica leaves grown in two different environments. Methods:: The extracts of L. cylindrica leaves collected from two Tunisian locations: Essouasi (LE), a semi-arid region and Medenine (LM) an arid region, were investigated for their phenolic compounds and fatty acids using HPLC/TOF-MS and GCMS techniques respectively. Furthermore, the antioxidant capacity was evaluated with DPPH, Chelating effect, Hydroxyl radical and Superoxide anion scavenging activities while the anticancer activity against HeLa cell lines was assessed using xCELLigence real time cell analyzer and lactate dehydrogenase cytotoxicity assay. Re...

Background: Pistacia atlantica Desf. (Anacardiaceae) has various applications for dietetic and medicinal purposes. Objective: The aim of the present study was to evaluate antioxidant, antiproliferative and anticholinesterase activities of different extracts from leaf and stem of Pistacia atlantica Desf. Methods: The antioxidant activity was performed by four methods: DPPH, ABTS, CUPRAC and reducing power assays. Anti-cholinesterase activity was performed against acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and Butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE) enzymes. Antiproliferative assays were investigated against HeLa cell lines using xCELLigence RTCA instrument. The secondary metabolites composition was established by HPLC-TOF/MS analysis. Results: In DPPH, reducing power and in ABTS .+ scavenging activity, all the extracts showed strong inhibitory activity compared to synthetic antioxidants such as butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) and butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), in which the activities were almost equal to the...

Background:Algeria has a particular geographical position with a wide band of very varied vegetation including the aromatic and medicinal plants. These plants are able to produce much diversified natural compounds, which can be very useful health care and treatment of diseases. Objective:This study was carried out to evaluate the antioxidant capacity and antibacterial activity of Anvillea radiata (Asteraceae) extracts, one of the medicinal plants used as food and in folk medicine in Algeria. Methods:The extraction was carried on the aerial part by methanol and water to give Met.E and Aq.E. The ABTS and DPPH free radicals-scavenging tests are used to evaluate the antioxidant activity of extracts. Moreover, the antibacterial activity was evaluated using disc diffusion method. Finally, the extracts were subject to the phytochemical analysis using the HPLC-TOF/MS equipment. Results:The Met.E showed the highest amount of total phenolic and flavonoids content (266.12 µg EAG/mg E and 50.83 µg...

The present work aimed to determine the antioxidant and antiproliferative potential of Luffa cylindrica fruits collected at two different maturation stages and to identify and compare their functional components composition. The methanolic extracts of L. cylindrica fruits harvested at 60 to 65 days after seeding (S1) and 85 to 90 days after seeding (S2) were investigated for their antioxidant activity using various assays. Furthermore, the antiproliferative activity of the extracts against HeLa human cervical cancer cells was explored with xCELLigence real time cell analyzer while the effect of the samples on the membrane integrity of the same cell line was assessed using LDH cytotoxicity leakage assay. Ultimately, the phytochemicals were analyzed using GCMS and HPLC/TOF-MS. The S1 sample had higher contents and more diversity in the phenolic compounds composition than S2. Furthermore, S1 extract showed the highest antioxidant and antiproliferative activity while S2 extract had high...
