Ensure the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all nations aim to the Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG) formed under the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The current United Nations (UN) report release stated that the UN targets all people to enjoy access to freshwater in its quality and quantity. Hence, achieving the goal is one of the significant challenges to all governments by 2030. In tandem with vast industrial development and an increase in its population, Malaysia is one of the developed countries facing water sufficiency issues regarding its quality and management. This study believes that poor water management, lack of public awareness, vast development, urbanisation, lack of integration, and a holistic approach are the leading causes of water quality depletion in Malaysia. Responding to the issues mentioned above, water sustainability approaches are believed to be one of the solutions to tackle the problems in this study. The data...

Physical development has significant effect on the microclimate. Understanding this relationship may contribute towards design improvement. For the context of hot-humid regions, not much research is being done on the impact of outdoor design and its microclimate on the indoor microclimate of a masjid. The aim of this research is to investigate the impact of outdoor design in shaping the outdoor microclimate, followed by their impact on the indoor microclimate of the main prayer hall where majority of masjid users occupy most of the time. Masjid Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah (Masjid SHAS) is surrounded by courtyards on the north, south, east and west, and these courtyards are further surrounded by buildings. The methods of this study consist of three parts, which the first part is field observation of the ground surfaces and architectural dimension. The second part is field measurement of several environmental data such as solar radiation, relative humidity, air temperature, wind direction,...

Character of city or urban area is important as it influences the perception of residents, visitors and business. Vibrant city provides a sense of arrival that introduces and highlights the city’s character, identity and capacity. However, uncontroll planning and development can contribute to the loss of character and identity, leaving the area unattractive and passive. The design seeks a solution to enhance the streetscape design and create public spaces along 500m from road junction (Jalan Raja Chulan and Jalan Sultan Ismail) towards the entrance of Bukit Nanas Reserve Forest, with bold and thematic design but without neglecting the value of local characters.

Communication is a fundamental part of the working environment that comprises interpersonal relations and communication between groups and individuals and other social interactions within the active community. Communication and soft skills have become an important issue due to the lack of study and development, especially in the Landscape Architectural practice. It can be seen that the lack of communication and soft skills by current graduates has affected employability leading to a large quantity of unemployment and lack of advancement within the landscape industry. Hence, to keep up with the current trends of what employers seek within these landscape architecture graduates, it is believed that a paradigm shift in the training of students must take into account the development of Communication Skills within the curriculum to help aid the development of graduate employability skills. A method of assessing communication skills is also required to rate a Landscape Architect’s level o...

Since the nineteenth century, the provision of parks has been a major focus in promoting places for relaxation and recreation. In other words, parks were designed to promote public health and to give some aesthetic value to an urban setting. Urban parks therefore can be regarded as open spaces, which cater to the needs of urban dwellers and the community as a whole. Here, urban open spaces are seen as the alternative venues for urban gateway. The fundamental focus of this paper is to provide an increasing understanding of the research, within the underlining value, belief, attitude and lifestyle of park user as well as to know how outdoor recreational activities in the Malaysian urban open space area are perceived. With urbanization and social demographic in mind, Malaysia has become an urban community which has led to realize the serious needs for urban open spaces. This paper will help to clarify the theory and literature part of the developing and managing process of urban open s...

The interpretation of gated community in Malaysia often been regarded as a residential community area equipped with human or electronic security surveillance. However, the true meaning is a community area enclosed by walls and fences, most of the time having controlled over the entrances especially for automobiles and pedestrians. It is an issue where the concept was only used for profit gaining and not looking at the holistic approach towards overall community planning and the landscape environment. This research will review the current practice of community planning in Malaysia and seek to establish any significant developments pertaining to planning implication and community landscape in the approaches used. The paper will appraise international and local case studies to compare the true meaning, theory and implementation of the term gated community. This research aims to contribute to emerging guidelines for gated community development in Malaysian.

The quality of life can be directly influenced by the quality of housing neighbourhood and green open space. Better quality of housing environment and green open space reflects the better quality of life of the residents. Thus, evaluation of both housing environment and green open space can help landscape architects and other related professions to understand people’s needs thus, provide a good living condition and public space to people. This paper is focussing to understand how the residents of Taman Melati perceived their quality of life through their housing environment and the availability of green open space. This research is seeking answers by assessing the quality of life based on three factors which are the safety level of the neighbourhood and park, health issues related to housing environment and park as well as the satisfaction on the housing amenities and park facilities. To carry out the research’s objectives, a case study area was selected at Taman Melati (Mastika), G...

Every successful housing space is fix upon its user satisfaction living in that space itself. The quality of house and the spaces within the unit can be said as the most compelling factors in scaling the user satisfaction in dwelling in the residential area that can lead to a better quality of life. Limitation of space following high land cost that affect the indoor and outdoor spaces needs to be studied as it affects the residents’ satisfaction. Hence, this study concentrates on spaces within a housing area and their quality, as well as the opinion of the residents and their level of satisfaction and space utilization. The focus of the study is on double-storey terraced houses because it is among the most common and dominant form of housing in Malaysia. The techniques employed in collecting data are observation and survey questionnaire with the respondent rate of 25.2%. This study provides an insight on the types of outdoor spaces (front yard-front lane and backyard-back lane) and t...

Preface The relationships between the natural and man-made environments are among the essential components in ensuring the sustainability of a region. The interactions and process across these components operate from the regional scale, to the city scale, down to how different users inhabit and utilise the spaces. Cities, Environment and Communities is a compendium of articles that collectively look into this dynamic relationship between the city, nature and people. This book is part of the collection of undergraduate and postgraduate seminar papers (Chapter 1 to Chapter 7) that were scientifically reviewed and presented in UMRAN 2012: Green Wave Seminar, held on 3 May 2012 at Kulliyyah of Architecture and Environmental Design, International Islamic University Malaysia. Following their nature and categories, the other part of the scientifically reviewed seminar papers are compiled in another book entitled “Sustainable Approaches in the Built Environment”. Malaysia and Singapore are the neighboring countries that emerged as the most developed countries in South East Asia. The development of thebuilt environment in the area of green building assessment tools had been emerging since the last decade. Green Mark had been established in the year 2005 and has been a benchmark for other tools in the region to be established. Green Building Index (GBI) of Malaysia was established in 2009 and since its inception had encouraged and urge the developers for practicing green building features in their business activities. One of the requirements in green building is applying the concept of green roof. Different tools give adifferent rating on the green roof concept thus giving many rating and level for a same building. This study evaluates the two tools available in South East Asia in term of points allocations and rating on green roof applications. GBI and Green Mark data points are taken and analyze for the points allocation for green roof. Relevant criteria and ratings awarded for green roof points are taken for weightage for green roof points allocations. Green Mark is founded to have awarded higher points for green roof application of 9.5% while GBI awarded 7%.

Of late it is noticeable that public spaces have considerably become a significant element in urban fabric as it relates very much with the quality of life of community. A meaningful planning and design of public spaces is crucial as it encourages positive activities for communities to make it more active and lively. Public spaces like parks, pocket gardens, outdoor seating and eating areas, and pedestrian malls are among the trend of this contemporary era among city dwellers globally. Unfortunately, most of the current ideas of planning and designing the public spaces are simply focused to provide spaces for people to do their leisure without respect to Islamic human moral and behavior. Thus, this paper addresses the importance of incorporating the element of as-tsaqafah (Islamic socialization) in planning public spaces. The Islamic perspective is far different from the Western adaptation and modernity style in the social activities. The issues of the right of women, children, fami...

Among ways to keep up with healthy lifestyle include physical activities. Recent statistics by the Ministry of Health (2016) indicated a drastic increase in the prevalence of non-communicable disease from 1990 to 2016 and the number is expected to increase or remain high. In response to the issue, the Eleventh Malaysia Plan 2016-2020 was formulated to improve Malaysians’ wellbeing by providing ample open spaces to encourage an active lifestyle. This paper aims to investigate the association of proximity to neighbourhood park and its level of utilisation. 680 respondents were involved in the questionnaire survey conducted at 7 selected neighbourhood parks. The output of the Pearson Correlation evinced that proximity to neeighborhood parks was highly associated to the level of park utilisation. There was a strong and positive relationships between (i) park distance and numbers of visitations (r = 0.841,n = 680,p = 0.000< 0.01), (ii) park distance and length of stay (r = 0.803, n = ...

Vegetation plays an important role in modifying the climate in urban areas. Apart from its function that is to provide shade, the absorption of high proportion of the solar radiation by the dark green leaves, the cooling effect from the evaporation of water from the leaves and the potential of reducing glare are among the roles of vegetation in modifying the microclimate. Not only providing the screening effect to reduce the solar penetration on the ground and walls, the existence of trees in clumps also has the potential in reducing the ambient temperature. However, the potential of trees in addressing the above mentioned functions are yet to be empirically investigated. This study is intended to investigate the aspect of trees: which are the trunk height, crown height, diameter of the canopy as well as the foliage density, and their effect in screening the solar radiation from penetrating and heating the ground. The data collection was done within the campus of the International I...

Many activities and strategies had been implemented to nurture reading habit among Malaysian citizens. In a bid to boost reading programs, the Malaysian Government has outlined several approaches that are hoping to expand the reading culture among the citizens. However, statistics revealed by the National Library that Malaysian read 8 to 12 books per year. Compared to our nearest neighbor, Singaporeans read 30 books per year .People in Britain and Japan read an average of 20 books per year. So this means that, in the reading level perspective, Malaysia is far behind developed countries in the world. Empirical studies found that teenagers are reading fewer books in general and reading is declining as an activity among teenagers and they had a bad impression towards the library. Consequently, the library is used by teenagers mainly to study or do homework rather than to borrow items to read at leisure. De Medina (1976) found that reading which is outside school hours occurred when the...

The fundamentals of urban open space management suggest that a thoughtfully implemented urban development should include more than just great buildings. It should include parks and open spaces because both buildings and open spaces benefit from each other through the quality of each space. Furthermore, it provides benefits from the economical, social, communal, environmental and aesthetical aspects. Parks and open spaces improved the quality of life of cities and neighbourhood by the city amenities and facilities. The conceptual framework on quality of a neighbourhood park in this paper is derived from a multidisciplinary study in the fields of landscape architecture, leisure, recreation, tourism and environment. This framework allows for theory-based consolidation of facts and ideas as well as practical implications for the development of tools to evaluate the aspects of quality in a Malaysian neighbourhood park. Neighbourhood park was chosen as the subject of assessment for this t...

The purpose of this research is to identify and understand vandalism issues that occur in the selected case study site as well as to determine characteristics of the surrounding landscape associated with vandalism hotspots, and to justify safe environments in park areas. Questionnaire survey was conducted and specifically studies an urban park in the city of Shah Alam in the state of Selangor, Malaysia. The research indicated that people perceived vandalism to occur because of the opportunities provided by the surroundings, user behaviour, lack of security and enforcement, lack of maintenance and inspection, location and design of the facilities, and the materials used for such facilities. This research is very important because there is no other known research about perceptions of vandalism from Malaysian local park visitors’ point of view, it should help planners, park designers and park managers in local or city councils in Malaysia, as well as the general public, to understand a...

Rapid urbanization has brought changes in life events that impact the psychological problem of mental health. The urban nature serves as a Psychological Restoration (PR) among affected people. Besides, closed attachment with nature leads somebody to react as pro-environmental. Despite many studies on nature and PR, hardly any studied in neuro-landscape (NL) intervene with pro-environment behaviour (PEB) on PR. Thus, this paper explores the potential of PEB to integrate on PR via a systematic mapping review with 23 articles. The book is a collection of selected case studies predominantly in Malaysia and an international case study in New Zealand that examines people’s experiences in public spaces.  The public spaces gathered in this book include street markets, parks, historical sites, open spaces, coastal areas and cities.  Written from the perspective of people’s experiences and responses towards the selected public spaces, the aim of the book is to share their narratives as users, as a way of guiding designers and planners how they might re-think about engaging with places and people.
