Abstract This chapter explores the past, present and future of tourism in the academy, starting with the early days but focusing particularly on what tourism has to offer in the modern academy. In doing so, it also reflects on the role of the academy in making a mark on the development of this major world activity. The chapter draws on a range of references including earlier work by the author, and it rests heavily on the experience of the UK.

Observing visitors' behaviour in places presenting heritage and reviewing the tourism literature dealing with ‘heritage’ tourism led to this research that is aimed at clarifying the core of heritage tourism. The common approach that heritage tourism consists of tourists in heritage places, is challenged. The relationship between four groups of variables (the tourists' personal characteristics, the tourists' awareness of the history of the site, the tourists' perception of a site in relation to their own heritage and, the site attributes) and the tourists' visitation patterns (before a visit, during a visit, and after a visit) as the outcome variables was investigated. The actual study was conducted in Israel because of its attributes as a space containing a variety of heritage sites in a relatively small area, which relate to different tourists on different grounds. The research looked in detail at two sites: the Wailing Wall and Massada. The results (specificall...

This paper reports on the findings of a study conducted by the University of Surrey for DIME, a project funded by the European Social fund (ESF). The purpose of the study was to investigate the owners' or managers' perceptions of Small and Medium Tourism and Hospitality Enterprises (SMTHEs) in UK regarding the impact of multimedia in the following aspects of employment: employment levels; nature and content of work as well as amount of workload; work satisfaction; skill requirements; and work status and remuneration. Overall 233 responses were received, broken down as follows: tourist information centres (n=151), 3* hotels (n=40), and B&B's (n=42). Research findings revealed that multimedia technologies are increasingly being adopted and used by tourism and hospitality businesses. The adoption is "system-wide" affecting the operations and competitiveness of all players. However, it appears that multimedia use has caused limited changes in the structure of organ...

This article examines the mindsets of independent Chinese tourists in the context of the emerging dynamic mobility perspective. It investigates Chinese tourists’ travel impulses, cross-border flows, quality-of-life perceptions, and the meaning of living a mobile lifestyle. Through face-to-face interviews and drawing on narrative descriptions in social media and newsletters, the article draws findings relating to travel motivations, the reconstruction of self, the quality-of-life mindsets, free-itinerary tour mode, and the influences of modern technology. The article aims at addressing the current development trends of Chinese outbound tourists, providing an understanding of the complex characteristics and the gradual release of Chinese outbound tourists’ cross-border mobility freedom.

Abstract Chinese outbound tourism has become of great interest to tourism scholars. This paper provides a brief review of the current theoretical discussion about modernity and alternative modernity and their connection to Chinese outbound tourism developments. The paper traces the progress of Chinese outbound tourism via the binary structure-agent approach. Its study integrates the institutional development of the Chinese tourism governing body over four decades as social structure, and as agents, analyzes the changing perceptions of Chinese outbound tourists. The study advocates that the Chinese outbound tourism sector has developed within the scope of alternative modernity. The paper indicates that the development of Chinese outbound tourism reflects a process of developing modern institutions and conceptual modernity over time.

In Australia, universities tend to take a theoretical approach to hospitality education, despite the calling from industry for graduates with both practical and theoretically grounded skill sets. While a considerable amount of research has investigated the hospitality industry's expectations of graduates, research regarding hospitality student expectations and their alignment with those of their future managers is limited. This study aims to address this gap by investigating current undergraduate student expectations of their hospitality degree programs looking specifically at their expectations towards the learning pedagogies, assessment techniques and curricula designed to provide them with the skills and knowledge their future employers seek.

The tourism and hospitality sectors have a number of characteristics, which mean that the development of information and communication technologies (ICT) as well as multimedia present some major opportunities yet at the same time bring some important challenges. There are great, even worldwide, space and time differences between the demand and the supply, the supply is highly perishable since lost sales are lost for ever, the supply consists of a great variety of products that cannot normally be inspected, seen or felt prior to purchase. All these mean that advanced reservations and the availability of up-to-date, accurate and accessible information as well as planned co-operation and collaboration between the different suppliers are indispensable operational activities for tourism businesses. As Buhalis (1997) has suggested: “information technology will be instrumental in the industries’ ability to enhance their future efficiency and strategic competitiveness”.
