A nyone interested in the world ofintelligence should read The 9/11 .r\investigations. It offers remarkable insight on the events of 11 September 2001, as well as the dynamics within the us intelligence community. The book is a compilation of statements, testimonies, and excerpts from inquiries, edited by Steven Strasser and introduced by Craig Whitney of the New YtJrk Times. It also contains a glossaryof terms, a select chronology ofterrorist attacks, and reproductions ofkey government documents, including the now-infamous 6 August 2001 presidential daily briefing entitled "Bin Laden determined to strike the US." Those anxious about combing through the official 585-page 9/11 Commission Report will welcome this volume for its clariry. Those interested in historical context will appreciate Whitney's deft analysis of the commission and its findings compared to congressional inquiries on Pearl Harbor, the assassination ofjohn F. Kennedy, Cuba, and Vietnam. Everyone worried about terrorism will be engrossed by the look inside the machinations ofnational security. Formally named the national commission on terrorist attacks upon the United States, the 9/11 commission was a bipartisan, independent

The Vietnam War era was without question the most significant period in the history of relations between the United States and Thailand. After World War II the two countries developed an extremely close relationship premised on containing the spread of communism in Southeast Asia. For Thailand, the US represented protection from the external threat of communist neighbors and the risk that an indigenous communist insurgency posed. For the US, Thailand represented a bastion of anti-communism in a region full of political uncertainty. It also represented a valuable Asian ally in the Cold War, a major "rest and relaxation" (R&R) destination for US servicemen in the region, a model of economic development in the so-called "Third World," and a strategic base from which to prosecute both overt and clandestine operations in Indochina. In fact, by the mid-1960s nearly 80 percent of all American bombing missions flown against North Vietnam and Laos were launched from air b...

This all-encompassing volume offers a comprehensive look at the contemporary culture that defines this Southeast Asian country of Laos, examining everything from Buddhist traditions to Laotian cuisine. Coverage includes a brief history of the nation followed by in-depth narrative chapters on religion, literature, visual and performing arts, fashion, gender roles, everyday social customs, and more. Ideal for high school students as well as general readers, Culture and Customs of Laos is a must-have for all library shelves. Among one of the most bombed co...
