Keywords: Italy Monte Poggiolo hominins magnetostratigraphy nannofossil biostratigraphy Pleistocene climate A candidate for the oldest human occupation site in Italy is Monte Poggiolo where the lithic tool-bearing levels are currently dated to ~ 1 Ma based on electron spin resonance (ESR). The low analytical precision of ± 30% at 2σ makes it unclear whether the date actually conicts with a recent reassessment of age constraints on key hominin sites from Italy, France, and Spain pointing to a uniformly young timing for the earliest habitation of southern Europe during the late Early Pleistocene climate transition within reverse magnetic polarity subchron C1r.1r (0.988–0.781 Ma). Our new magnetostratigraphic and biostratigraphic results show a sequence of stable normal and reverse polarities in a regional lithostratigraphic context that indicate the Monte Poggiolo tool-bearing site postdates the Jaramillo normal polarity subchron, most probably occurring at ~ 0.85 Ma immediately after the pronounced cooling that culminated with marine isotope stage 22 when the associated regression may have opened new migration routes through the Po Valley for large mammals and hominins.

ABSTRACT The site of Hmar Lakhdad is a vast prehistoric site of surface located in South-east Morocco. Within the framework of a scientific project of co-operation between Morocco and Italy, we carried out samplings of lithic material in order to specify the cultural caracteristics of industries and to estimate the potential of this site in term of scientific exploitation of the data. The techno-typological study of the material highlighted that the material, exclusively carried out on sandstone in plates present at the detrital state near the site, belongs to a Palaeolithic unit. Several flaking systems typicals of Paleolithic were identified. The great representativeness of the artifacts belonging to the first phases of the reduction sequence indicates that the prehistoric mens were installed on the site also because the raw material was avaibles there. The phases of transformation of the supports into tools are also represented primarily by scrapers and denticulated. However, materials attribuable to a recent period are observable on a significant number. Perhaps the exhaustive study of several series of artifacts taken in various points of the site would make possible to highlight a possible spatial organization with a specialization of the surfaces. This first approach confronts us, as it is always the case for the sites of surface of the Saharan areas, with the problems of integrity of the documents restored by these not very reliable sites and consequently with the character of information which they restore. Key words : South-east Morocco, techno-typological study, layer of surface.

Isernia La Pineta (south-central Italy, Molise) is one of the most important archaeological localities of the Middle Pleistocene in Western Europe. It is an extensive open-air site with abundant lithic industry and faunal remains distributed across four stratified archaeosurfaces that have been found in two sectors of the excavation (3c, 3a, 3s10 in sect. I; 3a in sect. II). The prehistoric attendance was close to a wet environment, with a series of small waterfalls and lakes associated to calcareous tufa deposits. An isolated human deciduous incisor (labelled IS42) was discovered in 2014 within the archaeological level 3 coll (overlying layer 3a) that, according to new 40Ar/39Ar measurements, is dated to about 583-561 ka, i.e. to the end of marine isotope stage (MIS) 15. Thus, the tooth is currently the oldest human fossil specimen in Italy; it is an important addition to the scanty European fossil record of the Middle Pleistocene, being associated with a lithic assemblage of local...

The systematic excavation of the site of Guado San Nicola (Monteroduni, Molise) revealed a stratigraphic sequence, more than two meters thick, located on the distal part of an ancient terraced alluvial cone made by the Lorda creek, a tributary of the Volturno river. The lithologic, morphographic and pedostratigraphic evidences suggest its attribution to an Interstadial of MIS6 or to MIS 72. The radiometric dating (40Ar/39Ar method and Electron Spin Resonance in combination with the uranium family disequilibrium method) reported an age between 350 and400.000 years, confirmed by a Late Galerian fauna and by the presence of Cervus elaphus acoronatus and Equus ferus ssp. The fauna assemblage, apart from these two taxa, is characterized by the presence of Ursus sp., Elephas sp., Stephanorhinus kirchbergensis, Bos primigenius e cf. Megacerinae, which denote a warm temperate dry climate. Paleontological remains are characterized by the presence of intentional fractures produced by human ac...

Current studies on the origin of language clearly show the necessity to go beyond the debate of nature vs. culture in order to pursue an interdisciplinary perspective. The convergence of researches carried out in different fields – neurobiology, palaeoanthropology and linguistics – outlines in a rather clear and convincing framework the strong link between language and motility. Various sources of

ABSTRACT Pirro Nord, located in Apricena, Southern Italy, represents one of the earliest records of hominin dispersal into Europe. The site is dated on a biochronological basis between 1.6 and 1.3 Ma and a significant vertebrate assemblage (Pirro Nord Faunal Unit) is associated with lithic artefacts which show many similarities with more or less contemporaneous lithic assemblages in Europe and with the African Mode 1. Since 2006, 340 artefacts have been found in the Pirro 13 fissure, and the lithic series is considered as a homogenous assemblage in terms of taphonomical, technological and raw material characteristics. Flint is the main raw material and the available and exploited flint cobbles and pebbles have different morphologies and sizes. The raw material has been collected in a secondary position near the actual location of the deposit. Two main reduction sequences have been performed by hominins in Pirro Nord: an “opportunistic” debitage, with multiple striking platforms in order to produce flakes of different morphologies including some “debordant” flakes and at least one cutting edge, and a “centripetal” or convergent debitage for the production of flakes with convergent cutting edges. The “opportunistic” approach has been adopted for the reduction of the largest flint cobbles and the polyhedral pebbles/cobbles. This method is considered as an adaptation to the raw material shape. The debitage is always made by direct percussion and hard hammer. Most of the cores are abandoned non-exhausted. In some rare cases, the use of flint pebbles of poor quality is also documented and seems to be the result of a very opportunistic and expeditious behaviour. Four flakes are retouched and are from an advanced phase of the debitage. The patterns from Pirro Nord fit well with the technological features provided by most of the European Mode 1 sites. Some peculiar features may be observed, possibly due to the main use of flint. The site with the highest similarities with Pirro Nord is Cà Belvedere di, possibly because the raw materials are ovoid flint pebbles. The lithic strategies at Pirro Nord are characterized, (1) by “opportunistic” and expedient behaviour adapted to the raw material constraints, suggested by the very short reduction sequences and by the non-exhaustion of the cores and, (2) by a series of products (pointed flakes) that appears to indicate a presumable intentionality.

Several faunal assemblages excavated in deposits of different antiquity (from Lower Paleolithic to Bronze Age), located in Northern, Central and Southern Italy, were studied from the archeozoological and taphonomic point of view. Data obtained by different Authors allow reconstruction of subsistence strategies adopted by prehistoric humans in these areas and through time, in particular as far as the exploitation of animal resources is concerned. The following assemblages were considered: Isernia La Pineta (Molise; Lower Paleolithic), Grotta Breuil (Latium; Middle Paleolithic), Grotta della Ghiacciaia (Verona; Middle Paleolithic), Riparo di Fumane and Riparo Tagliente (Verona; Middle and Upper Paleolithic), Riparo Mochi (Liguria; Upper Paleolithic), Grotta della Continenza (L'Aquila; Upper Paleolithic and Mesolithic), Grotta dell'Edera (Trieste; Mesolithic and Neolithic), Grotta della Cala at Marina di Camerota (Salerno; Eneolithic), Contraguda (Sassari; Neolithic), Castellar...

ABSTRACT Isernia La Pineta archaeological site in Central Italy, dated to about 0.6 Ma, is one of the earliest archaeological sites of the Italian peninsula and one of the key sites for the knowledge of human behaviour during the early Middle Pleistocene in Western Europe. Several archaeostratigraphic units have been recognized and systematically excavated. Core and flake assemblages were studied as a bulk in the Eighties of last century with a typo-metrical approach, not taking into account a precise stratigraphic provenance. Here we present a review of the lithic collection from the lowermost archaeostratigraphic unit (t.3c) which is the first techno-economic analysis based on the concept of chaîne opératoire. Our results contrast with those from previous studies. Our analysis demonstrates that the technical criteria employed in small débitage are not opportunistic and unstructured as previously inferred. By contrast, they correspond to well-established mental templates that led knappers (1) to use mainly a discoid method; (2) to apply this débitage method regardless of the size and shape of the original matrix; (2) to maintain a high productivity; and (3) to produce medium-sized flakes to be turned into small tools. The new data are discussed in the framework of the Lower/early Middle Pleistocene technological complexes of Western Europe, calling into question a number of allegations about the first technical traditions that have been previously accepted without reservation.

The Amane Oukider site (Tinghir, Anti-Atlas) was discovered by an Italo-Moroccan field crew during an archeological mapping project in South-East Morocco. It is an open-air site located near a outcrop of raw materials composed of dolerite. The only debitage method in evidence is the Levallois (lineal and recurrent centripetal) method; the plein débitage products were systematically exported from the site. The Levallois preferential flakes are characterized by a very high level of standardization and they were probably used as ...
