forwarders, structural equation modeling. This study empirically identifies customer relationship man-agement (CRM) and examines its impacts on firm perform-ance in the context of freight forwarder services. Using data collected from a survey of 144 freight forwarding firms in Taiwan, a structural equation modeling exercise was con-ducted to identify crucial CRM dimensions and their influ-ences on the perceived financial performance. Results indi-cated that CRM dimensions such as customer response and profit interaction are found to have significantly positive ef-fects on the perceived financial performance aspects of profit and growth rate. This research not only investigates crucial CRM but also proposes a model for empirical studies to link CRM and firm performance. To the best of our knowledge, this study is one of the first to examine CRM in the freight forwarder services. The model may be used as a stepping stone for empirical research in transportation services on CRM. The un...

This chapter empirically identifies the crucial criteria for choosing a business model of container terminal operations from the viewpoint of the Taiwan International Ports Corporation (TIPC)—the former port authority of Kaohsiung, Keelung, Taichung, and Hualien in Taiwan. An analytic hierarchy process approach is employed to assess the relative importance of these criteria and business models. Results indicate that benefit and operational capability are the two most important criteria for selecting business models of container terminal operations. The optimal business model in the short to medium term for TIPC is “wholly-owned, operate-outsourced”, whereas “wholly-owned, operate-owned” is the optimal business model in the long term. Implications of the research findings for port corporations and global terminal operators are discussed.

ABSTRACT This study empirically examines the relationships between internal green practices, external green integration, green performance, and firm competitiveness in the container shipping context. We collect data from a survey of 163 container shipping firms in Taiwan, and apply a structural equation model (SEM) to test the research hypotheses. We confirm that internal green practices and external green collaboration have positive impacts on green performance, which in turn helps to enhance firm competitiveness. The findings show that a firm’s green performance and external green collaboration act as mediator variables between internal green practices and firm competitiveness, and they influence firm competitiveness positively. We also discuss in this paper the managerial implications for container shipping firms to improve their green performance and competitiveness.

This study, based on a survey of 246 liner shipping companies in Taiwan, uses structural equation modelling to examine the relationships among corporate social responsibility (CSR), corporate reputation, and organisational performance. Confirmatory factor analysis is conducted to identify three critical CSR dimensions, namely, environmental responsibility, social responsibility, and economic responsibility. The results indicate that environmental responsibility, social responsibility, and economic responsibility each indirectly and positively influence organisational performance through corporate reputation. Accordingly, this study suggests that liner shipping managers could enhance their CSR to improve their corporate reputation, and organisational performance. The theoretical and practical implications of the findings for liner shipping firms are also discussed.

The oceans and coastal areas are facing a greater array of problems and dangers than ever before. Coastal zones represent roughly 20% of the total land surface, yet over 50% of the human population lives within 200 km of the coast. The average human population density in coastal areas, which is about 80 per km, is twice the global average (Chua 2006). Seven of the ten larger cities in the world, with a population of more than 8 million, are located in the coastal areas. With over half of the world’s population living along coastal areas, there has been unprecedented commercial and residential overdevelopment. The impact of climate change in coastal areas is associated with increased flood risk from rivers, in places exacerbated by sea-level rise. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) estimates that globally, the average sea-level has risen by about 150 mm during the past century, and it will further rise by 180–590 mm in the next 100 years (IPCC 2007). Safety and security of human activities along the coastal areas and at sea continue to be threatened by human activities, as well as by natural and man-made disasters. To ensure the safety in shipping and to avert disasters at sea, there is a need for close adherence to international conventions, regulations, codes and protocols. Also, there is a need for comprehensive emergency response plans and management and safety procedures that will minimize the environmental risks of any accident or natural disaster. The governance of the marine environment has evolved from being primarily top down and state directed to being more enterprise participatory and community based in order to deal with the issues of climate change. The United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development of June 2012 (Rio 20+) was an historic opportunity and milestone for pathways to a safer, more equitable, cleaner, greener and more prosperous world for all. Important and significant changes have taken place in marine environmental governance and green shipping preand post-Rio 20+.

In this paper, we examine the impact of customer relationship management (CRM) on firm performance using a hierarchical construct model. Following the resource-based view of the firm, strategic CRM is conceptualized as an endogenously determined function of the organization's ability to harness and orchestrate lower-order capabilities that comprise physical assets, such as IT infrastructure, and organizational capabilities, such as human analytics (HA) and business architecture (BA). Our results reveal a positive and significant path between a superior CRM capability and firm performance. In turn, superior CRM capability is positively associated with HA and BA. However, our results suggest that the impact of IT infrastructure on superior CRM capability is indirect and fully mediated by HA and BA. We also find that CRM initiatives jointly emphasizing customer intimacy and cost reduction outperform those taking a less balanced approach. Overall, this paper helps explain why some C...

ABSTRACT This study empirically examined the effects of tacit knowledge and transaction cost on knowledge transfer, and transaction cost as a mediator of the relationship between tacit knowledge and knowledge transfer in the port context. Using data collected from a survey of 233 employees in the Keelung Port Corporation in Taiwan, structural equation modelling (SEM) was employed to test the research hypotheses. The research findings indicated that port employees' perceptions of tacit knowledge and transaction cost negatively influence knowledge transfer, and tacit knowledge positively impacts on transaction cost. The findings also showed that an employee's perception of transaction cost mediates the relationship between tacit knowledge and knowledge transfer. The implications of the study findings for knowledge transfer in port operations are discussed.

ABSTRACT This study examined ethical leadership and ethical climate in the container shipping context. Using data collected from 147 container shipping firms in Taiwan, exploratory factor analysis identified four dimensions underlying ethical climate attributes: rules, independent thinking, law and ethical code, and caring. Subsequent analysis indicated that respondent perceived the law and ethical code dimension to be performed higher than the rules, caring, and independent thinking dimensions in their employing organisations. A structural equation model was employed to examine the relationship between ethical leadership and ethical climate, and indicated that ethical leadership has a positive influence on ethical climate. Areas suggested for future research are presented in the final section of the paper.

ABSTRACT This study empirically investigates factors influencing ocean carriers' use intention toward a port logistics information system (PLIS). Data collected from a survey of carriers in Taiwan were used to test a structural equation model examining the relationships among top management support, cost of adoption, perceived benefit, perceived complexity, security concern, and use intention. The results indicate that top management support, cost of adoption, perceived benefits, and perceived complexity are the dominant factors explaining the use intention of PLIS by carriers. However, the influence of security concerns on use intention was not shown to be significant in this study. Theoretical and managerial implications of the research findings are discussed.
