Richard C. Bush's Hong Kong in the shadow of China: Living with the Leviathan (2016) represents an important study on post-"Handover" Hong Kong focusing on the making of the 2014 Occupy Campaign and Umbrella Movement and the impact on the coming development in politics, governance and economy of Hong Kong, taking into consideration China's Hong Kong policy and the response of the Hong Kong people as well as the perspectives ofTaiwan and the United States. Through historical investigation and archaeological excavation, the
Suikunto Port in Mattaw, Tainan, has been proven to be the last remaining relic
of the interior ports of the Qing dynasty in Taiwan. This inland Mattaw Street
area, near the Tohong sea, became the location for the settlement of the
Mattaw people. Prior to the seventeenth century, the people of Mattaw were
the strongest tribe of the southwest plains; until the beginning of the Qing
empire, they enjoyed superior status, and greatly influenced trade activity in
the port. The people of Mattaw began to be􀅆civilized􀅇under Dutch rule; historical
records describe obvious differences between the former and the Pinpu
people of North-Central Taiwan, such that the Mattaw tribe began purchasing
land from the Han Chinese in a phenomenon termed"reverse handling."
However, after the rise of the Qianlong emperor, the Mattaw people were
incapable of resisting national policy and the invasion of Han Chinese cultural
influence, and were thus either assimilated or relocated to other areas. When
relocated to Mattaw Street or nearby Shuikutou, this became the new commercial
center. The changes of Mattaw Port Street, though influenced by the surrounding
environment and the Han Chinese, were also the result of the intrinsic
influence of betel nut residences. Together, these factors spurred the creation of not only the developed village structural model of twelve blocks seen
today, but one of Taiwan’s few, large-scale commercial-rural compound villages.

Right ventricular (RV) function has been found to be a major factor of exercise capacity in patients with heart failure. However, the role of RV function in exercise capacity in healthy subjects has not been well studied. This study aims to validate the role of RV strain derived from speckle tracking echocardiography for exercise capacity for health check-up subjects. This study prospectively recruited subjects from a routine health examination. All of them were symptom free. RV function represented by RV strain was derived from speckle tracking echocardiography in addition to traditional echocardiography parameters. Functional capacity was determined by a symptom limited treadmill exercise test with the Bruce protocol. More than 8,300 km separate Taiwan and Israel, but there are nevertheless important connections between the two small countries. They do not officially recognize each other, but over the past two and a half decades, they have found ways to collaborate.

In the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s, many of the overseas American Cultural Centers or binational centers sponsored or supported by the U.S. Information Service (USIS) organized annual Gettysburg Address speech contests.  The contests helped local students develop speaking and oratorical skills while they learned about the U.S. war over slavery and "government of the people, by the people, for the people."  "A speech or essay contest . . . may encourage hundreds of students to strive for the prize.  Win or lose, every contestant benefits from the effort."  Includes recollections from Bangladesh, Nigeria, Taiwan, and China.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB)/polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDF) are known to affect central nervous functioning. In recent studies, elderly patients who have been exposed to these have been noted to have psychological deficits. There is little known about which test is sensitive to neurotoxins in cognitive evaluation. The objective of the present study was to compare the significance between selective psychological tests in cognitive assessment in PCB-laden elderly. A retrospective PCB/PCDF exposed cohort was observed. Exposed elderly aged ≥ 60 years and registered in Central Health Administration were enrolled, and similar age- and sex-matched subjects served as non-exposed controls. Abstract Here we report the first molecular data on an invasive Sinanodonta woodiana ( Lea, 1834 ) (Bivalvia: Unionidae) population from Lesser Sundas (Flores Island, Indonesia). The DNA barcoding reveals that this population belongs to a mitochondrial lineage that is widely distributed across Malaysia. The mean COI p -distance between this ‘tropical’ lineage and invasive European populations is 5.3 ± 1.0% which clearly corresponds to the interspecific difference. The representatives of such a ‘tropical’ lineage have likely invaded other Indonesian islands together with the introduction of their host fish species, because our sequenced specimens were taken from a population on the southeastern edge of the current Sinanodonta distribution. The molecular identification of invasive populations of the Chinese pond mussels using available online databases such as the BOLD IDS and NCBI&#39;s Genbank is doubtful, because there are at least seven distinct mitochondrial lineages, hence each of them could belong to a separate cryptic taxon.

To identify characteristics of certifying physicians and the deceased that are associated with errors in death certificate completion in Taiwan, we retrospectively reviewed 4123 systematically sampled death certificates issued in 1994. Multivariate analyses were used to assess the associations of various characteristics of the certifying physicians and the deceased with four types of error. Of the 4123 death certificates reviewed, 2525 (61%) were completed correctly. In 289 (7%), only the mechanism(s) of death was given (Major Error 1); in 146 (4%), multiple causal sequences were given in part I (Major Error 2); in 800 (19%), a single causal sequence was given but was not specific enough (Minor Error 1); and in 363 (9%), a single causal sequence was given but the order was incorrect (Minor Error 2). Multiple logistic regression analyses revealed that the probability of error in death certification increased as the age of the deceased increased, the age of the certifier decreased, and the level of the hospital decreased. These findings suggest that training in death certificate completion should focus on younger certifiers and those working at lower level teaching hospitals and nonteaching hospitals. Given the high rate of Minor Error 1, physicians should be reminded to state information as specifically as possible to render cause-of-death statistics more informative.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of an educational program with interactive videodisc systems (IVS) in improving affective dispositions toward critical thinking for RN-BSN students in Taiwan. Leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) has been closely related to health improvement. The under-appreciation for energy output by nutritionists stems in part from limited data expressed in caloric equivalent. We converted the frequency, duration, and intensity of LTPA, reported from 15,390 adults in the Taiwan National Health Interview Survey 2001, into kilocalories (kcal). Half of Taiwanese adults admit to no LTPA. Women, lower education or income, younger age, smokers and chewers of betel quid; exercised significantly less than their counterparts. Less than 1/5 (18.9%) of the population in Taiwan was physically active at &gt;or=750 kcal/week, and only 1/7 (13.9%) reached a more desirable goal of &gt;or=1,000 kcal/week, compared with 1/3 in the U.S. The most disconcerting finding was the Taiwan unique U-shaped prevalence for males, with the 25-44 age group being the least active, &gt;or=65 age group being the most active; and S-shaped for females, lowest at age 18-24 years and high...
