Background. The ceramics industry produces porcelain pastes using a controlled ratio of water and porcelain powder. Two methods are used to produce a dental porcelain paste: one-step mixing or incremental mixing. Objective. To evaluate the optical properties of a feldspathic dental ceramic using two different ceramic paste preparation methods using a Bayesian approach. Materials and Methods. Two groups of feldspathic porcelain discs, an incremental mixing group (n = 40) and a one-step mixing group (n = 40), were assessed. Groups were evaluated using spectrophotometry, and the translucency parameter (TP) of each sample was calculated. Surfaces were characterized by AFM and SEM. Statistical analysis was performed using a Bayesian approach. Results. Translucency parameter values of the incremental mixing group ranged from 1.65 to 3.41, while values for the one-step mixing group ranged from 3.62 to 5.74, this difference being statistically significant. The lowest roughness was obtained ...

The goal of this study was to compare two methods of analysis, the use of force platform and based on video system, to investigate the postural control of young adults during upright stance on three bases of support. Fifteen young adults (30±4.96 years old) were asked to maintain an upright and quiet stance on a force platform for 30 s on bipedal, semi-tandem stance, and reduced bipedal bases of support. One reflective marker was placed on their back to acquire the space coordinates. Mean sway amplitude and mean velocity in anterior-posterior (AP) and medial-lateral (ML) directions and the area of stabilogram were calculated and used to compare the two methods of analysis and the effects of bases of support. Coefficient of correlation values indicated strong relation between trajectories of center of pressure and reflective marker in both directions (AP and ML), and statistical analysis of both methods indicated similar results in terms of effects of base of support. According to th...

Theobroma cacao L. is a tropical tree originating in the Amazon, where it grows naturally in the shade of tropical rainforests. Cacao sub-products, such as butter and powder, are produced as principal components of chocolate and contain important nutritional compounds such as polyphenols and flavonoids. However, bean production is decreasing because plantations are antiquated and unproductive. Cacao propagation has been traditionally performed through classical propagation methods, such as grafting or rooted cuttings, but those methods are not sufficient to obtain large quantities of planting material with the desired genetic quality and optimal plant health. In the search for solutions to this problem, somatic embryogenesis (SE) is a vegetative method used for cacao propagation that has the potential to be explored. SE is a type of clonal propagation by which totipotent cells in the somatic tissue can develop into embryos and subsequently convert into plants. This method offers sign...

Oxidative stress and hypogonadism are linked to the increased incidence of cardiovascular disease in males. The objective of this research was to delineate whether drinking cranberry juice for 4 months affects antioxidant capacity and lipid profile in orchidectomized rats. Thirty-two 1-year-old male rats were randomized to two groups: a sham-control group (n = 8) and an orchidectomized group (n = 24). The orchidectomized group was divided into three groups of eight and assigned to one of the following treatments: orchidectomy, orchidectomy plus 27% cranberry juice, and orchidectomy plus 45% cranberry juice. At 120 days after initiation of the study, all rats were killed, blood was collected, and plasma was harvested for total antioxidant status, malondialdehyde, nitrate + nitrite, and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity in liver, and concentrations of cholesterol and triglyceride in liver and in plasma. Orchidectomy depressed (P < .05) plasma antioxidant capacity and SOD activity...

Vitamin E is known to improve antioxidant status and to prevent lipoprotein oxidation. However, the effect of vitamin E on other cardiovascular risk factors, including C-reactive protein (CRP) and lipid profile status, in orchiectomized rats is unknown. In the present study, 32 1-year-old male rats were randomized into two groups: a sham-control group (n = 8) and an orchiectomized group (n = 24). The orchiectomized group was divided into three groups of eight and assigned to one of the following treatments: orchiectomy (ORX), ORX + vitamin E mixture (65.6 mg/kg) diet, or ORX + vitamin E mixture (656 mg/kg) diet. For 120 days all four groups consumed a basal AIN-93M diet, while the vitamin E groups ate diets containing an additional vitamin E mixture. Four months after the study began, all the rats were killed, the blood was collected, and the plasma was assayed for antioxidant status, CRP, lipid profile, and indices of peroxidation. ORX decreased (P < .05) the plasma antioxidant ...

The clinicopathologic features of three examples of mesenchymal hamartoma of the chest wall are described. The entity has been recorded under a number of names including osteochondroma, osteochondrosarcoma, benign chondroblastoma, mesenchymoma, and chondromatous hamartoma. The condition is manifest at birth or shortly thereafter with deformity of the chest wall and respiratory distress. Radiographic examination reveals a well-defined, partly calcified mass involving one or more ribs. The tumor is composed predominantly of chondroid tissue with large endothelium-lined blood spaces and immature mesenchyme with osteoclastic giant cells and osteoid. We review the literature and suggest that the lesion should be distinguished from aneurysmal bone cyst, chondroma, and other mesenchymal neoplasms. In order to avoid local recurrence the recommended treatment is complete surgical resection.
