The aim of this study was to assess the nutritional status and the association of excess body weight (EBW) with gender and age among children and adolescents from the town of Vilhena, Rondonia, Brazil. A total of 5,883 students, including children (6 to 11 years) and adolescents (12 to 17 years), from public schools participated in the study. Body weight and height were measured and the body mass index was calculated for subsequent classification of nutritional status. The t-test was used for comparison between genders and the chi-square test and Poisson regression were used to evaluate the association between EBW, gender, and age. Data were analyzed with the SPSS 11.0 program at a level of significance of p < 0.05. The prevalence of EBW was 19.3% among children and 17.4% among adolescents. EBW was significantly associated with gender and age among children. In addition, the prevalence of EBW was higher among girls (PR = 1.81, 95% CI 1.49 to 2.21) than among boys. Adolescent girl...

INTRODUCTION The obesity is a theme studied by several professionals in the health area and it has a classica1 definition "disease in which the excess of corporal fat is so accumulated that the health can be affected". The obesity is not a recent phenomenon, 2-3 however its prevalence had never reached epidemic proportions as nowadays . In this sense, it seems to be an ascension tendency in the prevalences of weight excess (overweight and obesity) either in the developed countries, or in those in development. It was observed in Italy, a prevalence of excessive corporal weight among 4 5 children from 3 to 17,5 years around 13,25% , but in Califórnia that prevalence arrives to 22,45% in children with ages between 6 and 13 years. In Brazil the situation is not very different. Studies accomplished in different Brazilian areas detected the following 6 prevalences of excess of corporal weight: Feira de Santana BA, 6,85% (five to nine years old) ; Rio de Janeiro, 11,72% (four to ...

This study aims to validate the psychometric properties of the Brazilian version of the Exercise Motivations Inventory (EMI-2). The original version was translated into Portuguese and back-translated into English. After minor changes identified in the translation process, the Portuguese version of the EMI-2 showed semantic, idiomatic, cultural and conceptual equivalences. The final version of the translated EMI-2 was administered in sample of 2380 university of both sexes to identify the psychometric properties. The adequacy of the translated version with 44 items distributed among 10 factors was tested, and construct confirmatory validity for the selected sample was assumed. The results showed Cronbach's alpha coefficient acceptable (.738 to .918) and 78.4% of items had substantial kappa index of agreement (> 61%) when the application of the questionnaire was repeated. In conclusion, the translation, cross-cultural adaptation and psychometric qualities of the EMI-2 were sati...

Introduction: Quality of life (QOL) may refer to a conceptual and quite complex discussion due to specifc defnition lack and poor procedures and instruments able to measure it. In this study, QOL’s instrument validation is based upon stressor and stress triggering agents. Foreign instruments may not always reach their goals as Brazilian and Latin American cultural differences shall compromise the data quality. In Brazil, questionnaires assessing organizational environment stress are scarce and often not validated. Objective : to demonstrate the construction and validation of an easy to apply instrument gathering stress and QOL. As a question problem, it was asked: What steps are to be followed for the construction and validation of an instrument? Methods: A 25 questions instrument was divided into four areas: Work environment; social relations; leisure; sleep. Six steps for instrument validation were followed: 1- Content Validity (or construct); 2- Internal Consistency; 3- Discrimin...

1 Abstract - The aim of this study was to assess the validity and reproducibility of a self- report questionnaire on sedentary behavior (Adolescent Sedentary Activity Questionnaire: ASAQ) among Brazilian adolescents. The sample consisted of 122 adolescents (62 females) aged between 12 and 17 years. ASAQ was developed and validated for adolescents in Aus- tralia (Hardy et al, 2007), and for its use in Brazil a transcultural adaptation to Portuguese was done, followed by an assessment of ASAQ's contents by experts. Then, ASAQ was administered within schools, on a typical school day, followed by a retest administration four days later. Total sedentary time was calculated for weekdays and weekends. Intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) and confidence interval (CI95%) were calculated for both sexes. QASA (acronym for ASAQ Portuguese version) has 13 questions divided into five categories: screen recreation, educational, transportation, cultural activities, and social activities. I...

The obesity it's a degenerative chronic disease characterized by the excessive body fat mass and is associated with genetics and environmental factors. The aim of the study is to investigate the evidences presented in the literature about the role of the macro and micro environments in the obesity epidemic's actual context. For doing this review, published articles from 1989 to 2008 were studied, using electronic databases, national and international publications, which ones were talking about the following themes: overweight and obesity, and inter-relation between the macro and micro environment and childhood obesity prevalence. Confronting the evidences, to investigate the obesity it's necessary to go beyond the simple detection of prevalences. It's necessary to identify which are the principal factors that affect the obese subjects and propose some intervention models, especially in children and young people, before 10 years of age.

INTRODUCTION Evidence of the validity of instruments for assessing health-related quality of life (QOL) are fundamental to grant interpretations and direct actions at the level of promotion and health care. PURPOSE To verify the agreement and reproducibility of the QOL assessment instruments WHOQOL-Bref and WHOQOL-Old, in paper (PV) and electronic version (EV), called WHOQOL-Bref web and WHOQOL-Old web, respectively. SUBJECTS AND METHOD A cross-sectional study was performed with 98 elderly people, separated into two groups, from Tapejara-RS, Brazil, during 2016 and 2017. The WHOQOL-bref and WHOQOL-old instruments applied in the PV and EV were answered individually. RESULTS The Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) observed in the accordance and reproducibility of the overall WHOQOL-Bref and WHOQOL-Old scores were higher than 0.90, respectively. The ICC was higher than 0.80 for most of the WHOQOL-Bref and WHOQOL domains, except for the domains Physical (WHOQOL-Bref: ICC = 0.67) and Autonomy (WHOQOL-Old: ICC = 0.78). CONCLUSION The web versions of the WHOQOL-bref and WHOQOL-old questionnaires presented good evidence of accordance and reproducibility.

INTRODUCTION: The obesity is defined, according to OMS (1995), as: “a disease in which the excess of corporal fat is so accumulated that the health can be affected”. OBJECTIVE: To describe the evolution of the epidemic of the obesity in children and adolescents and the prescription of physical exercises with safety and efficiency. METHODS: Systematic revision of the literature, accomplished by bases of electronic data (Medline/PubMed, Lilacs, Ovid, Science Direct), in national newspapers no indexed, by specific search for authors, as well as, in consultations with books published in Brazil and in the World. RESULTS: 30 studies were included. Being 14 national articles, eight international articles, five national books, three international books, observing a tendency of the publications an increase in starting from 2000. Regional dissimilarity was observed in the publications with emphasis in the South and Southeast areas. CONCLUSIONS: Although the studies related to the children and adolelescents with excess of weight corporal are increasing quantitatively in Brazil and in the World, there is a lack of literature in the prescription of physical exercises for that specific group.

The present study aimed to identify the exercise motives according to selected socio-demographic indicators in university students. The sample was comprised of 2,380 individuals (1,213 men and 1,167 women) aged between 18 and 35 years. The exercise motives were identified with the Portuguese-translated version of the Exercise Motivations Inventory (EMI-2). University students gave significantly greater importance to exercise for reasons identified as Disease Prevention. Factors that are less relevant in statistical language were identified in a context of motivation associated with Social Recognition and Competition. Sex, age, family economic class, experience with exercise and body weight had a significant effect on the level of importance of exercise among university students. In conclusion, the results found can contribute to the development of physical activity promotion programs and a possible reduction in the number of dropouts among university students.

The Tri-Border Region has several social and health problems among young people, however, there are no data about the overweight between adolescents. This study investigated the prevalence of overweight and associated factors in students from Tri-Border Region: Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay. Study participants were 1.183 students, ages from 15 to 18 years. The overweight was identified according to body mass index cut-off points proposed by the World Health Organization. The Global School-Based Student Health Survey questionnaire was used to identify sociodemographic (gender and age) and behavioral factors (physical activity outside of school, commuting to school, time watching TV and fruits, vegetables, sweet, and salty snack consumption) associated with overweight in adolescents. It was used the descriptive statistics, analysis of variance, chi-square and binary logistic regression, adopting p < 0.05. Thirteen percent of students were overweight. Boys were approximately two ti...

ABSTRACT This study identified cardiovascular risk factors (CRF) in students from Tri-Border Region: Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay. Study participants were 1.183 adolescents of both sexes, ages from 15 to 18 years, who completed a questionnaire to identify the CRF. The proportion of adolescents with four or more CRF was 65.2%. Brazilian male adolescents had the highest prevalence of insufficiently active (78.3%), while the low consumption of vegetables (39.4%) and high time in sedentary activities (83.1%) were higher in Argentinean male adolescents. Paraguayan female adolescents had the highest proportion of insufficiently active (83.0%), while the high time in TV and media, low consumption of fruit, alcohol consumption and the clustering of four or more CRF were higher in Argentinean female adolescents (38.3%, 92.5%, 59.7% and 69.2%, respectively). These results may contribute to policies of healthy lifestyle promotion in the Tri-Border Region.

Boys were approximately two times more likely to have overweight than girls, independently of nationality. Brazilian students that realized passive commuting to school and Argentineans students with low consumption of vegetables (< 1 time/ day) were 2,2 and 2,9 times more likely to have overweight than their counterparts who performed active commuting to school and consumed vegetables daily, respectively. These results suggest that public policies to combat overweight should attention on promoting healthy lifestyle among young people from Tri-Border Region
