Eighteen cultivars and breeding lines of bell (Capsicum annum) and chile (C. frutescens) peppers from Costa Rica and Panama were tested for their reaction to Meloidogyne incognita. Many of these materials already have resistance or tolerance to bacterial wilt caused by Pseudomonas solanacearum and Xanthomonas spp. All materials tested were susceptible to the root-knot nematode. Gall indices and final nematode populations were high in the majority of the cases. However, the breeding lines P-63, P-66, and 10871 developed a significantly larger root mass with extensive ramification and smaller galls than the rest, suggesting that these materials might be tolerant. Additional evaluation under field condition and in bacteria infested soil is required.

espanolThe evolution of the reepithelization of a corneal ulcer in a experimental model in the rabbit was studied. We used therapeutic contact lens (T.C.L.) of normal and reduced thickness and a control no-T.C.L. group. We observed a statiscally significative delay in the healing between the group with normal thickness and the other two groups in latest times.

A total of 30 breeding lines of tomato were evaluated against Meloidogyne incognita under greenhouse conditions. The majority of the materials have either resistance or tolerance to bacterial wilt caused by Pseudomonas solanacearum. All materials tested were susceptible to the nematode in terms of root galling and reproduction. Mean soil temperature of above 28 C during the evaluation might have contributed to the difficulty in detecting nematode resistance. Nevertheless, abundant root systems and small galls in the genotypes 6A-16, 6A-19, and 6A-21 were used as criteria for selecting breeding lines suspected of having field tolerance to the nematode. These three lines should be tested under field conditions in bacteria and nematode-infested soil. Future prospects to incorporate resistance against the nematode are discussed.
