Plastic pollution in an aquatic ecosystem may negatively impact ecology, aquatic species, and causes economic damage. Rivers provide an excellent opportunity for intercepting plastic pollution before it reaches the ocean. The aim of this study is to identify and quantify the number of plastic debris in the Citarum River. Plastic debris was collected from April to August 2021 at three sampling sites based on the stream location, i.e. upstream, midstream, downstream, using a framed pocket net with 1cm-mesh size as a sampler with the dimension of 2x1x3 meter that was installed at two transversal locations of the river. Observation was conducted three times a day, morning, noon, and afternoon each with 15-30 minutes duration. The methods applied include plastic debris separation, enumeration, classification, volume estimation, and weighting. Type of plastics that are commonly found in high number of items are plastic bags, clear plastic bags, and plastic packaging. The highest volume of...

Remote sensing based indices has been particularly widely used for natural hazard monitoring. Drought is one of natural hazard that mainly effects agricultural production in Indonesia. Therefore, the remote sensing based indices for drought monitoring have many variations of indexes to overcome the needs. In this research, new remote sensing based indices, namely Difference Drought Index (DDI) was used to monitor the water cover of vegetation that can be differentiate the drought for six categories, wet cover to very strong drought in El Nino strong year 2015. The other remote sensing based indices also being studied, VHI (Vegetation Health Index) to compare with DDI index. The results showed these two indexes performed good result in identifying drought in El Nino year 2015. For future studies, more indexes are needed to be examined in order to find better index used for monitor drought in Indonesia.

Mining activities usually give negative impact to environment. Mining activities could give some effects on environment such as soil erosion, formation of sinkholes, biodiversity loss, and soil contamination, groundwater, and surface water by chemicals from mining processes. Mining companies in some countries are obliged to follow environmental restoration, make sure the exploited area is returned to its normal state. Oil and Gas facility which located in Grissik Village is one of the mining areas in South Sumatra surrounded by secondary forest. Several studies have been conducted in this area to find out how important the area is for flora and fauna habitats around the site. The objectives of this study include identifying plant species, measuring the index of species diversity, species evenness index in the study area, and calculate the importance value of plant species indices. The data collection of vegetation was conducted in two location plots and the observations applied a si...

Urban heat island is a condition when metropolitan area has warmer temperature that surrounding rural area. High population and activity inside the city can be the factors that trigger urban heat island. Indonesia has some large cities with big population. Jakarta and Surabaya are two largest and most populous cities in Indonesia. In this study, the effect of urban heat island in those two cities will be compared using Landsat 8 data in the period of 2018. The correlation between land surface temperature and the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) were analyzed to explore the impacts of the green areas on the urban heat island. The result showed the differences of surface temperature between two largest cities in Indonesia in 2018. The result also showed negative correlation between NDVI and surface temperature that indicates that the green area can decrease the effect on the urban heat island.

Drought is a natural hazard indicated by the decreasing of rainfall and water storage in the region and impacting agricultural sector. Recently, satellites data are widely used for calculating the drought indices. Since 2010, Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) and the National Institute of Aeronautics and Space of Indonesia (LAPAN) had launched satellite, called “LISAT” LAPAN-IPB Satellite. The objectives of the research are (1) to compare NDVI values from two different satellites –LISAT and Landsat (2) to analyzed the relationship between climate variability using spatial rainfall data with NDVI values over Pakisjaya District in specific time of study, (3) to validate NDVI derived from LISAT data with field observation. The study area will focus in Pakisjaya District, Karawang, West Java, one of Java agricultural production center. The biggest potentials in Pakisjaya district are agriculture, plantations and fish ponds. Therefore, the identification of drought in Cirebon is expect...

Drought is natural hazard which has causing several impacts, such as decreasing of air and water quality, land degradation, forest fire, decreasing of agricultural crops production. Drought assessment using drought indices have widely conducted for drought monitoring. Remote-sensing-based indices defined as an index which using remote sensing data for mapping the drought condition in particular area or region. This research aims to compare remote-sensing-based drought indices, namely TCI, VCI and VHI to obtain a better understanding about the differentiation between each index, and their application for monitoring drought in East Java on El Nino year 2015. LST and EVI data were used to construct the indices. The result showed, each index proved to be useful, quick, sufficient and inexpensive tool for drought monitoring. However, each index has its differences. TCI proved to be detected drought sensitively in dry season or months when high temperature occurred. While VCI detected drought more sensitive in wet season as well (December-January-February to May) than TCI and VHI. Meanwhile, VHI which the enhancement of TCI and VHI has combined two indicators to provide better comprehension about drought occurrence.
