In most developed economies there exist a clear gap between men and women in terms of prevalence of entrepreneurial activity. The gender gap can be traced back to the general perceptions of gender in society, where entrepreneurial venturing is culturally defined as a masculine activity. In this paper, we analyse how such gendered norms are brought into Triple Helix innovation system models, and identify roles and challenges of NGOs in the alternative conceptualization of Quadruple Helix. Based on an exploratory case study of a Quadruple Helix innovation system project in the tourism industry, we find that NGOs may fill four roles in bridging the gender gap: (1) collaborative platforms for women-led SMEs, (2) legitimating and linking women-led SMEs to governmental and academic actors, (3) developing competences and process innovations related to entrepreneurial venturing outside traditional Triple Helix constellations and (4) carrying individual and societal aspects of entrepreneuring.

■ Drawing on the current research in general leadership, we propose that a process ontol-ogy is relevant and rewarding for project leadership studies. We argue that project leadership can be studied as the ongoing social production of direction through the construction of actors' space of action, involving continuous construction and reconstruction of (1) past project activities and events; (2) positions and areas of responsibility; (3) discarded, ongoing, and future issues; and (4) intensity, rhythm, and pace. Through an ethnographic case study of an organizational change project, we show how space of action and hence the project direction are in constant flux and becoming.

In this article, we argue that an increased focus on the processes of projectification would be beneficial to project research. By introducing a distinction between narrow and broad conceptualisations of projectification, we extend this research area from its current concern with the increased primacy of projects in contemporary organisational structures into an interest for cultural and discursive processes in a society in which notions of projects are invoked. Through an illustration from our earlier empirical research on the sustenance of project work form and its consequences, the implications of applying broad conceptualisations are further discussed.
In this article, we discuss how 'managerialist' and 'leaderist' discourses (O'Reilly and Reed Public Administration 88:960–978, 2010; Organization Studies 32:1079–1101, 2011) are drawn upon in the context of the deregulation of Swedish... more
In this article, we discuss how 'managerialist' and 'leaderist' discourses (O'Reilly and Reed Public Administration 88:960–978, 2010; Organization Studies 32:1079–1101, 2011) are drawn upon in the context of the deregulation of Swedish higher education. As of 2011, there has been new legislation that frames Swedish universities as 'autonomous' and transfers most of the regulative responsibilities from the government level to university vice-chancellors. The aim of this article is to inquire into how tensions within and between managerialist and leaderist discourse are handled in the promotion of New Public Management reforms and the consequences thereof in terms of how leadership in the higher education sector is constructed. We analyse how these discourses are employed in the core documents leading up to the 2010 Riksdag decision to enact most of the proposed deregulations, and the subsequent evaluation undertaken by the social democratic government that took over in 2014. Based in this analysis, we suggest that the texts indeed draw upon notions of leadership and leaders as necessary for Swedish universities to survive and thrive in the future, but that the envisaged practise of this 'strong leadership' can either be characterised as a discursive void or described in terms of de-personalised, instrumental managerial surveillance and control.

Extant leadership literatures tend to favour the positive and the normative over the negative and descriptive, and context-free individuals over situated organisational interaction. Dysfunctional leadership thus usually becomes a matter of evil individuals deviating from established norms, rather than how leadership interaction processes unfold. In this paper, we view leadership interaction processes in terms of construction of direction, coorientation and action space. We apply this perspective to an empirical study of an organisational change project in a sub-unit of a multinational corporation. Conceptual consequences of the proposed perspective are discussed in terms of confused direction, deteriorating coorientation and delimited action space.

Project leadership should be of great importance to leadership studies in general for several reasons. First, it is a most common leadership assignment in contemporary organizations, implying a general need for knowledge development. Second, it is a leadership assignment which is often not based in a formal managerial position, but rather a temporary team mission–making it a special form of leadership of special interest to both practitioners and scholars alike.

Quadruple Helix Central Baltic is an Interreg IV A project focusing on gender equality, entrepreneurship and ICT innovations. It runs from October 2009 until December 2011 and has eight partners from three countries. The name, Quadruple Helix Central Baltic, derives from the working model where four sectors of society ie public authorities, researchers, entrepreneurs and civil society actors, have come together to strengthen the tourism industry in the archipelagos of the Central Baltic Sea area.

Background'Making Projects Critical'is the title of series of international workshops intended to provide a forum for research from a wide range of critical perspectives relating to all aspects of projects, including project management, project based organising and the'projectification'of society. Such critique finds inspiration in the writings of, for example, Bourdieu, Foucault, Latour, Habermas, Derrida, Deleuze, Gramsci Bauman, Beck, and Zizek. It also draws on Labour Process Theory, Critical Theory, Actor Network Theory, ...
