Blended learning in higher education requires the quality framework created by any given faculty dedicated to one and only aim: integration of online education into the mainstream of higher education, in our case sports second cycle master education. At the Faculty of sport in Nis, Serbia, it was established to assess online and blended learning (Lorenzo & Moore, 2002; Laumakis, Graham, & Dziuban, 2009). This framework comprises five parameters: learning effectiveness, student satisfaction, faculty satisfaction, cost effectiveness, and access (Lorenzo & Moore, 2002). Measuring sports students' progress and learning effectiveness showed 82% satisfaction with their learning and teaching experience. Conventional mode encompassed 120 sports students at the master level last year (2016). This year, 2016, the Faculty enrolled 90 students opting for a distance learning mode, making it 75% of the total students' body. As for the cost effectiveness, the tuition is the same for both m...

The application and integration of technology in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) contexts may pose challenges and create opportunities which might be different from the ones in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) contexts. This review was conducted to examine the effectiveness and quantity of previous research studies on the use of technology in ESP instruction. A total of 55 research studies were analyzed using the technology typology developed by Golonka, Bowles, Frank, Richardson, and Freynik (2014). The findings indicated that research findings on the use of technology in ESP instruction are different from the ones identified in the literature of using technology in EFL instruction. The results only confirmed the evidence for learning outcomes and efficacy of the use of course/learning management systems, corpora, and wikis in ESP instruction. Course/learning management systems can promote the quality of ESP instruction and promote students’ listening comprehension. The use ...

With the unrelenting spread of globalization, the English language has been firmly established as the Lingua Franca. Now more than ever, the importance of learning English is paramount within nearly all professional and educational sectors. English for Specific Purposes (ESP) has long been accepted as an effective method for teaching English as a foreign language. In recent years, it has experienced an increasing presence in secondary and tertiary education across the globe. This is predominantly due to its learner-centered approach that focuses on developing linguistic competence in the student’s specific discipline, may that be academics, business or tourism, for example. Positioning English for Specific Purposes in an English Language Teaching Context attempts to present and define the relevance and scope of ESP within English Language teaching. From mobile phones as educational tools to the language needs of medical students, the contributors to this volume examine and propose d...

Research in discourse processing can help solve some of the pressing challenges in foreign or second language writing pedagogy. Discourse plays an important role in helping the learner shift from shallow to deep comprehension, from being a mere fact collector to becoming an inquisitive explainer and later on, competent domain specific (in our research - sports literature) writer. But to make our students proficient in text handling is a huge task. To accomplish this task we need tools and the right tools for the students to freely explore the wealth of sports writing are small but hugely significant words called metadiscourse markers. Knowledge of their functions, their proper meanings, and their well deserved place within the framework of the foreign or second language writing pedagogy is what separates the novice from the experienced sports texts writers. Academic discourse contains frames for scientific writing implying the existance of an array of formal unities that undertake t...

From the onset of ESP teaching approach to English as a foreign language, it has been established as thoroughly pragmatic. Its theoretical foundations were laid by Hutchinson and Waters in 1987, in now canonical book,  English for Specific Purposes . In it, they abstracted the distinguishing meaning of ESP as related to teaching general English, and its essential principles of needs analysis, syllabus and material design, testing. In 1998, in another seminal book,  Developments in English for Specific Purposes: A Multi-Disciplinary Approach,  Tony Dudley-Evans and Maggie Jo St John, observed that it is “ significant that so much of the writing has concentrated on the procedures of ESP and on relating course design to learners’ specific needs rather than on theoretical matters.”  To this day, there has not appeared a publication that would be perceived as all encompassing regarding the theory of ESP, as those two.

A clear delineation is obvious to understand specific aspects regarding the use of academic writing in health care. Thus, more pragmatic and less general aspects of academic writing for medical purposes will be taken into account. Due to solid experience in students’ education of LSP at medical faculties, we are delighted to share our academic experience primarily with students as well as with our colleagues. The paper will be focused on emphasizing the critical points of structuring medical texts. Namely, it will present the path of text structuring to help readers understand the specific aspects of high relevance for medical authors. Also, it will draw attention to the role of health care practitioners as well as how they should evaluate this aspect in their professional communication. Furthermore, we would like to pay attention to approaching fundamental problems in academic writing in health care.

Hereby the claim is presented that among adult population of learners of English language in academia and life-long learning formats, the predominant approach in English Language Teaching (ELT) needs to be English for Specific Purposes (ESP), since General English has mostly been mastered by then, and because those learners then need linguistic training that would enable them to upgrade their professional efficacy and so remain competitive as demanded by contemporary professional/scientific global community. Nonetheless, such relevance of ESP for adult learners has not yet been recognized by main stakeholders in the field of ELT, namely academia and most famous ELT textbooks and reference books publishing houses, leaving ESP practitioners still on their own regarding professional development. This general overview is an attempt to rationalize the reasons for this paradoxical situation.

The article is an attempt to look at the reality of teaching English for business purposes/ Business English from a practical point of view in the tertiary educational environment at three faculties in three different countries, namely Slovenia, Serbia, and Montenegro. The article emphasizes the similarities and negligible differences among the three systems in this respect, drawing on the long historical mutual heritage and also mutual tendencies for further development. Initially, the article introduces Business English as the most entrepreneurial arm within English language teaching/general English and lays down the key similarities and distinctions between the two. Next, the requirements of teaching/learning Business English in general are compared to the demands of teaching/learning English for business purposes/Business English at three different faculties. Eventually, conclusions are drawn from the comparison.

Many students have trouble making a transition to the more independent learning required at the university level of studies as compared to their previous study levels and habits. University study requires students to take responsibility for their own learning, to be more self-directed, to make decisions about what they will focus on and how much time they will spend on learning both inside and outside the classroom. How does this fact relate to ESP? First, students are highly motivated to learn their future expertise language. From the first year on they have to write seminar papers, thus writing skills come to the fore. They are asked to give oral presentations so they need their professional language. Now, they pay more attention to their mistakes, they are anxious to improve their performance. At their second year of studies they are preparing to go abroad, usually the States. Naturally, they need conversational experience and insist on learning it. And we as teachers must follow...
