Abstract The impact of internet use on food and nutrition security of rural households in Ghana is investigated in this study. To offset the potential challenge of selection bias, an endogenous treatment regression (ETR) technique is utilized for the analysis.. The results reveal that Internet use can improve smallholder farmers’ food and nutrition security. Internet usage has a profound positive effect on the food security of households with off-farm work and larger size of landholding. Our results suggest the intensification of efforts to enhance Internet connectivity across the nation by the government and policymakers is essential since it can go a long way to affect household welfare. The findings also highlight the importance of information and communication technologies (ICTs), the Internet, patronization to improve rural household welfare.

Abstract Information and communication and technologies (ICTs) have contributed to national development in recent years. However, less is known on how ICT could help improve productivity in the aquaculture field. This study investigates how the use of the Internet can help improve fish farms' productivity. More specifically, using survey data from two regions in Ghana and the econometric model approach, this study explored the quantitative impacts of Internet use on fish farm productivity. The results are as follows. First, the study revealed that Internet use is affected by household total land holdings, access to credit and off-farm employment, education, being a member of an association and how household perceives the use of the internet and household head age. Second, regarding the quantitative relationship, Internet use can help increase farm productivity. Compared with males, the impact of female heads’ Internet use on farm productivity is more prominent. Finally, the productivity effect of Internet use for farmers with no access to off-farm work is greater than that for those with off-farm work access. Our findings provide policy implications to improve farm household Internet use and fish farms production.

Previous studies have analyzed how the adoption of genetically engineered or modified technologies have affected agricultural crops such as corn, soybeans, cotton, and barley without focusing on wheat. Also, given the negative impact of drought on wheat production, no studies have focused on the implications of drought tolerant (HB4) and CRISPR/gene-editing on wheat trade. To address these issues, this study employed the partial equilibrium analysis and analyzed the implications of drought tolerant (HB4) and CRISPR/gene-editing technology adoption on wheat trade under various scenarios. The study found that when Argentina, Australia, United States, Canada, and Russia adopt gene-editing wheat, all consuming countries experience a welfare gain except Japan, Korea, Belgium, Netherland, and Italy. More so, Argentina, Mexico, Nigeria, Brazil, Egypt, and Venezuela continue to consume CRISPR wheat in all scenarios. Also, all producing countries experience a gain in producer welfare

The main objectives of the study were to examine the effect of infrastructure (i.e. railway network) on economic growth and to examine the direction of causality between economic growth and infrastructure using historical data covering the period of 1980 to 2016 and cointegration analysis. The findings from the study revealed a positive and significant effect of infrastructure on economic growth in the long-run however, the effect of infrastructure on economic growth was not significant in the short-run analysis. Also, the test of causality found a unidirectional causality running from economic growth to infrastructure. To increase economic growth in the United States, this study recommends that both the Federal and the State Government should increase its investments in infrastructure spending especially in railways.

The study examined the relationship between exchange rates movements and stock market capitalisation in Ghana using Johansen cointegration technique and vector error correction model with quarterly time series data covering the period of 1990 to 2013. The study found a negative and significant relationship between exchange rates and stock market capitalisation both in the long-run and in the short run suggesting that a depreciation of the Ghana cedi against the US dollar is inimical to the performance of the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) Market. In order to increase stock market capitalisation, the study first recommends that the Central Bank of Ghana, the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Agriculture should adopt policies that will boost the real side of the economy such as increasing agricultural productivity to ensure increase in foreign exchange earnings in the country and hence preventing the cedi from depreciating. The study examined the main determinants of real exchange rates fluctuations in Ghana using the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) approach [bound testing approach] and vector error correction model with annual time series data covering the period of 1970 to 2014. The findings from the study revealed that whereas increase in inflation rate, trade openness and government consumption expenditure cause the cedi to depreciate against the US dollar, an increase in real GDP growth was found to appreciate the cedi against the US dollar. Based on these findings, the study suggested these recommendations to enhance the performance of the cedi against the US dollar. First, the Bank of Ghana, Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Food and Agriculture should adopt policies that will reduce inflation and increase real GDP growth. These policies include increase in food production, reduction of interest rates and corporate tax and increase privatisation. Again, the Ministry of Trade and Industry...

The main objective of the study is to examine the impact of economic and social infrastructure on FDI in flows in Ghana using the Two Stage Least Squares (2SLS) estimation technique and quarterly time series data from 1975 to 2012. The results indicate a positive and statistically significant effects of economic and social infrastructure on net FDI inflows in Ghana. While market size, trade openness and agglomeration exerted a positive and statistically significant effect on FDI inflows, inflation and external debt stocks revealed a negative effect on FDI inflows. In order to attract more FDI inflows, the study recommends an increase investment in electricity generation and educational facilities respectively to enhance economic and social infrastructure.

PurposeIn Covid-19 pandemic era when most households' members have lost their jobs and incomes, the government assistance and programs in ensuring household consumption smoothing is very significant. The main objectives of this study are to analyze the impact of government expenditure and free maternal healthcare (FMHC) policy on household consumption expenditure in Ghana in both long run and short run.Design/methodology/approachThey used the ARDL to estimate the impact of government expenditure on household consumption and Segmented Linear Regression to examine impact of FMHC policy household consumption using longitudinal data from 1967 to 2018.FindingsThe results revealed that government expenditure had a negative and statistically significant effect on household consumption expenditure suggesting that government expenditure crowed-out private consumption in Ghana. Also, it was observed that before the implementation of the FMHC policy, there was an increase household consump...

Aggregate export supply function for US corn and bilateral import functions for US corn by Mexico, Japan, China, South Korea, and the EU are estimated using ARDL estimation techniques. The findings of the study show that export price, technology, and lagged exports impact positively on US corn exports, while real effective exchange rates and ethanol production negatively impact US corn export. In addition, the current import price had a negative effect on Mexico, China, and the EU demand for US corn. However, for Japan and South Korea, it is the previous price that negatively affects corn import. More so, livestock production, NAFTA and WTO involvement positively affected corn import by all importing countries. Also, the Chinese population positively impacted corn import from the US. GDP in Mexico, Japan, South Korea, and the EU had a positive effect on corn imports, while China’s GDP impacted negatively on corn imports. More so, the US has a more price elastic supply of corn. Mexic...

The $20.81 trillion U.S. economy relies on a vast infrastructure network to thrive; however, empirical studies that examined that impact of infrastructure on economic growth in the U.S. are limited. This study’s principal objective was to examine the effect of railway lines on economic growth using annual data from 1980 to 2016 and cointegration analysis. The results showed a positive and significant impact of railway lines on economic growth in the long-run and short-run. The impulse response analysis indicates that shocks to railway lines initially cause GDP growth rates to increase and decrease continuously. The variance decomposition analysis also suggests that overtime, railway lines contribute largely to the variations in economic growth followed by inflation and population. This study’s outcome has important implications not only for the U.S. economy but also for developing and emerging countries. The results suggest that railway lines investments matter for economic growth i...

The emergence of agricultural cooperatives is extensively viewed as a necessary institutional arrangement that can help farmers in developing countries overcome the constraints that impede them from improving sustainable agricultural production and acquiring new marketing opportunities. Therefore, this study examines the determinants of cooperative membership and its impact on fish farm household income, using data collected from two regions in Ghana. An endogenous switching regression (ESR) model is utilized to address the potential sample selection bias issue. The results show that household heads’ decisions to join cooperatives are affected by their access to credit, off-farm work, education level, and peer influence. Cooperative membership can increase both household and farm income by 28.54% and 34.75%, respectively. Moreover, we show that different groups of households’ cooperative impacts on farm and household income are heterogeneous. Our findings highlight the importance of...
