In this paper we are analysing, from a diacronic perspective, how a mountain range can influence, as a determining factor, on the different ways of life. The chosen area is the central stretch of the Iberian Mountain Range, where the authors of this paper have been researching for the last thirty years. The time range spans seven millennia, those running from the earliest occupation of the earliest farming communities, towards 5.000 BC, to the beginning of modern times, around 1750 AD.

The settlement of El Taratrato (Alcañiz, Teruel), excavated almost entirely by Vicente Bardavíu and Pierre Paris in the years 1924-25, has been considered, among 20th century archaeological historiography, as paradigm of a central path village following a model of proto-historic urbanism, characteristic of the Ebro Valley and the East of the Iberian peninsula, which had a main entrance defended by just a tower in the shape of a square. However, the recent works of preservation and consolidation of the structures dug out nearly a century ago, as well as the results of the later ones have confirmed the presence of a much more complex defensive system that, in all probability, was formed by other three large towers in the southern area (two of them already excavated), besides a defensive ditch that seems to be partially well conserved in the West area. It must be added to these finds, must be added the presence of some warehousing rooms with small benches plastered with lime or gypsum, and the proof of the previous and later occupations of the Iberian village, including a phase of the Early Iron Age and the continuation of the settlement in the vicinity to El Taratrato in Roman time.

ABSTRACT The archaeological excavations carried out in Area 3 of the Celtiberian city of Segeda I (Mara, Zaragoza) have yielded significant information about this community in its stages prior to the city's destruction and abandonment in 153 BCE. Area 3 constitutes the sector of the city where the settlement of the Titti and other Segedan neighbours has been unearthed. Segeda's destruction constitutes a landmark in a period that saw the first contacts between the Celtiberian peoples and Rome. It is within this historical context that we analyse sekeida's monetary mints as well as a particular set of pottery-that which imitates Italic vessel shapes and evidences a continuation of traditional forms.

I. SUMMARY During the excavations of the 2001 campaign carried out in the area 3 of the Celtiberian town of Segeda I (Mara, Zaragoza) a set of materials which date from before 153 BC, when Segeda was destroyed by the army of the Roman consul Nobilior. In this paper we present a preview of the study of the most significant ceramic materials of the Iberian technique crockery (typology and productions), as well as the discoid tokens discovered in houses at the extension area of the town (BURILLO, e. p.); this way we intend to show the methodology used for the study of pottery of the Celtiberian site of Segeda I. INTRODUCCIÓN El material cerámico ibérico analizado en este artículo proviene de las excavaciones realizadas en la ciudad celtibérica de Segeda I (Mara, Zaragoza), área 3, durante la campaña de agosto y septiembre de 2001 bajo la dirección del doctor Francisco Burillo.
