Habituated callus tissues derived from leaf explants of Lathyrus sativus L. (grass pea) were cultured under different environmental conditions such as drought, salinity and deficiency or oversupply of micronutrients. The biosynthesis of the neuro-excitatory β-ODAP (β-N-oxalyl-L-α,β-diaminopropionic acid) was induced by feeding the precursor BIA, (β-isoxazolin-5-on-2-yl)-alanine, to those calli habituated under different stress conditions. Conversion of BIA into β-ODAP was reduced by Zn(2+) at different levels of Fe(2+) supplements while excess of Fe(2+) enhanced it at different Zn(2+) levels in the media. The biosynthesis of β-ODAP was increased by both oversupply and deficiency of Mn(2+) manganese while B(3+) as well as Co(2+) increased it significantly by oversupply. Al(3+) enhanced the conversion of BIA into β-ODAP significantly in a concentration-dependent way. Cu(2+) also reduced the formation of β-ODAP when increased in the media. Mo(6+) had no apparent effect. NaCl decreased the conversion of BIA into β-ODAP proportionately with the increase in salinity. β-ODAP was increased with increasing mannitol concentration till -0.23MPa while at this osmotic potential created with PEG-20,000 the formation of β-ODAP is completely inhibited in low toxin calli. These experiments demonstrate the importance of environmental factors, especially micronutrients and salinity, on the biosynthesis of β-ODAP.

Open restaurant food vendor and consumer status as well as hygienic condition of different types of food at Dumki, Patuakhali upazila, and Kuakata union of Patuakhali district were determined. Ninety shops with 180 open restaurant food samples were collected. Among the food vendors, 97.78% were male. Maximum (68%) of them were between 21-40 years of age. The majority (54%) of them were primary educated. Half of the vending shops located on the sidewalk and one third on the footpath. The majority (81%) of the respondent had their daily net profit up to TK. 500. About 64% of vendors did not cover their food while selling; 47.78% used unclean towels and 27.78 % used plate followed by paper & polythene (49.45%) as a serving media. Everyone used tube-well water as drinking water. The few had a business permit or food-selling permit. Maximum (83.33%) consumers were male, and the highest consumers (76.667%) were aged between 21-40 years. The majority (57.77%) of consumers always consume fo...

Grass pea can be consumed as supplementary nutrients in a diet without a neurolathyrism health problem among all classes of people in the south-central coastal area of Bangladesh. The study aimed at assessing the grass pea consumption pattern in diet and detection of neurolathyrism patients over 400 respondents among four villages. An investigation was also done on various paralytic admitted patients at hospital in the south central coastal region of Bangladesh. Among respondents of four villages 63% were male, 38.75% was illiterate, 41.5% was completed primary education and 30% of respondent’s monthly income Tk. 6000-9500 was maximum. Among respondents 89.6% consumed grass pea was 1/3 or less than cereal at its proportion in a meal and they all consumed meat, fish, egg, vegetables also. In grass pea food items 25.25% respondents prefer Dal barta was maximum and Dobakhesari (snack) 0.75% was lowest. 95.75% respondent was used various spices like onion, garlic, chili, tamarind etc. w...
