This article focuses on the processes of exclusion by which male victims of sexual violence in conflict (SVC) are overlooked or erased from view. Opening sections explain the background of SVC before reviewing relevant secondary source literature. Themes explored include lack of recognition and historical factors. Relevant texts often bear misleading or ambiguous signifiers that perpetuate the confusion and lack of awareness that exists on the issue of male-directed SVC, and this issue is explored in a focus on the problem of language. The second half of the article considers the historical roots of SVC by Imperial Japanese forces and explores the practice of same-sex relationships in Japanese samurai culture. The practice of nanshoku was driven underground into a libidinal economy that became characterized ever more acutely by misogyny and sexual aggression. A culture of impunity for perpetrators of sexual violence, whether female- or male- directed, during peacetime will be exacerbated during periods of conflict. This assertion is based on insights across a wide range of disciplines including health, law, security, masculinities studies, and historical analysis.

on metapragmatics. On the whole, the findings presented here highlight the way in which the study of metapragmatics is genre-related, context-bound, and culture-sensitive. The functional pragmatic microanalyses of authentic data will definitely shed light on further theoretical research on the topic. However, it seems to me that each chapter was written in a vacuum. Although we have Hübler and Bublitz’s thematic introduction, there is little sense that contributors know what other contributors are doing. Meanwhile, it would have been useful to provide a glossary of those rather confusing terms: metalanguage, metacommunication, metadiscourse, metalinguistic awareness, to name but a few. Nevertheless, this volume is interesting and engagingly written and stands in its own right as a valuable addition to the literature on metapragmatics.

This survey study investigates the possibility of mismatches between critical pedagogical initiatives and learner expectations or fields of interest. Our opinion survey of 200 first and second-year undergraduate students at two universities in western Japan, explored preferences regarding 21 discussion topics. Fourteen of the topics were related to critical sociocultural (CS) issues while seven topics were related to interpersonal and intrapersonal (IP) concerns. The principal findings of the survey showed a significant preference for IP topics over CS topics. These initial survey findings may indicate a need for critically minded pedagogues to lay more groundwork in the classroom before initiating a syllabus that focuses on CS topics. Further research will provide qualitative data to explore reasons why learners may feel an aversion to sociocultural topics for classroom discussion. 本論は、教育者の教育構想と学習者の期待もしくは興味のある分野とのミスマッチの可能性を調査す。 この調査は西日本の2つの大学の1年生と2年生200人を対象に21の議論トピックに関する興味度を調査したもので...

While the #MeToo movement has led to successful campaigns against sexual harassment in many parts of the world, results have been mixed in Japan. In spite of the fact that #MeToo has inspired a number of offshoot campaigns, many victims of sexual abuse remain silent. Greater attention needs to be directed at the reasons for this reluctance to pursue justice. One factor that requires greater scrutiny is the role of public conversations; that is, widely reported comments from prominent members of society which generate some level of discussion and which exercise some influence over people’s way of thinking on particular topics. If public conversations denigrate women by labeling them as sexually promiscuous or as failures in terms of normative motherhood, the result may be increased violence against women and greater difficulty for women who seek justice in the aftermath of sexual violence. This argument is developed in this article which explores the ways in which a set of public con...

In recent years, extensive empirical data has indicated that acts of severe sexual assault are being perpetrated against large numbers of men in many areas of conflict around the world. In spite of such data, recognition of this problem within gender studies remains limited. This is due to many reasons including the opposition of a variety of feminism that is reluctant to acknowledge male victimhood. This paper argues that feminist reservations about a focus on male-directed sexual violence in conflict are unfounded, especially as adherence to dichotomous gender models of “male equals perpetrator/female equals victim” ignores the comparable suffering of male survivors. A feminist analysis is enriched and complemented by a focus on male survivors and on the gendered power relations that operate among men.

Since the end of 2017, many controversies and social media campaigns, especially the “#MeToo” movement, have kept the issue of sexual harassment in the public eye. While the #MeToo movement has impacted many in the United States and elsewhere, its impact in Japan has been considerably less. This is surprising as sexual harassment inflicts very negative effects on victims and the problem is prevalent in many social spheres in Japan, including in educational institutions. This article outlines the extent of the problem and provides suggestions on classroom activities and educational initiatives to raise awareness for the transformation of currently toxic conditions.

In recent years, extensive empirical data has indicated that acts of severe sexual assault are being perpetrated against large numbers of men in many areas of conflict around the world. This paper conducted an extensive review of relevant literature to evaluate levels of recognition of male victims. The review indicates that recognition of this problem within gender studies remains limited. This is due to many reasons including the opposition of a variety of feminism that is reluctant to acknowledge male victimhood. Masculinities studies may play a key role in developing a theory of sexual violence that encompasses all victims. “Inclusive feminism” is enriched and complemented by a focus on male survivors and on the gendered power relations that operate among men.
