    This scoping review aims to explore nursing students' insights of learning evidence-based practice skills through the use of interactive online technology. Studies were obtained from seven electronic databases (PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Web of Science, Scopus and ProQuest Dissertations and Theses Global) until May 2021. This review adhered to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis extension for Scoping Reviews and was guided by the Arksey and O'Malley (2005) framework. Findings were analyzed using thematic analysis. Three themes were derived from the 22 included studies: 1) Embracing new changes, 2) Challenges to tackle, and 3) Towards future improvement. Many nursing students reported positive learning experiences of evidence-based practice skills using interactive online technology. The challenges faced by students and suggestions for improvement were discussed. Future online evidence-based practice courses should consider blended pedagogies, providing students with effective scaffolding (step-by-step guidance) and allowing students to choose their preferred instructional strategies. Thorough planning, testing and orientation should be conducted prior to the programs' implementation. Lastly, future studies should aim to achieve higher study rigor to obtain more accurate results.     Objective Hospital at Home (HaH) programs have been shown to improve quality of care and patient satisfaction, and reduce bed occupancy rate in hospitals. Despite the prevalence of HaH in Western countries, studies in Asia are limited and the perception of HaH remains underexplored in Asian context. Understanding the perceptions of stakeholders is vital before implementing HaH in any new settings. Thus, the aim of this study is to explore the perceptions of referring physicians, care providers, patients, and caregivers on HaH programs in a multiracial country such as in Singapore. Methods This study used a descriptive qualitative design. Participants from 2 tertiary hospitals in Singapore, including 13 referring physicians, 10 care providers, 15 patients, and 3 caregivers, were interviewed between June 2020 and September 2020. Data were analyzed using inductive thematic analysis. Results The overarching theme titled “The stakeholders’ perception on HaH” was pillared by 4 main themes: (1) patients suitable for HaH; (2) perceived advantages and benefits of HaH; (3) perceived risks, anxiety, and concerns about HaH; and (4) potential enablers of HaH. Overall, the findings reported that most of the stakeholders embraced HaH. Timely medical interventions and support from care providers were reportedly important factors to maintain patient safety and quality of care. The importance of having adequate resources and sound financing mechanisms to develop a successful HaH program was also highlighted. Conclusions This study offered insights into HaH from the perspectives of stakeholders in Singapore and facilitate the planning of future HaH pilot programs in multiracial Singapore and other Asian countries.

    OBJECTIVES To examine the effectiveness of end-of-life educational interventions in improving nurses and nursing students' attitude toward death and care of dying patients. DESIGN A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials and controlled clinical trials. DATA SOURCES English language studies were sourced from five electronic databases (PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, PsycINFO and ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Global) to November 2020. REVIEW METHODS A meta-analysis was conducted using the random-effect model. Standardized mean differences with 95% confidence intervals were used as the effect measure under the inverse-variance method. Heterogeneity was assessed using the I2 statistics and Cochran's Q chi-squared test. The Cochrane risk of bias tool conducted quality appraisal at the study level while the Grades of Recommendation, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation approach conducted quality appraisal at the outcome level. RESULTS Nine studies were included. Meta-analyses showed that end-of-life educational interventions were effective in improving attitude toward death and care of dying patients among nurses and nursing students at post-intervention. The sustainability of improvement of both attitudes could not be determined due to the lack of follow-up assessments by the included studies. Subgroup analyses revealed that both nurses and nursing students showed similar attitude improvement, online educational courses were feasible and attitude toward death may require longer interventions (more than 2 months) to show improvement. CONCLUSIONS Future trials could be improved by organizing both group-based segments and combined sessions for nurses and nursing students. Online components could be incorporated for convenience. Topics related to spirituality and grief management should be included. Future research is needed to examine the sustainability of nurses and nursing students' improvement in attitude toward death and care of dying patients, as well as how the change in their attitude affects their clinical practices.

    BACKGROUND The shortage of nurses has become a global phenomenon, and methods of decreasing the attrition rate of nurses have been explored. Resilience was one of the important factors that increased the retention rate of nurses who stayed in this highly stressful profession. OBJECTIVES To understand how undergraduate nursing students perceive and experience their clinical placements and to identify the factors that helped them build resilience. DESIGN A qualitative design utilizing focus group interviews was adopted for this study. PARTICIPANTS Nineteen third- and fourth-year undergraduate nursing students in a Bachelor of Nursing program participated in this study. SETTING This study was conducted at a local university in Singapore. METHOD Four audio-taped focus group interviews were conducted. RESULTS Students reported that they were stressed while facing challenges head-on during their first clinical placements, mainly due to a lack of peer and clinical support. Gradually, students built resilience overtime and were able to adapt to the ward culture through peer support and reframing coping strategies. CONCLUSION Nursing students gradually built resilience after accumulating experiences from their clinical placements. Although they eventually adapted well, peer, clinical, and informational support during clinical placements were lacking. Resilience programs that teach positive coping strategies and mindfulness training could be implemented in the undergraduate nursing curriculum.

    To review the evidence to determine the effects of psychological interventions on self-care and psychological and health outcomes in patients with chronic heart failure (CHF). We evaluated the effectiveness of randomized controlled trials using psychological methods or theory on self-care behaviors, anxiety and depression levels, HRQoL, and physical function. Studies published in English, from January 2006 to December 2016, were considered. We searched published and unpublished studies in the following electronic databases: CINAHL, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, PubMed, PsycINFO, Scopus, Web of Science, and ProQuest Dissertations and Theses. Risk of bias was assessed using a standard procedure based on the Cochrane Collaboration tool described in the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions. A total of 29 articles, consisting of 25 studies with 3837 participants, were included in this systematic review. Findings showed that despite heterogeneity between studies, psychological interventions tend to improve self-care in CHF patients without clinical depression and cognitive impairment. Pooled results also revealed that the intervention effect on short-term HRQoL, as measured by the Minnesota Living with Heart Failure Questionnaire (MLHFQ), was in favor of the intervention group (combined MD -7.53, 95% CI -12.83 to -2.23); however, such effect disappeared as the length of time from the intervention increased. The intervention effects on the participants' anxiety level, as measured by HADS, and physical function, as measured by 6MWT, were not statistically significant. Efforts aimed at promoting self-care were the cornerstone of HF disease management. Nurses play an important role in patient education and secondary prevention. Compared to other professionals, nurses have more patient contact opportunities and are more holistic in all aspects of disease management; therefore, more nurses can be trained to incorporate the brief psychological techniques (such as motivational interviews and cognitive behavior therapy) to maximize intervention effectiveness. The main limitation of the review is the moderate to high level of heterogeneity among the included studies, which may partially undermine the reliability and reproducibility of the results. Because of the heterogeneity among the studies, a conclusion on the optimal format and forms of the intervention could not be drawn. Replication of the studies will be required in the future to isolate the active intervention component and to identify the ideal intervention format and dosage.

Its benefits have been well-documented, but limited studies have examined its influencing factors. Research aim: To investigate factors influencing fathers’ involvement in their partners’ breastfeeding. Methods: A descriptive correlational design was used. Data were collected from 151 fathers from four obstetrics wards of a public hospital in Singapore from October 2016 to December 2016. Self-administered questionnaires were used to examine factors such as fathers’ knowledge and involvement in breastfeeding, attitudes towards breastfeeding, and perceived improvements of knowledge and attitudes for fathers’ involvement in breastfeeding on the discharge day of their partners’ and 2 weeks post-birth.     Abstract Background There is increasing evidence that being resilient negates the deleterious impacts of stress and promote academic success. To develop an insight into how important resilience is, it is vital to explore how higher education students perceive and develop resilience. Objectives The purpose of this review was to gather students’ experiences of their resilience journey in an educational setting. Design Systematic review and meta-ethnography of qualitative evidence Review methods This review was reported in accordance with the eMERGe guidelines. The data were analysed with reference to the seven steps of meta-ethnography. The Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation’s Confidence in Evidence from Reviews of Qualitative research (GRADE-CERQual) was used to appraise the quality of the evidence. Results Three themes emerged: (1) resilience associates with internal resources, (2) resilience develops through meaningful relationships and (3) resilience can be instilled by educational institutions. An individual’s trait, outlook and engagement within their social network can influence resilience. The presence and availability of institution-based support services can ease students transition into higher education. Conclusion This review provides a basis for influencing further research and curriculum development in ensuring students’ well-being and success in school.

    In Singapore, many older adults suffer from subsyndromal depression and/or subsyndromal anxiety, which can negatively impact their physical and mental well-being if left untreated. Due to the general public’s reluctance to seek psychological help and the low psychiatrist-to-population ratio in Singapore, this study aims to examine the preliminary efficacy, perceptions, and acceptability of a trained volunteer-led community-based intervention on community-dwelling older adults. Twenty-one participants (control: n = 11; intervention: n = 10) completed the randomized pilot study. A mixed-methods approach (questionnaires, semistructured interviews, examining blood samples, intervention fidelity) was adopted. No significant differences were found between the intervention and the control groups in depression, anxiety, life satisfaction, friendship, and quality of life.     BACKGROUND Mindful parenting is the process of bringing awareness and attention intentionally in a non-reactive and non-judgemental way to a child at any present moment. Parenting mindfulness is believed to influence parenting factors and parental psychological outcomes, child's emotional and behavioural outcomes, and family relationships. However, the efficacy of such interventions on interpersonal mindfulness in parenting and parenting behaviours has received minimal empirical attention. OBJECTIVE This meta-analysis aims to quantitatively evaluate the efficacy of mindful parenting interventions on parenting mindfulness and parenting behaviours. Parenting stress, parents' psychological wellbeing, interpersonal relationships, and child behavioural outcomes were examined secondarily. When meta-analysis was not possible (due to insufficient data in the included studies), the narrative approach was taken to present the findings. DESIGN A systematic review, meta-analysis, and narrative summary. METHODS Six electronic databases (PubMed, Embase, PsycINFO, CINAHL, Scopus, and ProQuest Dissertations and Theses) were systematically searched for articles in the English language from their respective dates of inception to December 2020. Studies involving clinical and non-clinical samples of parents with children or youths aged 24 years and below were included. Only randomised controlled trials were included. Studies were excluded if the mindfulness intervention did not focus on parenting skills training; that is, it focused on childbirth, stress reduction or incorporated other forms of therapy (e.g. cognitive behavioural therapy). Data was synthesised using a random-effects model in RevMan 5.4. The outcomes of primary interest were parenting mindfulness and parenting behaviours. The secondary outcomes were parenting stress, parents' psychological wellbeing, interpersonal relationships, and child behavioural outcomes. RESULTS Eleven studies representing 1,340 parents from six countries were included in the review. No evidence of intervention effect was found for overall parenting mindfulness and overall parenting stress. However, mindful parenting interventions demonstrated a moderate effect size when examining parenting mindfulness scores (standardised mean differences (d)=0.62, 95% CI: 0.11, 1.13, p = 0.02) of parents with non-clinical samples of children. No intervention effect was found for overall parenting stress. Due to insufficient studies and data, findings on parenting behaviours, psychological wellbeing, relationships, and child behaviour were presented narratively. CONCLUSION Mindful parenting interventions are associated with higher parenting mindfulness scores for parents of typically developing children when compared with a control group. The limited studies and mixed results on positive parenting behaviours, parental psychological wellbeing, parental relationship with child and partner, and child behavioural outcomes serve as an impetus for further research.

    Current literature lacks qualitative information derived from distressed fathers. The aim of this study was to explore distressed fathers’ experiences and needs in the early postpartum period. A descriptive qualitative study design was used. The study took place from October 2018 to December 2018 at the tertiary public hospital in Singapore. A purposive sample of 12 distressed Singaporean fathers were interviewed in this study. Audio recorded interviews were conducted face-to-face using a semistructured interview guide and thematic analysis was used to analyze the data. Six themes emerged from the thematic analysis: (a) facing the “real deal,” (b) everyday woes, (c) “losing excitement,” (d) “trying to be strong,” (e) “reality check,” and (f) supplementing help for fathers.     IntroductionSeparation after preterm birth is a major stressor for infants and parents. Skin-to-skin contact (SSC) is a method of care suitable to use in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) to minimise separation between parents and infants. Less separation leads to increased possibilities for parent-infant interaction, provided that the parents’ sleep quality is satisfactory. We aimed to evaluate the effect of continuous SSC on sleep quality and mood in parents of preterm infants born <33 weeks of gestation as well as the quality of parent-infant interaction and salivary cortisol concentrations at the time of discharge.Methods and analysisA randomised intervention study with two arms—intervention versus standard care. Midwives' perceptions on their role within this medicalised environment have not been well documented. An integrative literature review. Primary research articles published in English from the period of 2004 to 2015 were included in this review. The Joanna Briggs Institute's critical appraisal forms were used to appraise the quality of the articles. Data were identified from CINAHL, PubMed, PsycINFO, ScienceDirect, and Scopus. The aims of this study were to examine the predictors of maternal parental self-efficacy and its relationship with social support, postnatal depression (PND), and socio-demographic variables of primiparas during the early postnatal period. A descriptive correlational study design was adopted. The instruments, Perceived Maternal Parental Self-Efficacy, Perinatal Infant Care Social Support, and Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, were used to collect data from a purposive sample of 122 primiparas on the day of discharge (1-3 days post delivery) in a tertiary public hospital in Singapore.     To examine the correlation between maternal parental self-efficacy and social support as well as predictors of self-efficacy in the early postpartum period. Maternal parental self-efficacy is important for mothers' adaptation to motherhood. Lack of support could result in decreased maternal parental self-efficacy in newborn care. Limited studies have focused on maternal parental self-efficacy in the postpartum period in Asia and none in Singapore. A correlational study design was adopted. Data were collected from both primiparas and multiparas during the first to third days postpartum in a public hospital, using the Perceived Maternal Parental Self-efficacy and Perinatal Infant Care Social Support Scales. The data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Maternal parental self-efficacy in newborn care and the level of social support that mothers received were moderate. In terms of the social support subscales, informational and instrumental support was lower than emotional and appraisal support. Informal support from husbands, parents and parents-in-law was the main source of support. A significant correlation was found between maternal parental self-efficacy and total social support in addition to the informational, instrumental and appraisal subscales of functional support. The predictors of maternal parental self-efficacy were parity, social support and maternal age. The findings highlight the predictors and correlates of maternal parental self-efficacy in newborn care and the social support needs of mothers in the early postpartum period. Healthcare professionals could provide more information and instrumental support and involve family members to enhance maternal parental self-efficacy. Because maternal parental self-efficacy and social support in the early postpartum period are interrelated components, they could be assessed to identify at-risk mothers. There is a need to develop perinatal educational programmes to provide culturally competent individualised support to mothers in need.

    Pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period are the stressful transition periods to parenthood. With medicalization of perinatal period, parents feel left out and less confident in their parenthood journey, which may pose serious threats to the family dynamics. Salutogenesis theory offers the potential to influence a shift away from negative health outlooks and outcomes, medicalization of childbirth, toward health promotion and positive well-being focus for maternity care services design and delivery in the future.

    In this chapter, the relation of salutogenesis to maternity care is discussed by giving a critical overview of studies in perinatal care, primarily measuring and promoting parental sense of coherence (SOC) and well-being.An overview is given on salutogenic approaches to neonatal and infant service provision. Important aspects of and salutogenic interventions for parent–child attachment in the first year of a child’s life are examined. Parents’ and caregivers’ relationship with their infants and newborns plays a critical role in shaping the emotional, cognitive, and social development of their child.
