Aim: This study was undertaken to assess the heavy metals contamination level in rice grains (Oryza sativa) from Nasarawa West, Nigeria. Study Design: To estimate the contamination factor, degree of Contamination and Pollution load index of rice samples from Nasarawa west using the world health organization/food and agricultural organization acceptable limits of some toxic Heavy Metals in Food as reference heavy metals concentration. Place and Duration of Study: The research was carried out in the Department of physics, Nasarawa State University, Keffi, from September 2017 to April 2018. Methodology: Fifteen (15) samples each were taken from various locations from the rice fields in Keffi, Kokona, Karu, Nasarawa, and Toto respectively. Rice grain samples were dried in an open air at an ambient temperature to constant weight. Husks were removed. Then, the grain rice samples were pulverized and were passed through a 2.00 mm sieve and stored in closed polyethylene bags for irradiation ...

Biosurfactants are diverse and heterogeneous group of microbial metabolites produced by certain bacteria and fungi that have both hydrophilic and hydrophobic components. This work was aimed at assessing the production, stability and optimization of rhamnolipid biosurfactant production conditions by Enterobacter cloacae AYF1 strain. Biosurfactant production, extraction, purification and optimization of the production conditions were assessed in mineral salt medium followed by stability tests under different ranges of pH, temperatures and salts concentrations using standard procedures. Gas chromatography mass spectroscopy (GC-MS) was used in characterizing the biosurfactant produced. One factor at a time (OFAT) optimization studies revealed that production of biosurfactant by Enterobacter cloacae AYF1 was optimal at 3% carbon source concentration (1.5mg/ml), pH 7.5 (1.7mg/ml), temperature 40ºC (1.8mg/ml) and incubation time of 96hrs (1.96mg/ml). The biosurfactant produced was characte...

This research intends to unveil the presence of radioisotopes in the soil of some mining sites in Nasarawa of Nasarawa state using thermos-scientific interceptor (IdentiFINDER). The work aimed at detecting the presence, types and trust level of radioisotopes. The result showed that, 103Pd and 125I were found in 57% of the total points and the percentage abundance of the detector reached 50-65% indicating that, those radioisotopes are likely found in the area, 109Cd was found in 15% of the total areas. The percentage abundance of the detector for 109Cd shows 50% indicating that, those radioisotopes are likely to be found in the area, 241Am was found in 7% of the total areas. The percentage abundance of the detector for 241Am shows 81% indicating that, those radioisotopes are likely found in the area, 235U was found in 7% of the total points. The percentage abundance of the detector for 235U reaches 57% indicating that, those radioisotopes are likely found in the area, 75Se was found ...

By the turn of the new millennium, precisely during the late nineties, agitations for debt relief by rich nations and other creditor bodies to the low income ones climaxed in the creation of the Highly Indebted Poor Countries Initiative (HIPC). By the onset of the new millennium many poor countries had qualified for the initiative and benefitted from the relief. Debt relief can really free-up State funds for more developmental projects that can improve standard of living, help alleviate poverty and restore stability to the economy. It has however been argued that although the whole idea and process of debt relief was positively influenced by economic and institutional development, governments of creditor nations actually granted debt relief purely on political rather than economic considerations. The idea of path dependence was believed to be the reason behind the debt relief initiative (Freytag and Pehnelt, 2009). Others believe the whole idea behind debt relief is nothing more tha...

Aim: In this study, Aeromonas spp. isolated from soil of local mining sites were assessed for their tolerance to some heavy metals and their capability for its uptake. Materials and Methods: The bacteria were isolated from soil of local mining site in Bagega District of Zamfara State in Nigeria. Maximum Tolerable Concentration (MTC) was employed to screen for metal tolerance of the bacteria to Cadmium (Cd) and Lead (Pb) via Agar Plate Method technique. DNA Extraction and 16sRNA Gene Sequence Analysis was carried out to identify the isolates and sequences were compared to those in NCBI database using Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLAST). Results: Similarly, isolates identified were further characterized and validated by subjecting them to 16sRNA gene sequence analysis. Similarity search indicated a close genetic relatedness to Aeromonas spp. in NCBI database. The Aeromonas spp. Identified showed maximum tolerance to Pb at 27ppm and Cadmium at 24ppm. Bioaccumulation assay carried...

Despite the dependable attempts by researchers in the field of sustainable fuels, engines, and emissions, there is a research gap in the area of variations of biodiesel blend ratios with specific fuel consumption of a compression ignition engine as well as the brake thermal efficiency of engines. Therefore, this article has investigated how the blending ratio of biodiesel from jatropha, neem and cotton seeds oil mixed with petrol diesel affects the brake specific fuel consumption of a compression ignition engine and likewise the brake thermal efficiency of the binary and multi-blends of biodiesel with diesel. Three different biodiesel samples were blended with diesel; the biodiesel was achieved through an alkali transesterification reaction. The blending was done for each biodiesel with diesel alone, and that of mixed biodiesel blends with fossil diesel in a definite ratio. The blends were run on a stationary four-cylinder compression ignition engine with an exhaust analyzer to dete...

Bio fuels based on vegetable oils offer the advantage being a sustainable, annually renewable source of automobile fuel. Despite years of improvement attempts, the key issue in using vegetable oil-based fuels is oxidation stability, stoichiometric point, bio-fuel composition, antioxidants on the degradation and much oxygen with comparing to diesel gas oil. Thus, the improvement of emissions exhausted from diesel engines fueled by biodiesel derived from palm oil is urgently required to meet the future stringent emission regulations. Purpose of this study is to explore how significant the effects of palm oil blending ratio on combustion process that strongly affects the vehicles performance and exhaust emissions. The engine speed was varied from 15003000 rpm, load test condition varied by Dynapack chassis dynamometer from 050% and palm oil blending ratio from 515vol% (B5B15). Increased blends of biodiesel ratio is found to enhance the combustion process, resulting in decreased the HC ...
