We are delighted to welcome you to the 21st Brazilian Symposium on Multimedia and the Web -- WebMedia'15. WebMedia'15 is an annual symposium sponsored by the Brazilian Computer Society (SBC -- Sociedade Brasileira de Computacao) in the fields of Multimedia, Hypermedia and Web. WebMedia's 21st edition is held from October 27th to October 30th, 2015 in Manaus, capital of Amazonas State -- Brazil. WebMedia'15 is organized by the Group of Treatment of Information (GTI) from the Federal University of Amazonas (UFAM) and has many other sponsors and supporters including FAPEAM, CGI.br, NIC.br, CNPq, RNP, and W3C. The central feature of the symposium, since its inception, is its Technical Program. The symposium's technical program is composed by technical sessions with full papers, short papers, short courses, and workshops (Thesis and Dissertation Workshop, Tools and Applications Workshop and Undergraduate Research Workshop). WebMedia'15 proceedings include 21 full papers and 17 short papers. These papers were selected from 61 full paper submissions and 31 short paper submissions, for acceptance rates of 34% and 55%, respectively. The Symposium's Program Committee worked very hard to select papers that will be presented and published from among many submissions of excellent quality. We thank all the submitting authors for their research efforts and for their submissions and congratulate those who had their work accepted. In addition to the Technical Program, this year's symposium features a diverse range of activities including Panels, Keynote Speakers, and Courses included on the First International Amazon School on Web and Research Technologies (WeRT) that will take place along with Webmedia. Attendants of Webmedia will have free access to courses of WeRT, depending on space availability. Additionally, the conference will hold the II Workshop on Video Collaboration, promoted by Brazilian National Research and Educational Network (Rede Nacional de Ensino e Pesquisa -- RNP). Finally, we pay homage to Professor Luiz Fernando Gomes Soares, who left us this year. He deeply contributed to the Brazilian scientific computing community, and particularly to the Webmedia community. No words can express his sudden loss. It is in his memory that we hold the twenty-first edition of the event he helped create.

This paper presents a framework for the creation of a knowledge database on QoE. The QoE Analyzer framework enables the simulation of degradations in video playout and also the application of a survey to evaluate the impact of degradations on the user Quality of Experience. In order to show the versatility of the framework, an instantiation of the framework and its application to a group of 62 users was carried out. The framework was implemented using the JavaScript language and, through it, it was possible to show the impacts of degradation patterns on the user experience. The framework was released under GNU GPLv3 license and is available in github (https://github.com/hugoschroterl/qoe-analyser).

Resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 school year has been defined by remote online teaching, taking place in learning management systems and/or in webconference services. Considering this scenario, the aim of this paper is to present teaching strategies for remote synchronous classes in webconference systems so that they are managed in order to encourage greater student engagement, in the perspective of active collaborative learning. The strategies were developed based on the analysis of data generated by the collection of testimonies, the application of questionnaires with teachers of basic education and higher education and the adoption of a class log of the use of three webconference platforms in a postgraduate course, in the current pandemic year. We discuss what changes when it is not possible to teach presentially, but with the use of web conferencing platforms and their functionalities, as well as of different digital tools that can help the teacher stimulate studen...

Mobile and portable technologies frequently adopt heterogeneous multimedia networks. In this context it was designed scalable video encoders where a scalable video stream is transmitted containing a base layer (responsible by the minimum video requirements) and additional enhancement layers (each one improving the video characteristics). Recently MPEG and ITU-T groups published the scalable HEVC standard specification. However, the whole implementation of this encoder demands large computational resources and memory size. The current work presents a detailed analysis of this technology and its internal modules, indicating a simplified configuration that reach a tradeoff among low latency time and encoding quality. Comparison results point to a fast and low complexity solution with small video quality loss.

Inside a video encoder, the technique of motion estimation (or motion prediction) is one of the most relevant algorithms, which is particularly responsible by the consumption of most expensive portion of the global video encoder computational processing costs. The current paper explores the use of a Cell microprocessor as platform to the implementation of a dedicated parallel H.264 motion estimation solution. The proposed algorithm has been designed in order to operate simultaneously over six distinct regions of the same reference video frame. The obtained results points to significant improvements.

CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVE: Type 2 diabetes is a chronic disease associated with a wide range of serious health complications that have a major impact on overall health. The aims here were to develop and validate predictive models for detecting undiagnosed diabetes using data from the Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil) and to compare the performance of different machine-learning algorithms in this task. DESIGN AND SETTING: Comparison of machine-learning algorithms to develop predictive models using data from ELSA-Brasil. METHODS: After selecting a subset of 27 candidate variables from the literature, models were built and validated in four sequential steps: (i) parameter tuning with tenfold cross-validation, repeated three times; (ii) automatic variable selection using forward selection, a wrapper strategy with four different machinelearning algorithms and tenfold cross-validation (repeated three times), to evaluate each subset of variables; (iii) error estimation of model parameters with tenfold cross-validation, repeated ten times; and (iv) generalization testing on an independent dataset. The models were created with the following machine-learning algorithms: logistic regression, artificial neural network, naïve Bayes, K-nearest neighbor and random forest. RESULTS: The best models were created using artificial neural networks and logistic regression. These achieved mean areas under the curve of, respectively, 75.24% and 74.98% in the error estimation step and 74.17% and 74.41% in the generalization testing step. CONCLUSION: Most of the predictive models produced similar results, and demonstrated the feasibility of identifying individuals with highest probability of having undiagnosed diabetes, through easily-obtained clinical data.CONTEXTO E OBJETIVO: Diabetes tipo 2 é uma doença crônica associada a graves complicações de saúde, causando grande impacto na saúde global.

To deal with the massive traffic produced by video applications, mobile operators rely on offloading technologies such as Small Cells, Content Delivery Networks and, shortly, Cloud Edge and 5G Device to Device communications. Although these techniques are fundamental for improving network efficiency, they produce a multitude of paths onto which the user traffic can be forwarded. Thus, a critical problem arises about how to handle the increasing video traffic while managing the interplay between infrastructure optimization and the user's Quality of Experience (QoE). Solving this problem is remarkably difficult, and recent investigations do not consider the large-scale context of mobile operator networks. To address this issue, we present a novel QoE-aware path deployment scheme for large-scale SDN-based mobile networks. The scheme relies on both a polynomial-time algorithm for composing multiple QoS metrics and a scalable QoS to QoE translation strategy. Considering real mobile operator network and video traffic traces, we show that the proposed algorithm outperformed state-of-the-art approaches by reducing impaired videos in aggregate MOS by at least 37% and lowering accumulated video stall length four times.

Currently, even considering the recent advances in the microprocessor power computing, high definition multimedia applications still require very complex demands to allow real-time video encoding. Particularly, modern video encoders (MPEG/ITU H.26x series) depend of complex and computationally exhaustive motion estimation algorithms to identify and remove temporal redundancy among consecutive (or not) frames inside a video sequence, as strategy to reduce the final compressed bit rate. In fact, the mechanism of block matching can be considered the most critical encoder algorithm, in terms of computational demands, like it is responsible for searching, in distinct reference frames, for similar pixel blocks related with each one of the input image blocks. The number of required block comparisons for high definition videos represents a clear and important restriction for real-time implementations. This paper introduces an improved strategy of block matching method, which was optimized for multiprocessing execution, mainly focusing in implementation over general purpose graphical processing unit technologies, as the NVidia CUDA® GPUs. The improved motion estimation solution was implemented in the JSVM reference code (scalable version of H.264 video encoder), when it was registered a speed up gain of more than 350% in average for 4CIF videos.

Meeting rooms, as well as classrooms, can be transformed in multimedia spaces that amplify collaboration and education. Computers, projectors, large displays, videoconference systems and wi-fi networks are examples of Information Technologies infrastructures commonly installed in modern rooms. However, the investment to transform a traditional classroom in a digital learning space must be spent efficiently to justify the invested resources. The cost of any physical space depends on how often it is used. For example, a US$100,000.00 regular classroom can cost more than a US$500,000.00 one. How? Suppose the cheaper room is used eight hours a month, while the more expensive one is used eighty hours a month. Over five years (or 60 months), the per-hour cost of the cheaper room will be US$100,000.00 / (60 * 8) = US$208.33, while the per-hour cost of the more expensive one will be US$500,000.00 / (60 * 80) = US$104.17, i.e., half the cost of the first. The bottom line is that keeping an i...

Recent multimedia applications demand very high performance to support real-time video encoding. More specifically the mechanism of image block matching is one of the most critical encoder algorithms in terms of computational costs. It is responsible by searching for similar pixel macroblocks when comparing the current macroblock with others in reference images. The SAD (Sum of Absolute Differences) calculation is largelly used as comparation method in different block matching algorithms. This paper purposes a new strategy of SAD method implementation optimized to modern DSP microprocessor architectures like IBM Cell®. Practical results of our proposed method in a H.264/AVC encoder indicate a gain of more than eigth times for each computing unit when compared with original reference code performance.

Interactive Digital Television is mostly a matter of entertainment for developed countries, but bears great potential to narrow the digital divide in developing countries. The television’s return channel might become the family’s gate to the Information Society. For this to come true, however, digital receivers and return channel technologies must reach cost levels that enable mass penetration. In this essay, we discuss design decisions around the receiver that can drastically impact the success of interactive digital television in the developing world.

The amount of video content that is available on the web grows at each instant. This fact implicates in an important issue -- video content overload. One way to treat such problem consists on the use of recommender systems. In this sense, this paper proposes a method to enhance the accuracy of the predictions given by video recommender systems by the use of Segments of Interest (SOI). Based on the premise that users tend to like particular segments of a video more than the entire video, and that they are able to mark these segments, these can be used to identify similar people, i.e. the ones who have similar interests about videos. This similarity can be used to enhance the accuracy of the ratings predictions of traditional collaborative video recommender systems. To evaluate this approach, an experimental evaluation was performed. The results showed that the accuracy improvement is directly related with the level of participation of people marking SOI. Thus, as more people collabor...

OWD is becoming increasingly important nowadays, as SLA agreements use it as a parameter to ensure QoS levels. However, its measurement is still a much debated topic due to the difficulty in the clock synchronization process. The paper approaches a new methodology to measure OWD, using NTP protocol with virtual clocks and bigger packets. This approach works over a measurement tool developed by the authors, called Netmetric, and is flexible enough to be applied in full-mesh networks, without lack in clock consistency during concurrent NTP synchronizations. The proposed method was validated using NTCUns simulator, tested over Vivo/Telefonica's 3G Network, and compared to OWAMP.

This paper presents FeedC, a new method for RTT (Round Trip Time) calculus and feedback control for large scale multimedia transmissions. Simultaneous multimedia transmissions to a large number of users, such as IPTV, still have scale problems, due to the need of replicating the flow for each receiver on unicast. This can be avoided by using multicast; however, due to traffic equity rules on the Internet, the multicast flow must be equivalent to the TCP flow. To calculate this equivalent flow, there are several mechanisms; their cores are the RTT calculus and feedback control, using a different set of algorithms to feedback control and RTT calculation known of literature, added a method for cooperation of receivers in the same local network. This paper presents a new mechanism, and the results obtained from experiments on a real long distance network show it is the most efficient among the analyzed ones to a large number of receivers.

Emergent videoconference applications can be found in a large set of products like videophones terminals, 3G cell phones and multimedia live chat sofwares. This paper presents the modeling of an architecture for realtime videoconference applications which can be adopted in Personal Computers and also in embedded systems. Some practical experiments have been performed over a real DSP hardware platform in order to validate the proposed architecture. 1. General Information Modern real time multimedia systems supporting inte ractive transmission of audio and video can be used to reduce real distances through the use of virtual meeting environments (Synnes, 2001). Particularly videoconf erence systems must respect some important constraints, like guarantee of a constant d ta flow in the transmission channel (fidelity), automatic audio and video synchronizati on (fidelity) and small end-to-end delay (Schall, 2006). All these dependences can be considered as temporal constraints. Eventuall...

Mconf is an open source, distributed, scalable and federated global web conferencing system, interoperable with SIP and mobile devices. The base for the system is an open source application called “Mconf: Multi conferencing with interoperable access for web and mobile devices”. This open source application explores a global approach to service provision. In June 2012 the Mconf Global Network [Roesler, 2012a] was launched, and by September 2013 had attained a global geographic distribution, with 23 servers distributed among three continents and about 1,500 communities and 5,500 users served worldwide through 10 web portals. This cooperating global network forms an open global web conferencing network that can support thousands of users daily. The problem addressed in this paper is: how this open multi conferencing technology can enable an open global academic web conferencing network. The answer is given by examples of R&D results of the experimental phase, and by explanations of: 1....

The Multipresence system performs multi-technology videoconferencing, that is, it allows the interoperation of various technologies and devices such as: Telepresence rooms in high definition (until Full-HD); Ultra-telepresence room (4K); Sharing of content (images, texts, applications); Legacy videoconferencing systems (SIP standard); software application installed on the personal computer; Web conferencing (via web browser); Mobile devices and SIP phones. UFRGS University works in the coordination of the technological development of the Working Group GT-Multipresença in partnership with RNP (National Research and Education Network) and with Mconf Tecnologia Ltda. The project is in its fourth year of development, with functional prototypes very stable, and already been used for transmission and interaction in robotic surgeries. The objective of this article is to disseminate this technology as a drivi...

This paper presents the Slim&Healthy system, focusing on the control of obesity in adults and aiming at the adoption of healthy habits. The system consists of two parts: a) an Android application on the client mobile device; b) an application on a server. The paper integrates different theories to increase user motivation, such as gamification, social networks, design heuristics for mobile devices and behavioral theories. It was performed an evaluation of the application interface through a questionnaire adherent to standards ISO 9241-11 and ABNT ISO/IEC 25062:2011, and the results are presented for discussion.

The presented tool is a fully virtualized videoconferencing MCU (Multipoint Control Unit) system using the standard SIP (Session Initiation Protocol). The proposed tool works in the cloud in a scalable way, with low deployment and maintenance costs. In addition, the proposed tool is more than an MCU, functioning as a universal framework for media forwarding.

The purpose of this paper is to present advances in the Mconf web conferencing system to support transparent interoperability with room videoconferencing equipment (known as endpoints), Multipresence system, and Phone@RNP. The system can behave as SFU (Switching Forwarding Unit) or MCU (Multipoint Control Unit), making decisions about the best signal to send to each destination. The following main benefits can be cited: 1) Improving user interaction in the use of such systems, so that it simply enters the portal “Video Collaboration Service”, and the system make the necessary adaptations to obtain the best user experience; 2) Have a single MCU + SFU service, savings resources, as it concentrates programmers on the same code.

The use of videoconferencing technology for health systems has the potential to increase the number of patients treated while decreasing cost and allowing distributed local consultation facilities close to the target communities, minimizing the need for transportation and minimizing waiting times. One such initiative is the Teleoftalmo-RS videocolaboration program where ophthalmologic consultations are performed. In this paper, the development of an auxiliary tool to help expedite the diagnosis of cataracts in such a system is presented. This work is also part of the ongoing RNP and Microsoft Challenge: Artificial Intelligence R&D.
