Purpose: The paper aims to explore how financial and ESG reporting have changed under the influence of rising economic and business uncertainty and how these changes may influence corporate accountability. Methodology/approach: The main research method is the extensive literature review. For inference, the methods of analysis and synthesis are used. Findings: The paper is based on positive and normative approaches. The positive approach reveals the key corporate reporting changes in times of uncertainty, analyzed in the light of the legitimacy theory and stakeholder theory. The paper indicates how different levels of uncertainty (economic policy uncertainty, business uncertainty, accounting uncertainty, audit uncertainty, uncertainty in ESG performance, and ESG assurance) can influence corporate reports and thus cause a significant change in corporate ac-countability. The proposed normative approach assumes that corporate reporting will become more accountability-based, depicting th...

Legitimacy theory helps to understand the organization’s behavior in implementing, developing and communicating its social responsibility policies. The main assumption of legitimacy theory is fulfilling the organization’s social contract, which enables the recognition of its objectives. This in turn requires the adoption of a CSR strategy affecting various areas of activity, including in particular management accounting. The paper draws arguments from literature to identify the role of the legitimacy theory in management accounting research. The article’s thesis is that sustainable management accounting is a valuable tool of legitimacy for a socially responsible company. The paper is structured as follows: after the introduction, the second section provides the background for the research study; it is a literature review concerning the way in which accounting legitimizes the status of a socially responsible corporate. The third section of the paper presents sustainable management ac...

This paper presents the conclusions from analyzing the reliability of integrated reporting in the light of the strategic and information-related paradigm of accounting. The study demonstrates the reliability in the light of international standards that standardize integrated reporting, according to which there is a need for the improvement of credibility. As a key form of improving the reliability of integrated reporting the author indicates an internal and external verification of financial data and non-financial disclosure, both based on accountability account related to a company’s responsibility. The purpose of the study was achieved by employing pertinent research methods, including in particular a critical analysis of scholarly literature and the method of analogy. The study is axiomatic in nature, based on fundamental accounting theory assumptions.

Nowadays, the speed of changes in practical activities and scientific research in the field of sustainable development has not yet allowed to clearly indicate the role of accounting in this area. Therefore, the main goal of the paper is to present sustainability accounting in the light of positive and normative accounting theory and to propose its conceptual framework as a normative solution. Positive theories allow the author to use inductive reasoning and thus indicates the state of accounting development (opportunities and risks) in sustainable business, identifying three key gaps: theoretical, empirical and methodical. In turn, by means of normative theories, on the basis of deductive reasoning, the paper recognizes the desired directions and normatives of sustainability accounting changes. The research methodology is based on theoretical and methodological triangulation, using descriptive and comparative analysis. The main findings of the research focus on an original normative...

The third section of the paper presents sustainable management accounting (SMA) as a tool for legitimacy in a socially responsible company. And the last section is dedicated to the presentation of SMA development directions. On the basis of a normative approach, it presents the author’s proposal of treatment of sustainable management accounting as a tool for sustainable business legitimacy.

ABSTRACTManuscript Type: EmpiricalResearch Question: Is the relationship between corporate governance mechanisms and corporate social responsibility (CSR) contingent on satisfaction with firm performance?Research Findings/Insights: Our results suggest that while effective corporate governance discourages both positive (proactive stakeholder relationship management) and negative (violation of regulations and standards) CSR, higher slack and positive attainment discrepancy lead to higher positive and lower negative CSR,

The automation of manufacturing processes as a result of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, rendered faster under the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic, leads to a question as to whether small enterprises, and in particular microenterprises, will still be financially self-sufficient. The literature on the subject so far has not provided an answer to this question, and limited access to financial data concerning microenterprises, as well as data on the robotification of labour in these companies, leads to this problem becoming a research niche. Therefore, this paper aims to assess the attractiveness of the operation of microenterprises that provide financial advisory services in the situation of replacing human labour with robots. For that purpose, we performed a simulation of the state of the microenterprise before and after introducing the robotification of services, taking into account the extra tax on robotification. The findings indicate that anticipating the improvement of fina...

Risk disclosures contribute to financial stability by providing stakeholders with a better understanding of companies’ risk exposures and risk management practices. Presently, corporate risk has been accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the level of disclosure varies across industries, companies, and organizations. Due to the strategic importance of the energy industry, the paper aims to assess COVID-19-related risk disclosure in the biggest electricity companies in Central and Eastern European countries, and to identify the main determinants of the disclosure. For this purpose, risk disclosure was assessed based on publicly available data disclosed by the 10 biggest public electricity companies operating in this region. Our findings indicate that factors such as the company’s size, leverage, and profitability do not significantly affect COVID-19-related risk disclosure in financial reports; nevertheless, COVID-19 risk disclosure in non-financial reports is significantly correl...
