    Historical trends in trace element deposition were analyzed using herbaria specimens. We determined Al, Fe, Mg, Mn, Ca, Na, P, K, S, As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn contents in leaves of eight specimens collected in 1941. To assess changes, we collected the same plants from a botanical garden in 2012. The concentrations of major elements showed large species variability. However, temporal trends were predominately detected for heavy metals. The Cd, Ni and Cr contents in the 2012 leaves were 10, 13 and 16 times higher, respectively, than in 1941. Urban activities have substantially raised the levels of these metals in urban atmospheres due to changes in human activities over 70 years of urban growth. Nevertheless, Pb has decreased (-126%) in recent decades thanks to controlled lead fuel combustion. In short, metal deposition trend to increase Cr, Ni and Cd levels.

    This study compares heavy metals contents and the main edaphic parameters in greenhouse soils from the W Almería region one of the most productive agricultural systems in Europe, with agricultural soils (arable soils) in western Andalusia, SW Spain. Heavy metals input in agricultural soils mainly occur through pesticides and phytosanitary control products. The hazardousness of the studied elements (Cr, Ni, Pb, Cu, Zn and Cd) is particularly relevant in soils used for intensive greenhouse farming where such agricultural practices, which centre on maximising production, end up with products that finally enter the human food chain directly. Here we explore a total of 199 greenhouse soils and 142 arable soils, representing two scales of variation in this Mediterranean area.     Very little information is available about Hg and Cr evolution in greenhouse soils. This paper presents the results of determining Hg and Cr in greenhouse soils in a semi-arid region in the southern Iberian Peninsula (Almería, Spain), and assessing the enrichment level and the Potential Ecological Risk Index (PERI) according to crop age. Hakanson’s approach was used to evaluate the PERI. To investigate the behaviour of Hg and Cr in greenhouse soils over time, samples were grouped into values in soils for blocks according to crop age: 0 years, 5–10 years, 10–20 years, more than 20 years. The results showed that 74% of GS exceeded the obtained background level (37.1 μg kg −1 ) for Hg, with 43% (48.9 mg kg −1 ) for Cr. Temporal patterns indicated that these elements are accumulating in greenhouse soils and this trend was very significant for Hg. After more than 20 intensive crop-farming years, concentrations and the PERI had clearly increased. Although the ecological risk was moderate, our observations suggest that the farming practices performed in the last 35 years have allowed these metals to accumulate. In fact, the 15% of the studied soils presented a considerable potential risk and were the soils that had been used longer.

    Numerosos estudios ponen de relieve que la aplicacion de enmiendas organicas al suelo mejora sus funciones y su calidad; no obstante se requiere optimizar su manejo para evitar efectos nocivos sobre el sistema suelo-planta. En este trabajo se evaluo el efecto de la aplicacion de compost obtenido con lodo de depuradora y residuo del arroz sobre distintos parametros del suelo. El estudio fue llevado a cabo en un Luvisol calcico dedicado al cultivo de citricos situado en Valencia. Se seleccionaron ocho parcelas experimentales aplicando, por duplicado, las siguientes dosis de compost 0, 6, 12 y 36 Mg ha-1. Se muestreo el horizonte Ap1 (0-10 cm) y el Ap2 (10-20 cm) y se realizo un seguimiento durante siete meses. En las muestras de suelo se determinaron los siguientes parametros: pH, MOS, nitrogeno mineral, nitrogeno amoniacal, nitrogeno total, acidos humicos y fulvicos. Los resultados mostraron que el uso de compost disminuyo el pH, e incremento su contenido de MOS, nitrogeno total y sustancias humicas a medida que se aumento la dosis de enmienda aplicada. La dosis mas efectiva fue de 36 Mg ha-1. Estos resultados indican la viabilidad de la utilizacion de este tipo de compost como enmienda organica para suelos calcareos de texturas finas.

    Abstract Tailings usually provide an unfavorable substrate for plant growth because of their multi-stress environment. Plants growing on naturally metal-enriched soils are of particular interest in this perspective, since they are genetically tolerant to high metal concentrations and have an excellent adaptation to extreme conditions. Soil and plant samples were taken in Peru, at a polymetallic mine (mainly Ag, Pb and Cu) in Cajamarca Province, Hualgayoc district. Top soils (0–20 cm) were analyzed for physical and chemical properties by standard methods. Total As, Cu, Pb and Zn concentrations in top soils were determined by ICP–OES. Similar metals in plants were analyzed separately (aerial and root system) by ICP–MS. Translocation Factor (TF) and Shoot Accumulation Factor (SAF) were determined to assess the tolerance strategies developed by these species and to evaluate their potential for phytoremediation purposes. The non-polluted soils had near neutral pH (6.8 ± 0.1), a great content of organic carbon (42 ± 4.0 g kg − 1 ) and a silt loamy texture. Soil and plant samples were taken at four locations (CA1, CA2, CA3, CA4) as well as the local reference topsoil (CA0). The range of total soil values in mg kg − 1 is as follows: As 280–1029; Cu 256–2070; Pb 3992–16,060 and Zn 11,550–28,059, respectively. Unusual elevated concentrations of Pb (over 1000 mg kg − 1 ) and TF greater than one were detected in shoots of six different plants species ( Ageratina sp., Achyrocline alata (Kunth) DC., Cortaderia hapalotricha Pilg., Epilobium denticulatum Ruiz & Pav., Taraxacum officinale Weber and Trifolium repens Walter ). Ageratina sp and E . denticulatum also showed elevated concentrations of Zn (over 10,000 mg kg − 1 ) and TF greater than one in some studied locations. However, the SAF was smaller than one. Controlled-environment studies must be performed to definitively confirm the Pb hyperaccumulation character of the cited plant species.

    This study determines total levels of three (Cd, Pb and Ni) potentially toxic trace elements in western Almería (Spain) greenhouse surface soil horizons using microwave digestion; it establishes the geochemical baseline concentration, and it investigates possible relationships between soil properties and elemental concentrations. The results show that the soil concentration of these heavy metals is lower than mentioned in the European and Spanish normative, but they are higher than those reported by other authors working on agricultural soils. The obtained geochemical baseline concentrations (mg kg(-1)) were: Cd 0.4-0.8, Pb 2.5-89.9 and Ni 16.1-30.7. Using the upper baseline criterion, 88% of greenhouse soils have relatively higher content of heavy metals because of their Cd, Pb and Ni concentration. Moreover, soil properties are related to heavy metals contents suggesting that among Cd, Pb and Ni have a similar origin and those total metal concentrations are controlled primarily by soil compositions.

    We studied the relative value of natural habitats, river and coastal wetlands, and artificial habitats, irrigation canal and ponds, for the conservation of an endangered fish, Iberian toothcarp, in its southernmost area of distribution, characterised by agricultural intensification. Our results show that the bulk of the population of the Iberian toothcarp is concentrated in irrigation ponds. Natural habitats sustained null or impoverished subpopulations, and individuals showed signs of low metabolic activity.

    The vegetation growing on special types of rocks has long attracted the attention of botanists and ecologists. In this respect, interest in serpentine soils has led to the publication of a number of monographs on their flora and vegetation. The high levels of heavy metals, in particular of Ni, and the low proportion of Ca/Mg are generally held responsible for the severe restrictions limiting flora development on this kind of rocks. Although researchers have also studied other types of unusual bedrocks such as gypsum outcrops, little work has been done on dolomites. This is surprising because dolomites share certain features with serpentines (they are both rocks rich in Mg). We hypothesized that, as stream food-webs are highly dependent on riparian subsidies, climate change might alter PFTs to the point of weakening terrestrial-aquatic linkages. We conducted a gradient analysis to assess the relative effects of climate, soil and riparian physical characteristics on PFTs. If PFTs differ significantly in leaf traits and climate had major influences on them, we could assume space-for-time interchangeability forward in time to predict leaf traits changes, and consequences for stream food webs under future climate change scenarios.
