We discuss dissipative systems in Quantum Field Theory by studying the canonical quantization of the damped harmonic oscillator (dho). We show that the set of states of the system splits into unitarily inequivalent representations of the canonical commutation relations. The irreversibility of time evolution is expressed as tunneling among the unitarily inequivalent representations. Canonical quantization is shown to lead to time dependent SU(1,1) coherent states. We derive the exact action for the dho from the path integral formulation of the quantum Brownian motion developed by Schwinger and by Feynman and Vernon. The doubling of the phase-space degrees of freedom for dissipative systems is related to quantum noise effects. Finally, we express the time evolution generator of the dho in terms of operators of the $q$-deformation of the Weyl-Heisenberg algebra. The $q$-parameter acts as a label for the unitarily inequivalent representations.

In this paper we discuss the ontology of flavor states of oscillating neutrinos. While an heuristic approach to this subject, experimentally successful in the high energy regime, is generally adopted, a logically consistent definition of flavor states describing neutrinos produced and detected in weak processes is still desirable and essential from a theoretical perspective. Here we briefly review basic facts and present some arguments which suggest that the definition of flavor states as eigenstates of flavor charges is the most reasonable one.

The quantum statistical dynamics of a position coordinate x coupled to a reservoir requires theoretically two copies of the position coordinate within the reduced density matrix description. One coordinate moves forward in time while the other coordinate moves backward in time. It is shown that quantum dissipation induces, in the plane of the forward and backward motions, a noncommutative geometry. The noncommutative geometric plane is a consequence of a quantum dissipation induced phase interference which is closely analogous to the Aharanov-Bohm effect.

Background and aim: Mental stress represents a pivotal factor in cardiovascular diseases. The mechanism by which stress produces its deleterious ischemic effects is still under study but some of the most explored pathways are inflammation, endothelial function and balancing of the thrombotic state. In this scenario, von Willebrand factor (vWF) is a plasma glycoprotein best known for its crucial hemostatic role, also acting as key regulatory element of inflammation, being released by the activated vascular endothelium. Antistress techniques seem to be able to slow down inflammation. As we have recently verified how the practice of the Relaxation Response (RR), which counteracts psychological stress, causes favorable changes in some inflammatory genes’ expressions, neurotransmitters, hormones, cytokines and inflammatory circulating microRNAs with coronary endothelial function improvement, we aimed to verify a possible change even in serum levels of vWF. Experimental procedure: We meas...

The quantum deformation of the Hopf algebra describes the skeleton of quantum field theory, namely its characterizing feature consisting in the existence of infinitely many unitarily inequivalent representations of the canonical commutation relations. From this we derive the thermal properties of quantum field theory, with the entropy playing the role of the generator of the non-unitary time evolution. The entanglement of the quantum vacuum appears to be robust against interaction with the environment: on cannot ``unknot the knots"in the infinite volume limit.

In this paper we suggest that in the framework of the Category Theory it is possible to demonstrate the mathematical and logical dual equivalence between the category of the q-deformed Hopf Coalgebras and the category of the q-deformed Hopf Algebras in QFT, interpreted as a thermal field theory. Each pair algebra-coalgebra characterizes, indeed, a QFT system and its mirroring thermal bath, respectively, so to model dissipative quantum systems persistently in far-from-equilibrium conditions, with an evident significance also for biological sciences. The q-deformed Hopf Coalgebras and the q-deformed Hopf Algebras constitute two dual categories because characterized by the same functor T , related with the Bogoliubov transform, and by its contravariant application T , respectively. The q-deformation parameter, indeed, is related to the Bogoliubov angle, and it is effectively a thermal parameter. Therefore, the different values of q identify univocally, and then label, the vacua appeari...

Quantum electrodynamics (QED) produces a picture of liquid water as a mixture of a low density coherent phase and an high density non-coherent phase. Consequently, the Archimedes principle prescribes that, within a gravitational field, liquid water should be made up, at surface, mainly of the coherent fraction, which becomes a cage where the gas-like non-coherent fraction is trapped, acquiring a non-vanishing pressure (vapor tension). Therefore, it is possible to probe the QED picture by observing the behavior of liquid water under reduced gravity conditions. The floating water bridge could be a useful test model.

We show that the Bessel equation can be cast, by means of suitable transformations, into a system of two damped/amplified parametric oscillator equations. The relation with the group contraction mechanism is analyzed and the breakdown of loop-antiloop symmetry due to group contraction manifests itself as violation of time-reversal symmetry. A preliminary discussion of the relation between some infinite dimensional loop-algebras, such as the Virasoro-like algebra, and the Euclidean algebras e(2) and e(3) is also presented.

In the engagement of the brain with its environment, large-scale neural interactions in brain dynamics create a mesoscopic order parameter, which is evaluated by measuring brain waves (electrocorticogram, ECoG). Such large-scale interactions emerge from the background activity of the brain that is sustained by mutual excitation in cortical populations and manifest in spatiotemporal patterns of neural activity. Band pass filtering reveals beats in ECoG power that recur at theta rates (3−7 Hz) as null spikes in log 10 power. The order parameter transiently approaches zero, and the microscopic activity is both disordered and symmetric. As the null spikes terminate, the order parameter resurges and imposes a mesoscopic spatial pattern of ECoG amplitude modulation that then governs the microscopic gamma activity and retrieves the memory of a stimulus. The brain waves reveal a spatial pattern of phase modulation in the form of a cone. The dissipative many-body model of brain dynamics desc...

In this paper I discuss the formation of topological defects in quantum field theory and the relation between fractals and coherent states. The study of defect formation is particularly useful in the understanding of the same mathematical structure of quantum field theory with particular reference to the processes of non-equilibrium symmetry breaking. The functional realization of fractals in terms of the q-deformed algebra of coherent states is also presented. From one side, this sheds some light on the dynamical formation of fractals. From the other side, it also exhibits the fractal nature of coherent states, thus opening new perspectives in the analysis of those phenomena where coherent states play a relevant role. The global nature of fractals appears to emerge from local deformation processes and fractal properties are incorporated in the framework of the theory of entire analytical functions.

I review the dissipative quantum model of brain and discuss its recent developments related with the role of entanglement, quantum noise and chaos. Some comments on con- sciousness in the frame of the dissipative model are also presented. Dissipation seems to account for the medial character of consciousness, for its being in the present (the Now), its un-dividable unity, its intrinsic subjectivity (autonomy). Finally, essential features of a conscious artificial device, if ever one can construct it, are briefly commented upon, also in relation to a device able to exhibit mistakes in its behavior. The name I give to such a hypothetical device is Spartacus.

We study the canonical quantization of the damped harmonic oscillator by resorting to the realization of the q-deformation of the Weyl-Heisenberg algebra (q-WH) in terms of finite difference operators. We relate the damped oscillator hamiltonian to the q-WH algebra and to the squeezing generator of coherent states theory. We also show that the q-WH algebra is the natural candidate to study thermal field theory. The well known splitting, in the infinite volume limit, of the space of physical states into unitarily inequivalent representations of the canonical commutation relations is briefly commented upon in relation with the von Neumann theorem in quantum mechanics and with q-WH algebra.

In recent years, central components of a new approach to linguistics, the Minimalist Program (MP) have come closer to physics. Features of the Minimalist Program, such as the unconstrained nature of recursive Merge, the operation of the Labeling Algorithm that only operates at the interface of Narrow Syntax with the Conceptual-Intentional and the Sensory-Motor interfaces, the difference between pronounced and un-pronounced copies of elements in a sentence and the build-up of the Fibonacci sequence in the syntactic derivation of sentence structures, are directly accessible to representation in terms of algebraic formalism. Although in our scheme linguistic structures are classical ones, we find that an interesting and productive isomorphism can be established between the MP structure, algebraic structures and many-body field theory opening new avenues of inquiry on the dynamics underlying some central aspects of linguistics.

The formalism of Quantum Mechanics is based by definition on conserving probabilities and thus there is no room for the description of dissipative systems in Quantum Mechanics. The treatment of time-irreversible evolution (the arrow of time) is therefore ruled out by definition in Quantum Mechanics. In Quantum Field Theory it is, however, possible to describe time-irreversible evolution by resorting to the existence of infinitely many unitarily inequivalent representations of the canonical commutation relations (ccr). In this paper I review such a result by discussing the canonical quantization of the damped harmonic oscillator (dho), a prototype of dissipative systems. The irreversibility of time evolution is expressed as tunneling among the unitarily inequivalent representations. The exact action for the dho is derived in the path integral formalism of the quantum Brownian motion developed by Schwinger and by Feynman and Vernon. We comment on the paper ``Remarks on flavor-neutrino propagators and oscillation formulae'' [Phys. Rev. D64, 013011 (2001)]. We show that the conclusions presented in that paper do not apply to the exact field theoretical oscillation formulae obtained in the BV formalism (for three flavors) which are free from the dependence on arbitrary mass parameters, account for CP violation and reduce to the usual quantum mechanical (Pontecorvo) three flavor oscillation formulae in the relativistic limit.

Within the frame of the dissipative quantum model of brain we present a theoretical analysis of brain-mind visual experiences made during dreaming, meditation, caused by the action of psychoactive substances, or under conditions of low degree of openness of the brain on its environment. The brain-mind visual experiences we refer to are visual activities not connected to the actual seeing as in the awake state. The movie-like sequences of images in brain-mind visual experiences have their origin in the criticality of the low level of openness of the brain dynamics. They are described as trajectories through the memory space constructed during the subject perceptual experiences. Truthfulness and realism felt in brain-mind visual experiences find a description in terms of the entanglement between the doubled degrees of freedom in the dissipative model. We conjecture that brain-mind visual experiences may be present also in subjects under anesthesia, in some coma states and in general u...

Some bacterial and viral DNA sequences have been found to induce low frequency electromagnetic waves in high aqueous dilutions. This phenomenon appears to be triggered by the ambient electromagnetic background of very low frequency. We discuss this phenomenon in the framework of quantum field theory. A scheme able to account for the observations is proposed. The reported phenomenon could allow to develop highly sensitive detection systems for chronic bacterial and viral infections.

A significant chapter of the short history of formal philosophy is related with the notion and the theory of the so-called “Social Welfare Functions (SWFs)”, as a substantial component of the “social choice theory”. One of the main uses of SWFs is aimed, indeed, at representing coherent patterns (effectively, algebraic structures of relations) of individual and collective choices/preferences, with respect to a fixed ranking of alternative social/economical states. Indeed, the SWF theory is originally inspired by Samuelson’s pioneering work on the foundations of mathematical economic analysis. It uses explicitly Gibbs’ thermodynamics of ensembles “at equilibrium” based on statistical mechanics as the physical paradigm for the mathematical theory of economic systems. In both theories, indeed, the differences and the relationships among individuals are systematically considered as irrelevant. On the contrary, in the mathematical theory of “Social Choice Functions” (SCFs) developed by A...

In a typical scattering process among elementary particles, observation is limited to the asymptotic regions, where ingoing particles and outgoing particles behave like free, non-interacting particles. The region of interaction is not accessible to our observations. These would be interfering with the phenomenon under study. The interaction region is thus an “opacity” region for us. Starting from such a remark, I then discuss the behavior of open systems and their interaction with the environment. The discussion is further extended to the brain functional activity and to the possibility to describe consciousness and mental activity as inseparably linked to neuronal activity.

Mechanical vibrations seem to affect the behaviour of different cell types and the functions of different organs. Pressure waves, including acoustic waves (sounds), could affect cytoskeletal molecules via coherent changes in their spatial organization and mechano-transduction signalling. We analyzed the sounds spectra and their fractal features. Cardiac muscle HL1 cells were exposed to different sounds, were stained for cytoskeletal markers (phalloidin, beta-actin, alpha-tubulin, alpha-actinin-1), and studied with multifractal analysis (using FracLac for ImageJ). A single cell was live-imaged and its dynamic contractility changes in response to each different sound were analysed (using Musclemotion for ImageJ). Different sound stimuli seem to influence the contractility and the spatial organization of HL1 cells, resulting in a different localization and fluorescence emission of cytoskeletal proteins. Since the cellular behaviour seems to correlate with the fractal structure of the s...

Stress appears to be the basis of many diseases, especially myocardial infarction. Events are not objectively “stressful” but what is central is how the individual structures the experience he is facing: the thoughts he produces about an event put him under stress. This cognitive process could be revealed by language (words and structure). We followed 90 patients with ischemic heart disease and 30 healthy volunteers, after having taught them the Relaxation Response (RR) as part of a 4-day Rational–Emotional–Education intervention. We analyzed with the Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count software the words that the subjects used across the study following the progression of blood galectin-3 (inflammation marker) and malondialdehyde (oxidative stress marker). During the follow-up, we confirmed an acute and chronic decrease in the markers of inflammation and oxidative stress already highlighted in our previous studies together with a significant change in the use of language by the subje...

In quantum field theory with spontaneous breakdown of symmetry, the invariance of the dynamics under continuous symmetry transformations manifests itself in observable ordered patterns with different symmetry properties. Such a dynamical rearrangement of symmetry describes, in well definite formal terms, metamorphosis processes. The coherence of the correlations generating order and self-similar fractal patterns plays a crucial role. The metamorphosis phenomenon is generated by the loss of infrared contributions in physical states and observables due to their localized nature. The dissipative dynamics and evolution, the arising of the arrow of time and entanglement are also discussed. The conclusions may be extended to biology and neuroscience and to some aspects of linguistics in the transition from syntax to semantics (generation of meanings).

We study the molecular dynamics underlying the formation and the evolution of hurricanes. The giant global structure of hurricanes cannot be solely the results of random molecular kinematics. We show that the non-stationary, topologically non-trivial hurricane behavior is the manifestation of the collective dynamics at the molecular level. This is described in terms of spontaneous breakdown of the rotational symmetry of the water molecule electrical dipoles. The long range molecular correlations generated as a consequence of the spontaneous breakdown of symmetry are responsible of the large scale collective motion resulting in the hurricane structure. The critical non-stationary dynamics is analyzed in terms of the non-stationary time dependent Ginzburg-Landau equation leading to the vortex equation. Phase transition, criticality, temperature dependence, energy exchanges and entropy are studied. Energy storage and dissipation processes in the coherent state dynamics are analyzed. Fi...

We present here a model of meridians in the formalism of the gauge theory paradigm of quantum field theory with spontaneous breakdown of symmetry. We discuss the origin and dynamic self-focusing propagation of the electromagnetic field in coherent states and the role it plays in our meridian modeling. Within this frame, we consider the formation of solitary waves on proteins and anatomical filamentary structures and discuss non-dissipative energy transport. Finally, we analyze the relation of meridians with anatomical filamentary structures, the reciprocal actions between meridians and biochemical activity and the key role played by free energy, internal energy and entropy.

Average evoked potential data recorded as impulse responses of brains to electric shocks show Bessel-like functional distributions which we analyze in terms of couples of damped/amplified oscillators. This reproduces results obtained in terms of ordinary differential equations (Freeman K-sets) and offers the possibility of a direct connection with the dissipative model of brain in the quantum gauge field theory paradigm. We study the control mechanism by fine tuning the model parameters and the brain property of discriminating between two similar behaviors or perceptions. We suggest that a similar control mechanism may be useful in security communication protocols. Finally, brain activity and mental activity is considered in the light of our results.

We discuss the role of water bridging the DNA-enzyme interaction by resorting to recent 1 results showing that London dispersion forces between delocalized electrons of base pairs of DNA 2 are responsible for the formation of dipole modes that can be recognized by Taq polymerase. 3 We describe the dynamical origin of the high efficiency and precise targeting of Taq activity in 4 PCR. The spatiotemporal distribution of interaction couplings, frequencies, amplitudes, and phase 5 modulations comprise a pattern of fields instantiating the electromagnetic image of DNA in its 6 water environment, which is what the polymerase enzyme actually recognizes at long range. The 7 experimental realization of PCR amplification, achieved through replacement of the DNA template 8 by the treatment of pure water with electromagnetic signals recorded from viral and bacterial DNA 9 solutions, is found consistent with the gauge theory paradigm of quantum fields.

A long history of research has pursued the use of embryonic factors isolated during cell differentiation processes for the express purpose of transforming cancer cells back to healthy phenotypes. Recent results have clarified that the substances present at different stages of cell differentiation-which we call stem cell differentiation stage factors (SCDSFs)-are proteins with low molecular weight and nucleic acids that regulate genomic expression. The present review summarizes how these substances, taken at different stages of cellular maturation, are able to retard proliferation of many human tumor cell lines and thereby reprogram cancer cells to healthy phenotypes. The model presented here is a quantum field theory (QFT) model in which SCDSFs are able to trigger symmetry breaking processes during cancer development. These symmetry breaking processes, which lie at the root of many phenomena in elementary particle physics and condensed matter physics, govern the phase transitions of...

The brain constructs within itself an understanding of its surround which constitutes its own world. This is described as its Double in the frame of the dissipative quantum model of brain, where the perception-action arc in the Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenology of perception finds its formal description. In the dialog with the Double, the continuous attempt to reach the equilibrium shows that the real goal pursued by the brain activity is the aesthetical experience, the most harmonious “to-be-in-the-world” reached through reciprocal actions, the aesthetical dimension characterized by the “pleasure” of the perception. Aesthetical pleasure unavoidably implies disclosure, to manifest “signs”, artistic communication. An interpersonal, collective level of consciousness then arises, a larger stage where the actors are mutually dependent. The coherent structure of the brain background state manifests itself in the auto-similarity properties of fractal structures. These are observed to occur also in a large number of natural phenomena and systems. The conception of Nature divided in separated domains is replaced by the vision of Nature unified by laws of form implied by the underlying quantum dynamics of the coherent vacuum, an integrated ecological vision.
