Advances in tablet computers and cell phone technology have greatly improved recently and such devices are now widely used. Language teachers have especially been interested in using these devices as a means of providing learning opportunities. Reading online content from eBooks or the Internet, listening to music and watching videos are all activities which support the learning of languages. There are, however, a number of problems that have arisen when using mobile learning in a language classroom. The smaller screen, for example, makes it difficult to read content and input text with the online keyboard. Technical problems such as difficulty connecting the Internet, hardware failures and software issues are all common problems. Moreover, distractions from students who do not stay focused on the assigned tasks are becoming a classroom management issue as well. Some of the advantages and disadvantages of using mobile devices in a language classroom at a university setting are discu...

The 10th Annual Pan-SIG Conference, held at Shinshu University, Matsumoto, Japan over the weekend of May 21st and 22nd, 2011 was a resounding success with teachers and researchers attending from across Japan and a number of other countries. We would especially like to thank Mark Brierley and the conference committee for their efforts, which resulted in a professional, but friendly, atmosphere at the site. The 2011 Pan-SIG Proceedings may be considered a window onto the conference for those who were unable to attend, or those who would like to revisit a particularly impressive presentation. Collected herein are 20 papers representing the excellent scholarship in evidence at this year’s Pan-SIG Conference. We hope you find the papers in this volume as interesting as we have. We are looking forward to working with submissions from presenters at the upcoming 11th Annual Pan-SIG Conference to be held at Hiroshima University on June 16-17, 2012.

This work presents a method that was developed for extracting examples that include modal auxiliaries in two consecutive sentences from an English corpus. The method uses a process where the sentences are extracted, parsed for simplification of complex sentences, analyzed for frequency of use and then made available for display to provide useful examples for the purpose of learning the

Technology and language teaching & learning have been the subject of much discussion and re- search in the past forty years as the advent of computers brought new technology to a wide range of language learners. The development of CALL programs has steadily improved with the exponential in- crease in power and speed of computing to the point where currently multimedia applications, speech recognition, and the integration of artificial intelligence with machine learning has certainly made a remarkable impact on language education. To this end, JALTCALL2019 highlighted the cutting edge of language learning technology through a wide variety of presentations and workshops about current research into the theory and practice of AI and machine learning in language education. This volume of collected papers provides a good sample of the research and practice pertaining to the conference theme. Fourteen papers were chosen to be included in this work and they feature wide-ranging topics such as digital storytelling, video-based self-reflection, factors affecting Quizlet, content language in- tegrated learning, WordPress in teacher education, smartphone addiction, online courses, Facebook groups, learner abstracts and corpus linguistics, useful materials for listening practice, Instagram and education, a microblog corpus using Tumblr, speaking with your computer, and syllabic typing for language learning.
The papers contained herein have been double-blind peer reviewed and chosen for publication according to their quality, suitability and academic relevance to CALL research. The editors worked with the authors to improve their manuscripts for publication in this volume of collected papers. The Editors-in-Chief hope that the readers of this volume will find these papers insightful, useful, and practical for language teachers in Japan and around the world.
We would like to thank the authors who worked diligently to provide well-researched studies and practically-focused papers with the common theme of CALL. Additionally, this book would not be possible without the dedication of our volunteer associate editing staff. We are greatly appreciative of their efforts in working with the authors to hone their manuscripts.
