Music therapy has been recognised as a profession by the European Parliament. This has assisted the next steps towards recognition in relevant countries and regions. The author’s experience as an academic leader in music therapy training over more than two decades is used to reflect on the profession of music therapy within Europe through interrogation of concepts underpinning professional identity, training, and professional practice. Potential tensions between recognition and regulation of healthcare professions are presented and discussed. As all practice takes place in context, balancing training needs between techniques and skills, systemic national and regional policy, and institutional knowledge is crucial. Achieving this balance is not easy but is key to successful growth of practitioner knowledge; seeding student’s curiosity about context and systems from the dawn of training.

This paper reflects the experiences of a group of researchers from the Music & Health Research Group , Sue, Triona, and Jason who are undertaking PhD research studies supervised by Jane that are oriented around service user1 experiences. An overview of the inclusion of service user perspectives is presented with reference to the deeper reflection on a client centred approach to research developing in health and social care research that is evident in recent music therapy research. Descriptions of service user inclusion within the three projects is provided. As can be seen from each project description, each researcher uses a theoretical base to frame and shape the research study.

ABSTRACT All research that investigates therapeutic practice should be conducted with the aim to develop and support good procedures of inquiry. An anti-oppressive practice approach within health research provides a way to systematically examine research procedures and motivations to increase the potential that the resultant research will yield ethical and just results. In this paper two music therapy researchers consider how anti-oppressive practices can address real life problems and be applicable to real life situations; from questions of participation, to developing the research question, recruitment, consent, and further steps of the research process. The goal of this paper is to examine issues arising when considering anti-oppressive practices and healthcare research practices from the perspective of the authors’ experience of music therapy research.

Epistemology is a term used explicitly in social science research to refer to theory of knowledge, or ways of knowing. Describing the epistemological stance underpinning research studies in music therapy that use social science methods such as grounded theory, phenomenology, and ethnography will increase understanding of the outcomes presented. To promote an understanding of epistemology and its applications for music therapy research. The researcher describes her own views and experiences in developing knowledge of epistemology with reference to the social sciences and music therapy research literature published in English. She first focuses on terminology, then presents a discussion of epistemology. Further clarification is needed to improve understanding of the role of epistemology in advancing understanding of the foundations of the methods from the social sciences used in research in music therapy. In order to improve some aspects of research studies the following recommendations are made to authors. At minimum, a research report should, (a) define and describe the specific methodology such as grounded theory, phenomenology, ethnography, or other, (b) present the epistemological foundations of the method chosen, (c) include a statement on the personal standpoint of the researcher including motivations to undertake the study, (d) include the process of data analysis with justification from the epistemological stance as to why the process is credible, (e) provide outcomes of the analysis of the research in detail and in summary, and (f) refer to processes of reflexivity.

Abstract Choosing to listen to self-identified sad music after experiencing negative psychological circumstances seems paradoxical given the commonly-held view that people are motivated to seek a positive affective state when distressed. We examined the motivations people described to listen to music they identified as sad, particularly when experiencing negative circumstances, and the self-reported effects of this activity.

Abstract The findings from recent research studies in many countries show that hospital noise continues to severely interfere with patients' ability to sleep, their quality of communication, and their experience of stress. Some studies have also identified the impact of these noise levels on workers, with one study indicating that as many as 30% of healthcare respondents complained of noise levels in relation to workplace stress.

Feminist theorising as a perspective to practice within music therapy has received limited attention to date. In order to examine the opportunities that feminist theory offers music therapy, this paper provides (1) the historical context for contemporary feminism,(2) current applications of feminist theory documented in recent music therapy literature, and (3) a review of gender ratios based on data in the public record.

SUMMARY Qualified music therapists can offer an important professional service within health care teams responding to the medical and psychosocial needs of people of all ages who are receiving care in a hospital. Music therapy interventions can address needs for relaxation, social interaction, reduction of anxiety, and creative self-expression. Music is a flexible and creative medium that lends itself gently and non-intrusively to the care and support of patients from many backgrounds and circumstances.

Abstract Playing live music with people who are ill to promote optimal states of health and well being is a contemporary practice which has origins as far back as the written historical record. This paper examines a select range of literature from the academic spheres of medicine, music and music education published in the late 19th century through to the mid 20th century in order to interrogate and explore aspects of the history of music therapy and its development in the English speaking world.

In this paper consideration is given to aspects of social and professional music use premised from a “music as health” perspective. This critical exploration is intended to reveal values about music participation and music listening, with consideration of the way music is constructed as a contributor to social gains within music as health application. The frequently encountered expectation that music participation and music listening are innately good and “helpful” is examined.

For those who have made attempts and for those yet to make attempts to apply for research monies, this chapter seeks to clarify and demystify some procedures in the writing and submission of research grant applications. The application procedure for grants available for project funding or funding new services are undertaken somewhat differently from research grant monies, and the reader is directed elsewhere for support and advice for these other types of grants.

The promotion of attachment behaviours between parents and infants through music-based interventions is an emerging specialism in music therapy practice. The theoretical formations and research to support this work are increasingly being elaborated, and the work of music therapists with clients throughout the lifespan increasingly draws on this rich theoretical base.

Abstract This essay seeks to consider some of the issues around evidence that provide an ongoing challenge to the profession of music therapy to be vigilant and critical with regards the undertaking, but also the appropriation or application, of research in our allied health discipline. It is written in response to the statement that “medical music therapists need to continue to discuss and debate our views as to what constitutes knowledge, expertise and 'evidence'in our profession.”(Edwards, 2002, p. 33).

Poetry, drama, music, dance, and visual art are increasingly used in healthcare research to learn about the experiences of healthcare workers and recipients, to gain access to marginalized voices, and to communicate research findings to a wide range of people. Despite this emerging inclination towards the recognition of the value of the arts for healthcare research, creative arts processes have had limited use in music therapy research to date. In this article, we reflect on the small body of existing music therapy literature about arts-based research and explore possible reasons for the current neglect of these methods. We provide examples from Alison's doctoral research that demonstrate the value of using arts-based research for developing a deeper understanding of the profession of music therapy. Our reflection on the current literature leads us to propose further uses for arts-based research practices, for developing rich and evocative findings, accessing the voices of people who receive music therapy services, and communicating music therapy research findings to a broader audience eager for this information.► Few MT researchers have described their work as “arts-based research” (ABR). ► This is remarkable as ABR practices are employed in other health care disciplines. ► ABR offers ways to develop rich, evocative findings and to understand complexities. ► MTs could use ABR to understand MT from multiple perspectives and to engage wider audiences.

Abstract Feminism and music therapy have been little considered in the development of a theoretical framework or approach to our professional practice. This is curious given the impact of feminist approaches on a wide variety of disciplines. This paper presents some of the issues that arise when considering feminist theory/feminist approaches to music therapy and outlines some of the considerations that will appear in a forthcoming book edited by Dr. Susan Hadley and published by Barcelona Publishers.
