The cellular and subcellular localization of endogenous nitric oxide (NO . ) in leaves from young and senescent pea (Pisum sativum) plants was studied. Confocal laser scanning microscopy analysis of pea leaf sections with the fluorescent probe 4,5-diaminofluorescein diacetate revealed that endogenous NO . was mainly present in vascular tissues (xylem and phloem).

Studies on spatiotemporal pattern of population abundance predict that close populations should exhibit a high level of synchrony, reflected in a parallel time variation of at least one demographic parameter. We tested this prediction for two threatened species of Procellariiformes sharing similar life history traits: the European Storm Petrel (Hydrobates pelagicus) and the Balearic Shearwater (Puffinus mauretanicus). Within each species, we compared adult survival, proportion of transients (breeders that do not settle), and average productivity at two neighboring colonies. Physical and environmental features (e.g., food availability) of the breeding sites were similar. However, while Balearic Shearwater colonies were free of predators, aerial predators occurred especially in one colony of the European Storm Petrel. Despite this difference, we found similar results for the two species. A high proportion of transient birds was detected in only one colony of each species, ranging between 0.00-0.38 and 0.10-0.63 for the petrels and shearwaters, respectively. This seems to be an emergent feature of spatially structured populations of seabirds, unrelated to colony size or predator pressure, that can have important demographic consequences for local population dynamics and their synchrony. Local survival of resident birds was different at each colony, an unexpected result, especially for predator-free colonies of Balearic Shearwater. Productivity varied between the two colonies of European Storm Petrels, but not between the two colonies of Balearic Shearwaters. We demonstrated that within each species, several demographic parameters were colony specific and sufficiently different to generate short-term asynchronous dynamics. Our findings suggest that, in spatially structured populations, local factors, such as predation or small-scale habitat features, or population factors, such as individual quality or age structure, can generate unexpected asynchrony between neighboring populations.

Several hypotheses about changes in adult survival of European storm-petrels Hydrobates pelagicus and predation by yellow-legged gulls Larus michahellis at Benidorm Island (western Mediterranean) during 1993-2003 were assessed. Two approaches were used: analysis of pellets containing remains of predated petrels from two caves, and multistate capture-recapture models using recaptures of breeders together with recoveries only from one of these caves. These models were used to estimate separately adult storm-petrel survival and a minimum probability of being killed by gulls. At least 11-14% of the storm-petrels killed had been ringed as breeders. Local adult survival varied greatly among years, from 0.701 (SE = 0.095) to extremely high values (0.951, SE = 0.031) for such a small species (0.833 on average for the whole period). Nevertheless, it was not possible to assess whether this variation was influenced by inter-annual differences in gull predation. The peak of predation occurred in June, when maximum numbers of prospecting petrels visit the colonies. Predation was much higher at the cave that received stronger illumination from Benidorm city. Minimum predation probabilities estimated from capture-recapture varied with time from 0.022 (SE = 0.011) to 0.040 (SE = 0.016), and increased significantly after the powering of light received from the city in 1997. In these years, predation by yellow-legged gulls accounted for a large percentage of mortality of storm-petrels at Benidorm Island (up to 33%). Both methodological approaches confirmed that predation was carried out by specialist gulls, and that neither the size of the gull colony nor its food availability influenced predation on petrels. Management might reduce predation rate by removing gulls that nest in the caves, since these individuals tend to kill most storm-petrels.

We study the expansion of bosonic Mott insulators in the presence of an optical lattice after switching off a confining potential. We use the Gutzwiller mean-field approximation and consider two different setups. In the first one, the expansion is restricted to one direction. We show that this leads to the emergence of two condensates with well-defined momenta, and argue that such a construct can be used to create atom lasers in optical lattices. In the second setup, we study Mott insulators that are allowed to expand in all directions in the lattice. In this case, a simple condensate is seen to develop within the mean-field approximation. However, its constituent bosons are found to populate many nonzero momentum modes. An analytic understanding of both phenomena in terms of the exact dispersion relation in the hard-core limit is presented.

Este ensayo constituye una revisión de los aspectos socio-culturales en la producción de viviendas de interés social en nuestro país, así como una primera aproximación metodológica para la posible materialización de la dimensión cultural del espacio habitable. Para la comprensión de este proceso se propone trabajar, desde una perspectiva hermenéutica, con la Dialógica de Bajtín y el enfoque metodológico de multidiseño, donde la búsqueda de la re-significación de la vivienda de interés social se procura a través de la mediación entre los profesionales y los habitantes, más que por la imposición de patrones, propiciando así la construcción de una matriz cultural propia a cada situación.
