Toy design evolves parallel to any change in play concept and daily life of a child. Today’s toys, depending on the toy’s close relation with its time and space, include current technological elements in different forms. This study is carried out to put forward a framework for designing technology included toys. Within this respect, the determined toys, which have an important place in today’s toy market, are examined through netnographic methods. Depending on the findings, the importance of play value and user interaction for the technology included toys are underlined. As in every object’s design, the toy design process is also found to be highly linked with its user, manufacturer, and time and place. Today’s toy designer is the one who will position the new era toy by respecting the play essence of the toy and satisfying both the expectation of adults and children in the contemporary world.

Environmental and anatomic factors determine the limits of an individual's participation in daily activities. Design decisions determine the inclusivity of the built environment. Within this respect, disability studies take place in the architecture curriculum. This study investigates the disability and design relation within the context of architectural education. It seeks to answer how the experiencing method affects the approach of architecture students to the disability concept. For this purpose, the experiences and activities of undergraduate students of the "Disability in Design" elective course in the Department of Architecture at Duzce University have been analysed and evaluated. Within the scope of the study, enrolled students were asked to form 3-5 membered groups, choose a disability type, and experience the campus according to the determined disability. Data sources of this study are video recordings, empathy maps, student groups' reports, and observation results. The students' work was analysed and discussed to identify the effects of experiencing on disability awareness. The participating students of this study showed that through experiencing, they could relate the designed environment to the physical, emotional, and social aspects of disability. This study reveals that the experiencing method can be a powerful tool to help students comprehend the influential role of design decisions in the participation of different user groups in daily life.

ABSTRACT In design, which is a consensus of human needs and object's form, both the needs and the form should be analysed to reach a better solution. While geometry can be used to analyse the form of the object, analysing human needs requires applying a more complex system. This system must include analysis of both physical and emotional needs of the human about the intended product. In this study, possible outcomes that can be achieved by applying cultural elements in the system are conveyed within the borders of practice process of a designer and researcher. Functionality of visual language as being reflection of the culture is questioned in terms of satisfying stylistic, functional and emotional needs. This study is a resultant of practice and research. For that reason, methods of practice based design research are applied. While evaluating contribution of cultural footprints on designed product, meaning of the cultural element for designer, practice process, function of the design, relation between user and the design, comparison of experiences of similar products are examined. In this study, further expectations on this study are pointing the positive aspects of application of cumulative culture and highlighting the importance of joining past and now as a design method.

This paper aims to discuss the effects of urban transformation on local people of Suadiye and Bostancı Districts in Kadıköy-İstanbul regarding people's life styles, habits, and relation with built environment. After the 17th August 1999 earthquake, the government has supported urban transformation for risky and dangerous buildings even in some cases for the whole of a district. As a result of this support, especially more profitable districts have undergone a rapid environmental change. Suadiye and Bostancı are the two examples of this situation. In this paper, general characteristics of urbanization and urban transformation and their relation with the socio-cultural sustainability in the Suadiye and Bostanci are analysed by design thinking methods. In order to understand the governmental aspects of urban transformation, at first urban transformation laws are expressed briefly. After the brief explanation, effects of urban transformation on local people are discussed. The discussion is supported by the observations, desktop research, self-experiences and literature review. The discussion is especially focused on the shift from the balcony to French windows because of implicit and explicit meanings of the balcony. Consequently, environmental stress depending on the urban transformation on local people of Suadiye and Bostancı is emphasized and concerns about the losing certain cultural values of the districts are shared.

In childhood period, which involves individual’s 0-18 years of life, child interacts with her/his surrounding artificial environment via the furniture.  This study is aimed at analysing the role of the furniture in environmental interaction process of 3-6  years’ child. Since the environmental interaction process of 3-6 years of child can be defined as a way of  exploration, furniture of this population serves as a medium of exploration. Determined population perceives the environment via five senses, links the objects and her/his self, adds meanings to objects and the environment, in other words explores the environment. In this study, while handling the interaction between furniture and kids,  combination of literature review and personal experiences are applied as the methods.. With the help of gathered data, prominent elements of kids’ furniture usage, kids’ ways of furniture usage, order of applying five senses . For the last, understanding the environmental exploration of kids and analysing the role of furniture in this exploration process  can create awareness on positive and negative effects of environmental elements and marks of this awareness can be seen on furniture designs.

Till now, selection and usage of the materials have been examined mostly by the engineering disciplines. By being part of engineering disciplines, materials have been classified according to their quantitive values and till the recent years, they have formed products according to their quantitive values. At the primitive era of the productive society, occured shortly after the Industrial Revolution, monotypical products had dominated the market and function based products were sufficient for that market. In the transition period from productive society to consumer society, markets have expanded and the number of the variety of the products ,which met the same function, have increased. So, there has occured an opportunity for the consumers to evaluate and choose between varieties of the products. This opportunity that consumer gained has come with new questions. According to the which criterias, besides form and function of the products, do consumers choose and evaluate? Can emotional impressions of the product (effects which are the interprations of the senses) on the user cause this choice? Interaction between the senses’ of the target user and the product on emotional communication period and consistency and harmony between the product’s meanings taken by different senses are the major requirements in the consumer society. Engineering based material science can not go beyond being a beginning point in the process of meeting these major requirements. To meet these major requirements, there sould be some professionals who are educated about human perceptions, senses and behaviours and who are, with the help of their education, capable of providing suitable solutions to target market’s subjective evaluation. This eduaction should involve qualitative values. Do the impressions have the equal number to the users? Do assigned meaning have connections with in-depth meanings formed by qualitative values of the products? Is it possible to categorize and generalize the assigned meanings in order to understand easily? This article argues the need of a different look to the material besides engineering , some published resources are used to support the arguement. In addition to that, it suggest to artists and designers to take the responsibilty of assigning meanings to the materials to reach the user’s perception. User’s perception is formed by emotions and in-depth senses. Being qualitative of these values, does not change the classifiablity of the every scientific datas.

As it was before, today, the notion “art and design” , which has been defined plenty of times, can not fit into the meaning which has been carried with its previous definitions and so it is searched for single and new definition of “art and design” notion. In that context, ongoing different art and design education methods becomes the questioned elements of the process. This paper, includes the analysis of current different art and design education methods and emphasizes the need for a connective definition instead of an inclusive one. “Art and design” is the total of all the actions which has been taken in the process of introducing product - in its broad sense- and thinking product, art product, design product- in its narrow sense- which begins with formation of the idea in mind. With regard to this total, which includes the search for practicing the fiction of this abstract idea that have not been linked to any reality yet, basis of the art and design education consists of transferring the possible methods and paths which can be used in the searching stage to other people. As the transmitter itself here is called as artist or designer, educational process becomes an art and design product, for that reason it carries indiviualistic and subjective marks. In that context, the effort of reaching a single true method by comparing existing educational methods is against to the nature of art and design which we called it as free, original and subjective.
