Understanding the key factors influencing the mode choice behaviour of commuters is essential for planners to develop an efficient transportation network. Traditionally, mode choice models use socio-demographic characteristics and modal attributes as explanatory variables. But there are also unobserved variables / latent variables which influence the mode choice behaviour of individuals. The present paper focuses on the factors influencing the mode choice behaviour of the commuters in the Vytilla-Infopark area in the state of Kerala, India, with the introduction of the Kochi Water Metro. A questionnaire survey was conducted based upon which factor analysis was done using Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA). By conducting EFA, indicator variables were analyzed to identify the latent variables which influence the attitude and behaviour of commuters. After CFA the significant latent variables that influence mode choice are comfort and convenience of...

Roughness, universally accepted as a measure of functional condition of a pavement constitutes the smoothness and frictional properties of the pavement surface which in turn is related to the safety, and the ease of the driving path. It is determined using the international roughness index (IRI), which is a measure for texture of the pavement surface, and also it depends on the amount of other functional distresses present on the road surface. The present study develops a relationship between the roughness and other surface distresses of PMGSY roads Roughness data is to collected using ARRB Roughometer III. Roughness data also has to be collected from a newly laid pavement stretch, and the value thus obtained is subtracted from the observed roughness values of the test stretches, to get the net effect of the distresses on the pavement condition. A regression equation is then developed with the IRI value and the visible distresses based on the data collected in the field. PCI value i...

Adaptive Signal Control Technology (ASCT) adjusts the timing plan of traffic signals based on prevailing traffic conditions and traffic needs. Since early 1970, ASCT had developed throughout Europe and later in United states. ASCT is not implemented much in India. The ability to improve traffic operation and control performance as well as to break barrier in limiting its implementations will be depended on the better understandability of the system. In this paper a comparison between various adaptive signal control technologies is discussed with a mention of indigenous solution to the adaptive signal. The recent works and developments in this area is also reviewed.
