Recollections on how the author could by correspondence and personal queries acquire contemporary western literary production, both professional and of general interest, for widening his perspectives by further reading at a time when political censorship backed by the reality of iron curtain would make it hardly available—if at all and by taking definite risks

The reminiscences of the author’s father, Gyula Varga, coach-builder at Pécs and reserve second lieutenant of the Hungarian Royal Air Force, of his short-distance reconnaissance mission ahead of the Hungarian ground forces reoccupying parts of the old Hungarian Southland in April 1941, when a forced landing placed him amidst triumphant local Hungarians, disorganised withdrawing Serbian troops, and Serbian gendarmery on duty for one and a half weeks, with the only chance to community survival of organising the fulfilment of local needs through guaranteeing full law and order, including the rotation of the locality-elected village juge who was to be changed from Hungarian to Serbian during his command at Roman/Orthodox Easter.

After further missions with one of them ending by crash and cushy wound, the author’s father, Gyula Varga, coach-builder at Pécs and then reserve first lieutenant of the Hungarian Royal Air Force, had been missioned to command, with solely technical competence of supply, the part of the Krivoy Rog German military airport serving his Hungarian short-distance reconnaissance squadron, which subsequently was heavily bombed with him also wounded. He then could leave military service to return to his factory and family. His front diary is reproduced and commented/complemented in the report.

As a guest professor at the Lund University Juridicum, by chance the author got acquainted with a high ranking military emigré of the Hungarian ground forces, who gave an account of his war memories to the author, and the latter committed it in writing subsequently. Unchecked, they span from responsibility to Újvidék/Novi Sad atrocity in January 1942, via later arrow-cross-leader Ferenc Szálasi’s character and the popular reaction to the news of the Red Army invading the country, to end-of-the-war Hungarian senior officerdom leaking sensitive information to the enemy for their hoped-for personal salvation.
