En su primera concepción, el presente trabajo es producto de mis estudios de postgrado en las uni... more En su primera concepción, el presente trabajo es producto de mis estudios de postgrado en las universidades de Notre Dame y Princeton, donde presenté como tesis doctoral en el año 2001 un extenso estudio y edición de Armas antárticas. Desde entonc:es, continué trabajando en la edición y anotaciones, y en nuevas hipótesis de lectura que permitieran situar mejor el poema en el mundo colonial e imperial. En este sentido, el presente libro es un texto nuevo; pero sin duda endeudado con mi trabajo previo, especialmente el realizado durante mis años doctorales en Princeton. Esta edición y estudio no habrían sido posibles sin el acceso a grandes bibliotecas y archivos, instituciones donde pude seguirle el rastro a las palabras de Miramontes y construir un contexto para las Armas antárticas. Deseo expresar mi sincero agradecimiento al personal de las bibliotecas universitarias de Notre Dame y Princeton, donde pude trabajar inicialmente gracias a becas de postgrado; y a la Biblioteca Nacional de Madrid, la de Santiago de Chile, la Biblioteca Pública de Castilla-La Mancha (Toledo), el Archivo de Indias en Sevilla y el Archivo General de la Nación (Perú), instituciones que visité financiado por la Universidad de Princeton. Los extensos poemas narrativos escritos en castellano que hoy conocemos como «poesía épica» fuero... more Los extensos poemas narrativos escritos en castellano que hoy conocemos como «poesía épica» fueron quizá las maquinarias textuales más sofisticadas y de más prestigio durante el Renacimiento y el Barroco, riquísimas expresiones del pensamiento artístico y político de las élites. De algún modo, considerando la extensión de los poemas épicos —que fácilmente excedían los diez mil versos— y el prestigio de las tradiciones implicadas en ellos, así como el tono elevado y la naturaleza de los temas que ocupaban sus estrofas —fundaciones, expansiones militares, celebraciones de héroes y santos—, no debe extrañarnos que sobre la épica recayera un ideal de trascendencia que sobrepasaba las expectativas puestas en otros géneros. El género épico permitía celebrar las continuidades de las tradiciones, asegurar jerarquías y confirmar genealogías. second and final volume of the Diary of outstanding news in Lima and News from Europe (Diario de ... more second and final volume of the Diary of outstanding news in Lima and News from Europe (Diario de noticias sobresalientes en Lima y Noticias de Europa), corresponding to the newssheets published in Lima between 1706 and 1711 by Joseph de Contreras y Alvarado. The first volume (published in 2017) covered the beginning of the newspaper from 1700 to to 1705. Both volumes make available to scholars and general readers a unique complete set of twelve years of information and narratives about Lima, the viceroyalty of Peru and Europe, locally produced as a response to a European crisis. This scholarly and annotated edition comprise a corpus of almost one-thousand pages in Spanish and constitute an exceptional new source for the history of South America and Transatlantic Iberia, and for our understanding of the early development of global journalism.
