Zusammenfassung Ausgehend von (populär-)kulturellen Darstellungen von Bibliotheken wird das Verhältnis von physischen Räumen und Artefakten und Digitalisaten und digitaler Nutzung betrachtet. Eine Möglichkeit der Verknüpfung von Nutzenden mit der Bibliothek ist die genaue digitale Nachahmung der physischen Bibliothekssituation, eine zweite richtet die digitale Nutzung radikal auf maschinelle Nutzung aus und emanzipiert sich vom menschlichen Nutzenden.

In order to keep remembering why it was judged so important to build a new Europe 'out of the crematoria of Auschwitz', the 'vital link' between Europe's past and Europe's present should, according to the British historian Tony Judt, be taught over and over again (cf. Judt 2005: 830 f.). Every generation of European historians should re-interpret the message of the Second World War and of the Holocaust anew. To be able to discuss, negotiate and teach Europe's past, the historical research needs to become truly trans-national and transcend national borders. Over the last few centuries Ireland has experienced an unparalleled outflow of its inhabitants, the majority of which left their homes in the hope of finding a better life abroad. The personal experiences of these emigrants are most vividly documented in the multitude of letters they sent home to their families and loved ones they left behind. Following a data-driven approach, the current study aims to explore a collection of these Irish emigrant letters with the help of computer-aided methods. The main focus of the project lies on the thematic investigation of these correspondences, which is carried out with the help of topic modelling. Topic modelling is a fully automated methodology capable of recognising patterns of word co-occurrences in large collections of text. Thus, these algorithms allow us to gain insights into the recurring themes found in large text corpora, which would not be possible to capture manually. Die sozial- und kulturwissenschaftliche Bewertung der Dinge, ihres epistemischen Status sowie ihres Stellenwerts im Rahmen sozialer Praktiken und damit für das Soziale insgesamt hat in den letzten drei Jahrzehnten eine bemerkenswerte Dynamik entfaltet und eine radikale theoretische Weiterentwicklung vollzogen. In der aktuellen theoretischen Debatte über die Dinge wird dabei insbesondere die Variabilität und Instabilität der sozialen Praxis sowie die 'Ambivalenz der Dinge' betont. Uncertainty affects all phases of the product life cycle of technical systems, from design and production to their usage, even beyond the phase boundaries. Its identification, analysis and representation are discussed in the previous chapter. Based on the gained knowledge, our specific approach on mastering uncertainty can be applied. These approaches follow common strategies that are described in the subsequent chapter, but require individual methods and technologies. In this chapter, first legal and technical aspects for mastering uncertainty are discussed. Then, techniques for product design of technical systems under uncertainty are presented. The propagation of uncertainty is analysed for particular examples of process chains. Finally, semi-active and active technical systems and their relation to uncertainty are discussed.

Methods and techniques used in the field of Digital Humanities (DH) offer new research perspectives for texts and their approach as well as their tools can be used for more than just academic research. They could create added value in respective teaching scenarios in school and university education. Those concepts concerned require an intensive reflection of the processes and the frameworks, to transfer them didactically appropriate into digital teaching scenarios. The integration of ways to approach text in a linguistic and literary lesson digitally does not only support the lesson's teaching aims, but also agrees with the official school curriculum. Therefore, the text approaches from the DH-field are interesting for teaching scenarios in schools as well as for teacher education.

Die Beiträge des vorliegenden Bandes sind das Ergebnis eines interdisziplinären Workshops, der zum Abschluss des Projekts unter dem Titel "Varianz und Vielfalt interdisziplinär: Wörter und Strukturen" im Dezember 2012 in Darmstadt stattfand. Dabei wurden Erkenntnisse und Erfahrungen aus der Untersuchung von "Wechselwirkungen zwischen linguistischen und bioinformatischen Verfahren, Methoden und Algorithmen für die Modellierung und Abbildung von Varianz in Sprache und Genomen" zusammengefasst. Ein Schwerpunkt lag hierbei auf elektronischen Wörterbüchern, ihrer Heterogenität, der in ihnen dokumentierten Varianz sowie auf den Werkzeugen und Methoden, die zu ihrer Erschließung und Analyse dienen. Newspapers create publicity, draw attention to topics, and try to gain thematic acceptance from the reader. To achieve this, they use linguistic strategies and select culturally and historically evolved encyclopedic knowledge sources. In our pilot study we explore the presentation of the events in the Middle East–North African region between December 2010 and November 2011 that were soon metaphorically framed as the Arab Spring. To this end, we use a text corpus consisting of 300 opinion pieces from five national German newspapers. To get access to the conceptual knowledge structure and the linguistic strategies, we combine text mining methods and cognitive linguistics. We focus on conceptual metaphors (Lakoff and Johnson, 1980) and their binary source–target structure, where the source domain reveals the underlying conceptual knowledge structures of the speaker. This research focus is justified by the omnipresence of political abstract nouns and by the consistency of metaphors—in particular, genitive metaphor constructions—within the corpus. We first annotate parts of our corpus for such metaphors. Then, additional genitive metaphors are automatically extracted using an adapted metaphor detection system. Finally, we use a clustering algorithm to group the metaphors by source domain. In the following manual cluster analysis, we show that conceptual metaphors are being used throughout the corpus in a systematic way to implicitly categorize and assess the Arab Spring.

How does mass media affect the way we think about controversial topics such as the “Arab Spring”? What persuasive role do metaphors play especially in opinion pieces? We analyze how the political events of the years 2010–2011 in the Middle East and North Africa Region (“Arab Spring”) are categorized and assessed using metaphorical constructions in newspaper opinion pieces. We show ways in which particularly the use of metaphors reveals how the media tried to achieve acceptance for the events based on our cultural models (Quinn and Holland, 1987), which are grounded on our western knowledge. To this end, we constructed a pipeline that automatically detects (and filters) metaphors appearing within certain grammatical constructions, before clustering them by presumed source and target domains (Conceptual Metaphor Theory, Lakoff and Johnson, 1980). The results give us insights into how the “Arab Spring” is metaphorically structured by semantic clusters in opinion pieces.
