The concept of "teacher sensitization" has not yet been the subject of consensus among the theoreticians specializing in this field. Already defined as a behavior, an attitude or an emotion, there does not seem to be any agreement on its manifestations, nor on the impact it has on students. Emerging from a long teaching tradition, this concept is nowadays shown in a complex socioeconomic and cultural framework, in which teachers face difficulties in their daily professional tasks trying to meet goals of an objective and balanced academic improvement, their own intellectual enrichment and that of their students. For the sake of a “sensitive” university, it is of utmost importance that teachers are able to seek the growth of their students, detached from the merely utilitarian vision that prevails in our society, where only that which produces measurable or practical results is what matters and is of interest. This is not and should not be the case. Knowing “how to do” cannot surpass the innate human interest of “knowing for the sake of knowing”.

The relationship between philosophy and mysticism would seem to be complicated and that it would have no place in academic discussions, especially in the 21 st century. This is undoubtedly a mistake, as there have been important philosophers who have explored and talked about the mysteries of mysticism. In this article it will be shown that, despite their differences, there are similarities between the mystical experience and modern philosophy, points of union and feedback, especially referring to the importance of Silence as an inherent element in the experience of the Sacred. Master Eckhart, philosopher and theologian of the late Middle Ages, and Martin Heidegger, an exponent of contemporary philosophy, will be the ones who make us see that philosophy has hints of mysticism, and the latter is not as far from the first as Modernity has wanted to assert axiomatically.

In several religions and philosophies, especially in those from the Eastern world, Silence has been a starting point of the dialogue with the Sacred, with the Transcendent, or with God, an essential element of the hierophanic experience. This article exposes that three spiritual beliefs rooted in the Eastern world: Judaism, Sufi Islam and Taoism, converge in the idea of Silence as a metalanguage where the Sacred arises. Despite the doctrinal divergence between these religions, Silence generates in its practitioners an overwhelming experience in the face of something that transcends them, disrupting the most intimate of their being and that is difficult for them to express in conventional language.
