The study was developed among students of Translating and Interpreting at the Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Spain). Directionality effect in deductive reasoning is a very well-known phenomenon that shows that the percentage of forward or backward inferences that participants make depends on the conditional form used. A new extension of the semantic hypothesis (Oberauer & Wilhelm, 2000) is presented to explain the directionality effect in double conditionals with different directionality. This hypothesis claims that the directional effect depends on which term plays the role of relatum. It also makes several novel claims which have been confirmed in three experiments: Experiments 1 and 2 showed there were more forward than backward inferences when the end-term that played the role of relatum was in the first premise, experiment 1:t(45) = 2.73,p< .01, experiment 2:t(38) = 12.06,p< .05, but there were more backward than forward inferences when the end-term that played the role of relatum was in the second premise, experiment 1: t(45) = 2.84,p< .01, experiment 2:t(38) = 2.21,p< .04. ABSTRACT Research methods in translatology are still far from being well established. Learning from the experience gained by psychological research over the years seems one of the most feasible ways to enrich such methodology. In this context, one of the most recent and productive procedural trends in Psychology implies implementing empirical studies via Internet. The advantages and restrictions of this medium when adapting and administering information gathering instruments are analysed. Certain factors which must be taken into consideration in order to compensate such disadvantages, according to the regulations of the main international professional bodies in the sector, will be described (ITC 2005).

This study consists of a correlational and regression analysis of certain factors involved in the practice of translator training, as perceived by translator trainees. More precisely, our aim is to examine the relationships between translator trainees' strategic competence (as the dependent variable), and autonomy support, amotivation and critical thinking (as the independent variables) in the translation classroom. Building upon recent advances in educational and social psychology, we have relied on Self-determination theory (Deci & Ryan, 2011) as an interpretative frame of reference. After revising the concept of translators' strategic competence, the main contributions in the field of translators' motivation are also reviewed and the notions of autonomy support and critical thinking are approached from the perspective of both psychology and translatology. Our findings seem to point to the fact that autonomy support and critical thinking can play a facilitating role in the development of strategic competence in undergraduate translator students, who may also benefit from both when they encounter new challenges in real professional settings. Finally, the implications for translator training are discussed.

Tolerance for ambiguity (TA) is a cognitive factor that influences the perception of uncertainty and that, when not sufficiently present, may adversely affect problem solving and decision making, both key processes in translation. This being so, it has even been stated that TA is a personality trait which must be taken into account as far as translator training and recruitment are concerned (Tirkkonen-Condit 2000). After reviewing the main research conducted so far on TA from the disciplines of psychology and translation, the results of an exploratory field study based on descriptive methodology and self-report measures are shown. The Multiple Stimulus Types Ambiguity Tolerance Scale (Arquero and McLain 2010) or MSTAT-II is the main psychometric instrument applied to all participants (n=107). On the one hand, a positive correlation was found between tolerance of ambiguity and individuals’ own assessment of their self-efficacy when searching the Internet for documentation. On the other hand, those subjects who thought that they did not meet the requirements for becoming professional translators in the future obtained low scores in TA, and a significant difference in TA was found between them and those who believed to meet such requirements. The results of this preliminary work suggest that TA is relevant to the study of the cognitive procsesses of translators and that psychometric instruments of proven reliability and validity can be useful for process-oriented translation research.

Self-efficacy is a construct which has been found to influence individuals’ performance and coping abilities, enhancing motivation and facilitating goal-setting, decision-making, academic achievement, and successful persistence in the face of difficulty (Bandura 1995). Although the related notions of self-awareness, self-confidence and self-concept have already been addressed in translatology (Hönig 1995; Kussmaul 1995; Kiraly 1995), no specific research has been conducted on the relationship between self-efficacy and translation. The purpose of this article is to introduce the concept of self-efficacy from a social and cognitive perspective, as well as to explore its possible implications for translatology. An exploratory correlational study, based on self-report measures, was performed using the Spanish version of the General Self-efficacy Scale (GSE) (Baessler and Schwarzer 1996). The results of this preliminary research suggest that self-efficacy is a construct of relevance for translation process-oriented research, related, in particular, to proficient source language reading comprehension, tolerance of ambiguity, and documentation abilities.

Translation psychology studies translators’ underlying emotional, cognitive, behavioural, and social factors at play in the translation process. This chapter tackles the ways in which translation psychology is contributing to the advancement of translation studies by extending its conceptual and methodological frameworks and offers a brief reflection on research priorities in this subfield of our discipline. First, we present the achievements from those areas serving as crucial means and tools for the development of research in translation psychology, i.e., cultural and cross-cultural psychology, evaluation and assessment, and research design and methods. Then, we revise advances in the study of individual differences—differential psychology, motivation and emotion, and psycholinguistic and cognitive processes. Moving on to applied factors, recent developments addressing organisational, educational, and social psychology are also described. Beyond any doubt, translation psychology has already achieved encouraging results, but there is still a long road ahead. Methodological obstacles, such as the need for bigger population samples, more triangulation of data, and the replication of studies for the greater generalisability of results, still often stand in the way. However, never before have we witnessed such resolute efforts to overcome these limitations.
