The primary goal of teaching English is to improve foreign language skills – reading, writing, listening and speaking. In order to understand messages, to receive comprehensible input, and to lower affective filter, the variety of audiovisual materials is used in English lessons for medical students and health care professionals. This study presents an investigation into the effects of intra-lingual subtitling and captioning during video-based activities in advanced learners of English at Jessenius Medical Faculty, Comenius University in Bratislava. Two groups of first-year students watched five specific medical videos with and without captioning. The sample consisted of twenty-eight students. After the second viewing of the video, students took vocabulary acquisition and content comprehension test based on the video. Results from t-test partially support the findings presented in the scientific literature. A few discrepancies emerged, probably because of a specific medical content of the videos. The questionnaire delivered useful data which revealed that the students consider captions as contributing to their confidence in understanding spoken English.

Medical language is the language used by medical experts in their professional communication and incorporates more than 2,500 years of a development influenced mostly by Greek and Latin medical traditions. Its specific features and characteristics are studied from various aspects. It is closely connected with the immense development of technology and science that brings new concepts to the language; medical vocabulary is an open and continually changing phenomenon and its units often acquire new meanings. Learning English medical language that has become a lingua franca during the last few decades creates certain obstacles for learners in the form of collocations, irregular forms, existence of synonyms, doublets, abbreviations, false friends, etc. To manage medical language at an appropriate level requires looking for the most convenient teaching and learning strategies. Good proficiency of English medical language opens new horizons to medical professionals and offers various optio...

English medical terminology developed from medieval Latin terminology, which had absorbed a developed Greek terminology. Only a few medical terms come from the oldest developmental period of English language (from Anglo-Saxon). During the Middle Ages, French became an excellent medium for introducing new medical terms developed from Greek/Latin elements. Nowadays English more and more uses its own language material for creation of new terms. (Ref. 9.)

The work was directed to emphasize the role of motivation in the process of term formation in medicine. The authors present a confrontational analysis of a sample of medical terms. The aim of analysis is to show motivation in term formation in six different languages, that is in English, German, Russian, Slovak, Spanish and Latin. It is emphasized that there is a broad influence of ancient Greek and Latin terms, the basic source of much of our medical terminology. As for the motivation, terms are divided into three groups: the terms with direct, indirect and neutral motivation. The groups show different portions of motivation in the formation of the terms. The result of the analysis is the discovery that in the six compared languages, there are applied the same motivation elements, which are expressed by means of the same language elements. (Ref. 22.)

Medical terminology is very wide and varied. Besides terms formed in regular ways of word-formation (derivation, compounding, abbreviation) there are many terms, such as Christmas disease, parkinsonism, Alzheimer disease, Achilles tendon, narcissism, Oedipus complex, Diogenes syndrome, Alice in Wonderland syndrome, Bornholm disease, Ebola fever, etc. that do not refer to any sign or symptom of the named disease. There are sometimes nice stories hidden in these anthroponyms, mythonyms or toponyms. Knowing some stories of the terms makes the teaching of medical terminology more interesting and fun.

As there is no standardized international hematological terminology, a wild multiplication of terms can be observed here. Both in Slovak and English hematological terminologies can be recognized several layers. The largest layer are terms formed from Greek and Latin language elements, then there are terms formed from elements of national languages, the thinnest layer are terms from English penetrating to Slovak. We will also look at the individual ways of word-formation of hematological terminology.
In this article we will try to find out if the prefixes anti-, contra-, counter-, de-, dys-, ex-, extra-, mal- can negate the words they combine with (Ref. 9). Full Text (Free, PDF) www.bmj.sk.

In our short contribution we will deal with the question what ESP is, with its basic division into different types. And then we will speak about fears of ELT teachers to teach ESP and we will finish with demands put on ESP teachers. Recent years have vitnessed a massive increase in language teaching in our country not only in schools but also in factories and workplaces. Private companies are investing their money in training their managers in English which has become the main medium of communication. Schools of all levels are required to provide a large scale of language education (from beginners to advanced students, from general language courses to specialized ones); options of more than two languages. Political development in our country is accompanied with economic and social changes in our society, too. The new situation calls for specialists who are not only prepared in their own field, but also competent in languages. Very often these specialists have good general language k...

Zakiaľ v minulosti sa nové medicínske termíny tvorili najmä morfologicky – deriváciou a kompozíciou z grécko-latinského slovotvorného materiálu, v súčasnosti prevláda syntaktický spôsob – vytváraním terminologických združených pomenovaní, ktoré následne prechádzajú do skratiek. Najväčší medicínsky pokrok dosahujú americké kliniky a laboratória. Ich poznatky sú aplikované do klinickej praxe, publikované v množstve odborných časopisov a šíria sa internetom do celého sveta. Anglické pomenovania nových chorôb, javov, príznakov, liečebných metód a postupov rýchlo prenikajú do národných terminológií vrátane slovenskej. Popri ustálených termínoch sa naši študenti zoznamujú aj s anglickými neologizmami, ktoré v slovenčine nemajú adekvátne ekvivalenty.

Human interest in negation dates back to thousands of years ago and concerns not only Linguistics, Logic, Psychology, and Mathematics. A lot of everyday words have negative meaning expressed by means of negative prefixes. Such type of negation is called word, or affixal negation. Affixal negation is a process of word-formation, by which a new word is built from a word stem, usually through the addition of an affix, either at the beginning (prefix) or end of the stem (suffix). Sometimes the same word can be negated by means of more than just one negative prefix. Such pairs of words become synonymous (Ref. 12). Full Text (Free, PDF) www.bmj.sk.

English, a global language, is the most popular communication tool which is used as a lingua franca. For nursing students it is necessary to have a very wide range of stimulating activities developing communicative competence and performance. This study presents an investigation into the effects of implementation of audiovisual material into the teaching and learning process as well as its impact on communication evaluation and testing in intermediate learners of English at Jessenius Faculty of Medicine in Martin, Comenius University in Bratislava, Slovakia (JFM CU). Two groups of twenty first-year students participated in the same teaching unit and fulfilled the same communicative tasks. Group one (G1), however, learned without the help of audiovisuals, whereas group two (G2) used audiovisual aids. After two weeks, students took a communicative language test in order to assess their linguistic and communicative competences. The results of the communicative test supported our hypothesis that audiovisual materials enhance English learning.

Oral communication skills are applied in everyday doctor-patient dialogue, communication between medical specialists as well as in formal presentation of a highly specialized theme at various professional meetings. PowerPoint presentations on various medical topics prepared and presented by students are a suitable method in achieving educational objectives set by education providers. The structure, content, and manner of presentations were evaluated by the teacher during presentations using an evaluation sheet, and students were then awarded grades. For many years it was believed by our teachers that students prefer to choose medical topics by themselves. During the last academic year an investigation was carried out to find out if this hypothesis was right. Two groups of fourteen first-year students were involved in the investigation. While students from the first group (G1) had a free choice of medical topics for their presentations, students from the second group (G2) could choose a topic from a list of preselected themes arising from their curriculum. At the end of the semester all participating students filled out questionnaires with scaling and open questions. The obtained data revealed that both presenters and audience students preferred topics related to the curriculum and achieved better grades in presentations.

Abstract: Our study is based on comparison of the terminological corpora of medicine in English and Latin. English medical terms (anatomical and clinical) are studied from confrontational and contrastive viewpoints. Terminological units are studied from descriptive, semantic and partially also from historical aspects.
Comparative analysis of two languages in the field of terminology has shown that language similarities and differences in English and Latin terminological corpora have an impact on the practice and theory of terminology. Results show not only morphological and semantic shifts, but also historical development in some terms of the studied corpus based on codified medical handbooks and dictionaries. The studied corpus contains approx. 7,000 terms used in classes of Latin medical terminology in medical students.
Contrastive linguistics can be useful for the teaching e.g. of English-Latin medical terminology. Medical terms derived from classical languages present another “foreign” language (specifically its vocabulary and grammar rules). In medical language, a high number of English medical terms are equivalents of Latin ones in terms of their semantic and partially also morphological aspects. English is a language historically and culturally linked with Latin. Emphasis of differences can serve to evoke interest in medical students.
Keywords: contrastive linguistics, English/Latin corpora, medical terminology
