The PSI x 1174 (PMG 690) preserves the end of a poem and the beginning of another; this study aims to propose an interpretation of the former. After a brief introduction to the papyrological, philological and linguistic features of the papyrus, a new lecture of line five is suggested, and an analysis of every single preserved term is proposed: it appears likely to identify the poem with the episode of the Iphigenia’s sacrifice in Aulis. As a matter of fact, if observed from an intertextual point of view, the words used seem to correspond to the expressions selected by other poets when describing this mythological scene. In conclusion, an organization of the bookroll is supposed, and possible relations with Corinna’s poetry are explored.

Athena's rejection of the αὐλός is an Athenian mythical episode connected to the specific local sensibility and willingness; other places' legends, indeed, promote Athena's role within the art of αὐλητική, especially in the regions where such a τέχνη was particularly cultivated. The presentation aims to explore some sources related to the perception and the description of Athena's patronage of αὐλητική in 5th century Boeotia.

It is common knowledge that personal names, in ancient Greece, often originated from elements of the milieu naturel (rivers, plants, animals…): suffice it to mention the dissemination of the name ‘Μέλισσα’, ‘bee’, widely attested in epigraphic sources (about twenty occurrences in Attica, little less in central Greece; the same amount appears disseminated in the Peloponnese, in the western regions and in Magna Graecia, as the Fraser-Matthews’ Lexicon of Greek Personal names shows). Another female ‘insect’ name is documented, that may seem surprising to our taste: ‘Μυῖα’ (‘Myia’, ‘Fly’) appears in ancient Greek literary texts (for the first time in Luc., Enc. Musc., 10-11, then in other authors such as Clemens Alexandrinus, Strom., 4, 19, 121, Porphiry, VP, 4, Iamblichus, VP, 36, 267, in the Suda lexicon, s.v. Μυῖα, μ 1361, 1362, 1363 and s.v. Κόριννα, κ 2087, 2088, 2089), both as a proper name and as a nickname. This study aims to explore the personalities, proposed by the textual tradition, carrying such a name or nickname (as the Boeotian female poet Corinna), through the investigation of their role and/or career; on the basis of this preliminary examination, the analysis of the occurrences of the fly in literature and of its behaviour seems to suggest an unexpected connotation of the name, that might reveal, among other characteristics, a slight musical attitude.

New trends in classics show an increasing interest in local cultures, as independent from the Athenocentric perspective (Beck 2020): in particular, ancient Boeotian ‘ethnogenesis’ (Kühr 2006, Larson 2007) received new attention, and local historiography has been recently enlightened as an original production (Tufano 2019). What seems to emerge is that the process of Boeotian identity construction lays on the intentional promotion of an epichoric culture.
This can be observed through the interest in mythical foundations, or in history of religious sites, showed by local authors. In the preserved literary tradition, the use of performativity of language can be identified as a useful instrument to build a common past or to give a peculiar interpretation to some events: etiology seems to be much employed. Hence, the many cases of mythological unica are explainable thanks to the local, inner perspective.
Collins focused on the specific politic intention in Corinna’s narratives, depicting her compositions not as ‘parochial’ (Page 1953) but as regional, in their non-Athenocentric point of view. Therefore, every version of a mythological episode carries its own motivation, related to a specific will. So it is when, in Corinna’s fragments, we read of ancient legendary kings (671 PMG), or of Oedipus as killing the Teumesian Fox (672 PMG).
The aim of the paper is an attempt to collocate Corinna’s production in her regional context, instead of, as usually, in the mere literary tradition, comparing some Boeotian local historiographers’ sources to some Corinna’s texts.

Abstract: the personal name ‘Μυῖα’ (‘Myia’, ‘Fly’) seems quite documented in ancient Greek literary texts, both as a proper name and as a nickname. This study aims to explore the personalities, proposed by the text tradition, carrying such a name, investigating their role and/or career; then the attribution of such a nickname to the Boeotian poet Corinna is examined, within the tradition of the names of the female poets. On the basis of this preliminary investigation, a hypothesis about the connotation of the name is proposed: after the analysis of occurrences of the insect in literature, the name might reveal a slight musical attitude. An appendix gives reason for other characteristic of the fly in ancient Greek texts, and also proposes some suggestions of the musical trait of the fly in modern poetry.

The poetry of Corinna, whose chronology is debated, is characterized by a distinctive narrative content, and reveals a local, inner point of view, devoted to a regional, 'ethnic' mythology. This means that a 'female' voice appears to be appointed to celebrate local heroes and episodes: Corinna's compositions are not confined to female audiences and themes. Her poetry also shares some interests with local historiographers, engaged in discussion about foundations, etiologies, identity of places: they focus significant places, as the Ogygian gates or the Teumesos promontory in the Theban area. Corinna's mythography pays attention to the eastern side of the region too: her poems preserve references to eastern towns, such as Aulis, Hyria, Tanagra; to eastern heroes, such as Euonymos and Orion; to eastern genealogies and religious activities, (marriages, sacrifices, consultation of oracles...).
The aim of the presentation is to compare Corinna's fragments concerning eastern Boiotia (including Boeotica incerti auctoris, with a few new readings and interpretations that may reveal an interest in traditions concerning Aulis) to local historiographers' sources and material finds, to investigate eastern mythology and ritual practices; this might even enlighten women's involvement in shaping local identity.

Mappare significa identificare dei luoghi, ossia associare la produzione poetica delle poetesse liriche a delle realtà concrete, storicamente esistite e abitate da comunità. Questa operazione prevede un costante dialogo con le fonti archeologiche, epigrafiche, documentarie e storiografiche. Scopo della mappatura è ricercare se, e dove, l'autorialità femminile, in ambito di composizioni poetiche liriche, possa aver avuto spazio d'azione di rilevanza pubblica, attraverso l'analisi delle occasioni performative e della localizzazione (e circolazione) delle saghe mitiche.

L’umanità da tempi remoti avverte l’impulso di spingersi verso l’alto: lo sguardo, costretto a cogliere un flusso ininterrotto di immagini, cerca una posizione di distacco per soddisfare la curiosità di scoprire il mondo. Cosa e quanto possiamo osservare giunti alla sommità? L’uomo si è interrogato, ha rappresentato la apoteosi fin dall’antichità: E vanno gli uomini a contemplare le cime dei monti […] (Aug. Conf. X, 8, 15). Esemplare per riflettere sul simbolismo dell’alto l’epistola sull’ascesa al monte Ventoso di Petrarca (Familiari IV, 1). Il poeta che ha messo in scena un rovesciamento radicale della percezione teologico-medievale introduce nella potenzialità visiva la dimensione della temporalità. Petrarca conquista una meta, forse con la volontà di emulare l’esperienza di grandi personaggi antichi, ma ancor più interessa l’orizzonte che dalla vetta descrive. Il lettore scopre territori che universalmente ci appartengono, si inoltra in un luogo mentale, in cui confluiscono biografia e memoria storica. Ecco dunque spalancarsi sotto di noi una geografia concreta, europea e uno spazio mitologico che è la nostra patria, una terra perduta in cui sono fiorite le lettere e le arti, custode della propria storia. Dall’alto si indaga dunque una duplice dimensione, verso l’interiorità e verso il passato, alla ricerca di una riqualificazione del presente.

L’articolo è dedicato all’interpretazione di alcuni passi del noto testo medievale di ambito ravennate intitolato “Liber pontificalis ecclesiae Ravennatis”, di Andrea Agnello (IX secolo), ritenuto da molti studiosi proto-storico della realtà cittadina. Si è cercato di fornire una lettura comparata tra fonte letteraria e scoperte archeologiche, in adesione con la recente metodologia archeologica sempre più coinvolta nella comprensione dei lineamenti costituenti del passaggio dall’antichità al Medioevo, sotto il profilo monumentale –urbanistico, di una città che è stata un centro vitale di scambi sociali, culturali ed economici nella tardo antichità: Ravenna. Il caso di studio che si è preso in esame ha riguardato quattro specifiche realtà architettoniche: la cinta muraria, il palazzo di Teoderico, le basiliche di S. Severo e Petriana.
Uno studioso di storia dell’arte come Carlo Bertelli ci ha ricordato tempo fa che si può cogliere molto di Ravenna per via indiretta di monumenti che hanno dato dignità e decoro alla città, cercando di indagare in statue e rilievi, ma anche nelle citazioni letterarie, tratte dai testi e da pavimenti e pareti musive.
Agnello nel IX secolo si è posto tra gli altri anche questo obiettivo e gli archeologi oggi, con progetti supportati culturalmente ed economicamente, stanno cercando di ricostruire gli scenari descritti, restituendo voce e sforzandosi di motivare le recenti scoperte anche attraverso l’analisi attenta delle antiche testimonianze. L’immagine che si presenta e anche questo breve saggio si auspica di alimentare è quella di una città in fermento: in età romana e ancora tardo antica il suo porto, Classe, ha rappresentato uno dei poli più vitali dell’Adriatico anche in considerazione del ruolo di “sedes regia”. Oggi si evince il dinamismo di una realtà impegnata nel recupero e nella valorizzazione della propria memoria storica, modello culturale esemplare per la promozione storico-artistica dell’Adriatico e, con ambizione, dell’intera nostra penisola.

Analisi dell’epistolario riconducibile a Eugippio, monaco latino vissuto tra V e VI secolo e personaggio-chiave in una rete di rapporti culturali, religiosi e politici intessuti con la Chiesa africana (Fulgenzio, vescovo di Ruspe e Ferrando, diacono di Cartagine) e con l’eterogeneo contesto romano (aristocrazie locali, clero e intellettuali dall’Oriente).
Sullo sfondo di un dibattito sulla ricezione degli scritti di Agostino e di contrasto ai movimenti ereticali emergono spunti idonei anche alla comprensione delle necessità culturali del periodo e allo sviluppo delle prime istituzioni monastiche, come centri di conservazione e trasmissione di testi.

Il capitolo 44 della Vita sancti Severini, testo agiografico scritto nel 511 dall’abate latino di Lucullano, Eugippio, si conclude con la seguente espressione:  Linteaminibus igitur immutatis in loculo multo ante iam tempore praeparato funus includitur, carpento trahentibus equis inpositum mox euehitur, cunctis nobiscum provincialibus idem iter agentibus, qui oppidis super ripam Danuvii derelictis per diversas Italiae regiones varias suae peregrinationis sortiti sunt sedes (VS 44,7).
La “peregrinatio” che viene descritta può essere analizzata almeno secondo tre diverse prospettive: 1) come metafora di una trasformazione storica e antropologica di una frontiera imperiale, 2) come esito di una necessità di ordine socio-economico e 3) come richiamo al topos religioso dell’esodo biblico, che costituisce uno dei maggiori temi trattato nell’opera di Eugippio, ma anche una delle principali tematiche sviluppate nella tradizione letteraria cristiana, da sant’Agostino ai suoi successori.
L’Italia è stato lo scenario protagonista della migrazione dei monaci che hanno accompagnato le spoglie di san Severino, dal Norico attraverso diversas Italiae regiones: nella mia relazione cercherò di presentare una ricostruzione dell’iter effettivamente percorso. Per conseguire l’obiettivo, oltre ad avvalermi di quanto descritto nella Vita Severini, farò opportuni richiami  alla documentazione riguardante gli antichi itinerari stradali, agli elementi iconografici e architettonici disposti lungo il supposto itinerario e alle possibili tracce rintracciabili nella toponomastica.
Cercherò di ripercorrere l’iter attraverso la penisola italiana alla ricerca di denominazioni attribuite a Severino dalla fede popolare, nel tentativo di ricostruzione di un percorso che esplicita in modo efficace il  connubio tra Storia e Geografia.

Along the Upper Danube, into the ancient province of Noricum (nowadays Austria), Severin, a monk, who
arrived in this area in 452 for a religious mission, decided to establish an economic and political agreement
with the Germanic population called Rugians, who settled on the upper side of the Danube in front of an
ancient town known as Favianae (nowadays Mautern am der Donau). Eugippius, who wrote the life of
Saint Severin in 511, used items like rex, regnum frequently, only writing about the Rugians. Different
elements from material culture allow understanding the influence of the Rugians’ presence on Roman
society during the period of Severin’s preaching

This contribution examines the connections between Byzantium and the
Arabs found in the lexicon of an anonymous hagiographic work, which is titled Vita Michaelis Syncelli (BHG 1296) and was written in the second half of the IXth C. Primary focus is placed on the use and different meanings of the word “Hagar” in the aforesaid source and others, earlier and later ones. This paper examines two versions existing in the Byzantine tradition: “Hagar and Saracens”. A similar analysis is devoted to the word “fatherland”. Then there is a shift from the linguistic level to the historic and literary context which testifies a kind of interchange between the Palestinian monastic society and Arabs before Harun al-Rashid’s death (809). In the end, looking back to religious and hagiographic works perhaps appears the real glance of imperial power concerning the whole question: the religious conflicts among Christians regarding the right dogma were a possible mean for adopting a protective policy against Arabs.
